This is the first time Mammoth WVH were playing as a headlining act, which allowed them all the time they needed to play almost all of the great songs found on their 2 albums. While Wolfgang performs all instruments and vocals on the recordings, his talented band has been playing live with him for 3 years, and they have developed into a very tight and entertaining group.

The night was a sort of homecoming for drummer Garrett Whitlock, who had played alongside Wolfie in Orlando legend Mark Tremonti’s solo band. Bassist Ronnie Ficarro and guitarists Frank Sidoris and Jon Jourdan are dynamic stage performers, and all 3 are excellent vocalists. A Mammoth WVH show is a pleasure to witness, whether you are familiar with the songs or not.

This night was extra special, as a live music video was filmed during the performance of the next single “Right?”. If you were present, you just might catch yourself rocking along when the video is released.

The outdoor stage, just across the street from the boardwalk on the infamous Jersey Shore, was an incredible setting. Alter Bridge mixed up the setlist a bit compared to earlier this year. Mark Tremonti took lead vocals on the classic “Burn It Down”, just after delivering stellar harmony vocals on “Sin After Sin”, which is perhaps the strongest track from their latest epic album “Pawns & Kings”. Spoiler alert: full set list below.

Sevendust played one of the more unique shows of their career. Guitarist John Connolly was forced to miss the show for the first time in the history of the band, after getting exposed to Covid while training for the New York City marathon (as part of Mark Tremonti’s Take A Chance For Charity initiative), and put himself in isolation for a few days. Kudos to Clint Lowery for holding things down throughout yet another magical, emotional performance.

Finally, Scott Phillips, Brian Marshall, Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy emerged, as the sun set behind them, and a blood moon rose over the Atlantic Ocean. Alter Bridge has never played a bad show, but this night felt extra special. Perhaps it was the full moon, or the cool ocean breeze giving the northeast a break in the middle of a sweltering hot summer, or the awesome mood established by Sevendust and Mammoth WVH. Whatever it was, it even had Myles commenting that he was having so much fun vibing with the crowd, he was concerned that his guitar playing might get sloppy. That was clearly not going to happen, and his skills were evident during his acoustic performance of “Watch Over You” and his dramatic introduction to “Cry of Achilles”.

The band have released lyric videos for the title track Pawns & Kings”, the now fan-favorite “Sin After Sin” and album opener “This Is War”. These songs all found their way into the band’s set list during their European tour. Known for its signature dual-guitar attack backed by a driving rhythm section, the album’s debut single “Silver Tongue” shot up the charts around the globe and is currently still in the Top 25 in Canada. Its animated music video was created and directed by Ollie Jones of Better Feeling Films (Myles Kennedy, Prodigy, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets) and has garnered over 1.5 million views and counting. Pawns & Kings found its way on numerous 2022 year-end lists around the world, and was produced by longtime collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette.

Mammoth WVH had 45 minutes to showcase Wolfgang Van Halen’s incredible talents on vocals, guitar and keyboards. Their songs are tremendous and sound great in person. Wolfgang performed every note of his solo debut album, so he had to recruit a killer band to play the songs live. Garrett Whitlock, Frank Sidoris, Jon Jourdan and Ronnie Ficarro are already a tight unit, delivering songs with precision.

Still, the influential quartet—Myles Kennedy [vocals, guitar], Mark Tremonti [guitar, vocals], Brian Marshall [bass], and Scott Phillips [drums]—ascend to yet another level on 2022’s Pawns & Kings [Napalm Records]. It is the culmination of almost two decades together soaked in blood, sweat, tears, and the triumph earned through never giving up. It represents the bandmates’ dedication to one another and their collective devotion to a devout fanbase.

The 2022 Young Guns tour featuring Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH already has received advanced praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Loudwire, Consequence, Ultimate Classic Rock  and People and will be one not to miss as these two bands come together for this dual headlining package after big tours in 2021 (Dirty Honey opening for The Black Crowes and Mammoth WVH opening for Guns N’ Roses). Of course Mammoth WVH was just nominated for a Grammy for “Distance” and Dirty Honey just started off the year appearing on TNT for the intro to the NHL’s “Winter Classic” with a cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” – see the video here, shot on the frozen ice of Minnesota:

“It was a year in which Mammoth WVH and Dirty Honey emerged as leaders in bringing back a more straight forward and somewhat classic rock vibe to listeners.
– Loudwire in their Best Rock Songs of 2021 List
“Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH are two of the best new, real, emerging rock bands we have today. Touring together will prove that rock is far from dead, and will no doubt showcase its very bright future.”
— Eddie Trunk • TrunkNation Sirius XM Radio
The 31-date tour features bluesy rockers Dirty Honey and newly Grammy nominated rock act Mammoth WVH, both of whom have been making waves after strong 2021 tours, including Dirty Honey opening for The Black Crowes (most nights to standing ovations) and Mammoth WVH playing stadiums with Guns N’ Roses.

The Young Guns Tour is in support of both artist’s self-titled debut albums; Mammoth WVH and Dirty Honey, both released last year. Both bands saw their debut singles – Dirty Honey’s “When I’m Gone” and Mammoth WVH’s “Distance”  – occupy the #1 position on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. In addition, both bands’ debut albums made quite impressive bows; Mammoth WVH debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart, and Dirty Honey – the band, totally independent with no label affiliation – claimed the #2 position on that chart.

Sadly, Edward Van Halen, ground-breaking guitarist for the legendary California rock band Van Halen, has lost his long battle with cancer. He excited millions and inspired generations with his unique sounds and artistic style. Few artists have been able to create something so new and different, that it becomes instantly recognizable and endlessly imitated. Eddie played with flair and his solos are as famous as his painted guitars. He also spent a lot of time crafting riffs that became timeless classic songs. We love you Eddie, we miss you Eddie, and we thank you for the music which will live on forever. Here are our Five Fave Eddie Van Halen Guitar Riffs.

May 1, 2012 BOK Tulsa, OK.

#5 – Finish What Ya Started – OU812

On the second VH album with Sammy Hagar on the vocals, Eddie branched out in new musical directions. Finish What Ya Started is a chill and funky riff that simply grooves from start to finish. In the era marked by piano, keyboards, and power drills, this stands out as one of Eddie’s more memorable riffs.

Photograph owned and copyrighted by Vernon L. Gowdy III. 1986 Texxas Jam, Cotton Bowl, Dallas Texas.

#4 – Panama – 1984

On the final VH album with David Lee Roth in the classic era, ‘Jump’ may have gotten the headlines, and ‘Hot For Teacher’ may have been video of the year, but the tastiest guitar licks are in ‘Panama’. A classic good time party song with ambiguous lyrics, this is the capstone on the SoCal party era of Van Halen.

1986 Texxas Jam, Cotton Bowl, Dallas Texas.

#3 – Jamie’s Cryin’ – Van Halen I

The first Van Halen album is a landmark, chock full of incredible songs. One of catchiest riffs is the hook on ‘Jamie’s Cryin”, a hook so catchy it became part of a huge hip-hop single, ‘Wild Thing’ by Tone Loc.

Photograph owned and copyrighted by Vernon L. Gowdy III.
1978 Oklahoma City, OK.

#2 – Unchained – Fair Warning

‘Unchained’ features one of the most “Eddie Van Halenesque” riffs of them all. From the first note you heard on your transistor radio in 1981, you knew this was Van Halen. The mark of a true genius.

Photograph owned and copyrighted by Freddy Salazar.
Oct 3, 1981 Norman, OK.

#1 – Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love – Van Halen I

Of all the instant classics on Van Halen’s 1978 debut album, ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’ has to be the tune that inspired the most budding guitar players to pick up an electric and an amp and try their hardest to figure out exactly how he was doing that. Apologies to DLR purists, but they didn’t make official music videos in the 70’s, so here is the live Sammy version from 1986 Live Without A Net.

Photograph owned and copyrighted by Vernon L. Gowdy III.
1979 Civic Center, Oklahoma City, OK.

Honorable Mention – Everybody Wants Some!! – Women And Children First

While this song doesn’t technically have a famous “riff”, it does have an extended intro full of guitar licks and tricks. It essentially is a song that starts with a 90 second guitar solo, that just continues throughout the rest of the tune. Plus one of the greatest movie scenes of all time.
