Lost my tunes

When we lost the external hard drive, we lost all the mp3’s we had ripped over the past year – most of the CD’s are still at home, so it is rebuildable when we get back, and we have about 20 CD’s we burned in the van, so we are not at a total loss of music.

I am however, at a loss when it comes to listening to something when I am working on the computer. So, I joined the new Napster for a 2 week free trial. I can listen to everything they have, and download most of that, but if you try to burn a CD, it makes you pay for it, and you have to still be subscribing to do that, since other players only check their own sites to see if you have paid. I will probably just leave the files on here and just listen to them on the laptop.

So, when you lose all your tunes, and don’t have a 300-gig hard drive to store them on anymore, you can’t just download every single album you love. You have to have a plan. I settled on getting some newer ones I never had, to check them out. They are:
Springsteen – Devils & Dust – I never like his acoustic stuff as much as full band, but so far it sounds pretty good.
Green Day – American Idiot – this is a great album and I never really liked them before
Pato Banton – Collections – this is some great reggae from someone you probably have never heard of – he is a family favorite
Audioslave – Audioslave – this just plain rules
Bon Jovi – 100,000,000 Bon Jovi fans can’t be wrong – bunch of extra songs they never put out and some demos – 4 disc set, have not listened yet
A Perfect Circle – Emotive/Mer De Noms – dig their sound, have not listened yet
The Darkness – Permission to Land – curious to see how good it is
System of a Down – Toxicity – dig the singles, curious about the rest, new tune is great by the way
Three Days Grace – some good singles, hope the rest is good
Bunch of country songs – mostly pretty new – add some variety to the mix

So, the other ones I decided to get are my favorite kind of music. 80’s rock, hair metal, call it whatcha want – it’s all music to me. I picked my favorite 21 albums and downloaded them. Nappy did not have Motley Crue – Shout at the Devil. Here they are, with 3 best songs:

* Bon Jovi – Slippery When Wet – Wanted: Dead or Alive, You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin’ on a Prayer
* Cinderella – Long Cold Winter – Coming Home, Gypsy Road, Don’t Know What You’ve Got (til its gone)
* Damn Yankees – Damn Yankees – Coming of Age, Come Again, High Enough
* Def Leppard – Pyromania – Foolin’, Photograph, Rock of Ages
* Dokken – Under Lock and Key – In My Dreams, Unchain the Night, The Hunter (hearing this live in July 2000 clinched Hunter’s name for us)
* Extreme – Pornograffiti – Get the Funk Out, More Than Words, Hole Hearted
* Europe – The Final Countdown – The Final Countdown, Carrie, Rock the Night (the boys new favorite song)
* Kix – Blow My Fuse – Cold Blood, Don’t Close Your Eyes, Red Light Green Light TNT
* Lynch Mob – Wicked Sensation – Wicked Sensation, River of Love, Through These Eyes
* Quiet Riot – Metal Health – Bang Your Head, Cum On Feel The Noize, Slick Black Cadillac
* Ratt – Reach For The Sky – Way Cool Jr., I Want a Woman, What’s It Gonna Be
* Scorpions – Love At First Sting – Rock You Like A Hurricane, Coming Home, Still Loving You
* Skid Row – Skid Row – 18 & Life, I Remember You, Youth Gone Wild ** Napster does not have these 3 songs, only the rest of the album, so that required a change to:
* Skid Row – Slave to the Grind – Monkey Business, Wasted Time, (You can’t be king of the world when you’re) Slave to the Grind
* Steelheart – Steelheart – I’ll Never Let You Go, Everybody Loves Eileen, Love Ain’t Easy
* Tesla – The Great Radio Controversy – Love Song, Hang Tough, The Way It Is
* Twisted Sister – Stay Hungry – I Wanna Rock, We’re Not Gonna Take It, The Price
* Van Halen – 5150 – Dreams, Love Walks In, Why Can’t This Be Love
* White Lion – Pride – Wait, When The Children Cry, Lady of the Valley
* Whitesnake – Whitesnake – Here I Go Again, Still of the Night, Is This Love
* Winger – Winger – Seventeen, Headed For A Heartbreak, Madalaine
* Zebra – Zebra – Who’s Behind the Door?, Tell Me What You Want, Take Your Fingers From My Hair

The Blue Ridge Rock Festival tried to improve on the previous year’s festival, once again taking over the campgrounds near the Virginia International Raceway in rural Alton, Virginia on September 7, 2023.

Stitched Up Heart ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

On the plus side, they reduced the number of stages down to 4, and laid them out in a way that you could easily move between the side-by-side main stages and the two supporting stages. They seemed to have more accessible food and drink stations. Reports from the campgrounds were that facilities were improved.

The day started out great, with scorching sunlight and slamming sets from a variety of metalcore bands. We were able to catch sets on all 4 stages, including Stitched Up Heart, Vince Neil and Highly Suspect on the Zyn Main Stage; Kingdom Collapse, Stephen Pearcy and Coheed & Cambria on the Monster Energy Main Stage; Vended on the Famous Monsters Stage; and D.R.U.G.S. on the Smartpunk Records Stage.

Suddenly, just as Coheed & Cambria finished their first song, the PA was cut and the screens and big voice alerted the massive crowd that a storm was coming and we needed to evacuate. Campers were sent back to the campground. Everyone else was instructed to wait in line for the “dozens” of school buses which the festival had purchased to drive them back to their parking lot, which was 5 miles away down single-line, winding country roads, where they could wait out the storm in their vehicles, before later being shuttled back to the festival grounds to watch whichever bands remained on the schedule.

I don’t know the actual math, but the logistics of moving tens of thousands of people five miles away in “dozens” of school buses ahead of an impending storm simply did not add up. In fact, it took longer than 4 hours to shuttle everyone back to the remote parking lots, meaning that the majority of them were just standing in a cattle call lineup as the storm did hit the festival for about 15-20 minutes of high winds, driving rain and even hail. It seems unlikely that they would be able to return anyone from the parking lots back to their cars in time to see any more performances. Perhaps the only ones who would have been able to see any more shows were the ones who had already been standing in line for more than 3 hours, waiting on a bus.

BRRF Fans ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

The first evacuation message came at 7:01 PM. At 7:15 PM, the message was sent that “Shuttle busses are continually loading now.” and that fans waiting to be returned to their vehicles should “Please be patient.”. Around 8:00, after the storm had ended, there was a social media post explaining that the remote venue had no curfew and the festival organizers were working with the 4 headliners for each stage to be able to return fans to the venue and get those performances in. At 10:14 PM, the message was posted claiming that the festival grounds and equipment were “good to go” but that the artists were claiming equipment damage which made it impossible to play. This was a confusing explanation, as none of the headliners had their equipment on stage yet, since their set times were hours away.

September 7, 7:01 PM

The end result was a half day of music, and the passionate and dedicated fans of hard rock music were robbed of the chance to experience Evanescense, Rise Against, Cypress Hill, Five Finger Death Punch, Tech N9ne, Machine Head, Blessthefall, Staind and Three Days Grace. This left a bad taste in the mouths of many, but hope remained for a rocking 3 days to come.

SAINT ASONIA EMBARK ON VIRTUAL TOUR

BAND SHARES LYRIC VIDEO FOR “BLIND” — WATCH + LISTEN

#SAINTASONIAHAPPYHOUR HAPPENS EVERY FRIDAY

As a way to continue to perform live for their fans during the current quarantine conditions, Saint Asonia have announced  a “virtual tour” where the band will perform on the the different social media platforms of rock radio stations around the country. The band will add a local flavor to each performance.

Saint Asonia just dropped their new single “Blind.”

Listen to the song and watch the lyric video:

“It’s been really important to myself and the band to do everything we can to try and stay connected with fans, and with the people who play our music,” says singer Adam Gontier. “We wouldn’t be where we are without the amazing love and support rock radio has shown us over the years. We ended up having this really unique opportunity to play live acoustic shows for a number of stations throughout the month of May, and we’re really excited to do it. During this strange and somewhat disappointing period in time, it’s the least we can do. We’re stoked to do a virtual tour, and play some shows for all of the people who support us.”

He continues, “It also gives us a chance to introduce our new single ‘Blind’ to people. It’s a song about pushing through to the end, no matter how tough it gets. It’s a strong sentiment, considering what the world is going through.”

Saint Asonia continue to hold #SaintAsoniaHappyHour sessions every Friday night, which are all about the talk, the tunes, and the connection with fans.

Saint Asonia, featuring former Three Days Grace frontman Gontier and Staind guitarist/founding member Mike Mushok, released their sophomore effort Flawed Design in fall 2019 via Spinefarm Records. The single “The Hunted,” featuring Godsmack’s Sully Erna, was a Top 10 radio smash.

New York, NY, Friday, September 20, 2019 — Breakout rock band Bad Wolves reveal new track, “Sober,” from their forthcoming sophomore album, N.A.T.I.O.N, out on Friday, October 25th, via Eleven Seven Music. Pre-order the album HERE, and receive an immediate download of tracks “Sober,” “Killing Me Slowly” and “I’ll Be There.” WATCH/SHARE “Sober” audio/ video HERE.
The release of their third song, “Sober,” defines the direction of, not just the band as a whole, but vocalist Tommy Vext himself. The song’s powerful, driving percussions set the stage for Vext’s story of a ruinous relationship, steeped in addiction and self-desecration, that finds recovery possible for those who can stay the course. “The song is very personal to me about my recovery,” says Vext. “The message is very powerful to not give up on ourselves or the people who are trying – who are really, really trying to make and better themselves.” Bad Wolves came to Vext as an opportunity to try his craft again after his stint in Divine Heresy was brought down by his own demons and addictions, a childhood family life to the extent that most nightmares never reach, and an adult existence that took him even deeper into that hell.
Yet, it was a call from another addict, a kid looking for help, that brought Vext off the suicidal edge, literally, and into a life of continued sobriety and service. Vext declared in an August 2018 interview for Psychology Today, titled Tommy Vext and the Deafening Sound of Self-Termination: “Because when we are in that state of self-termination it’s so deafening–the only way to break out of it is to have contact with people who literally have it worse and are still hopeful. And that’s the most powerful thing about altruism. It’s the foundation of my recovery and it’s the fabric of everything I do. I think we’re all here for a reason, and we’re all here for a purpose. Some of us have to find our purpose, and sometimes it’s thrust upon us. . . Such is life.”
During the third annual Rock to Recovery Benefit Concert last year, Bad Wolves vocalist Tommy Vext was awarded the “Rock to Recovery Service Award,” for his outstanding influence and dedication in helping others fight their own battles dealing with drug addiction and alcoholism. Vext has been sober for over 10 years now. His blunt honesty about his battle and commitment to staying sober has continued to inspire many both in the music industry and beyond.
Bad Wolves have proven to be the unprecedented global breakthrough rock act of 2018 and aim to continue that momentum with N.A.T.I.O.N. The stunning 12-track follow-up to their debut album, Disobey, is a bit of a departure – staying in the same realm musically, but breaking beyond.
N.A.T.I.O.N. TRACKLIST:
2.  No Messiah
3.  Learn To Walk Again
5.  Better Off This Way
6.  Foe Or Friend
7.  Sober
8.  Back In The Days
9.  The Consumerist
10. Heaven So Heartless

The band just wrapped up their 22-date summer tour with Papa Roach and Asking Alexandria, and will be back on the road to support Five Finger Death Punch on their headlining U.S. arena tour, beginning Friday, November 1st, in Las Vegas, through its 28 dates, culminating on Sunday, December 15th, in Omaha, NE. Winter European tour dates with Five Finger Death Punch, with special guests Megadeth, begin on January 20th in Helsinki, Finland, through Thursday, February 20th in Budapest, Hungary. Tickets and VIP offers are available HERE. Full routing available below.
Bad Wolves consists of vocalist Tommy Vext (ex-Divine Heresy), drummer John Boecklin (ex-Devil Driver), guitarist Doc Coyle (Vagus Nerve, ex-God Forbid), guitarist Chris Cain (Bury Your Dead), and bassist Kyle Konkiel (ex-In This Moment). They released their debut album, Disobey (May 2018), via Eleven Seven Music. The album reached #22 on the Billboard Top 200, #2 on the Hard Rock Chart, #4 on Rock, and #8 on the Top Current Albums Chart. Their global breakout single, “Zombie,” is platinum in the U.S. and Sweden, double platinum in Canada, gold in Australia and IMPALA Diamond in Europe. The track has topped charts worldwide, including the U.S. iTunes overall and rock charts, Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart, Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart, while also reigning atop the Active Rock radio chart for three straight weeks. The album yielded the follow-up tracks “Hear Me Now,” featuring label-mate Diamante, and the soaring ballad “Remember When,” which both reached #1 at Active Rock Radio. The official music video for “Zombie,” a tribute to the late singer Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries and an homage to the original, has garnered over 255 million views across platforms. On June 19th, 2018, Bad Wolves presented a $250,000 check to Dolores O’Riordan’s four children, with a continued promise to donate all of their royalties from the song to them.

SAINT ASONIA’S “THE HUNTED” — STARRING YOU!
Rock band Saint Asonia are previewing their music video for their hit single “The Hunted” through a new Snapchat Lens that puts the viewer right into the video’s key scene.
In the :30 second excerpt of their forthcoming full length video for “The Hunted,” viewers can actually insert themselves into a clip from the upcoming video through a specially-designed Lens, and can then share their cameo role with their friends on Snapchat.
While the band unveiled the new Lens via their social media accounts, the Lens will also be featured in Lens Explorer, Snapchat’s hub to discover Lenses made by the community. To open Lens Explorer, just tap the smiley icon that appears when the Lens Carousel is active.
The Lens was made through Lens Studio, Snap’s free desktop app that makes it possible for anyone to create their own Lenses for Snapchat. Lens Studio just unveiled six new templates, including a Face In Video template, which places the viewer’s face into a video. Saint Asonia is the very first band to utilize this exciting new feature.
The Lens was designed by Blnk Digital and the video clip is an excerpt from the forthcoming full-length video directed by P.R. Brown.

Since being released two weeks ago, “The Hunted,” which features a guest vocal from Godsmack’s Sully Erna, has quickly gained radio support across the rock format. The song is the first single from Saint Asonia’s forthcoming album, “Flawed Design,” due out this fall on Spinefarm Records.
ABOUT SAINT ASONIA:
Saint Asonia – named Loudwire’s Best New Artist of 2015 –sparked into life four years ago when former Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier and Staind guitarist/founding member Mike Mushok decided to turn their joint ambition to make music that is “raw, real, and straight from our hearts” into a new band and a fully-fledged studio outing.
The result was their acclaimed self-titled debut, released in 2015, which charted Top 10 in Canada and entered the Billboard U.S. Rock Albums chart at #2. The album was driven by the Top 10 radio tracks “Better Place” and “Let Me Live My Life,” as well as the high-concept video to the featured track “Fairy Tale.”
Collectively responsible for 28 Top 10 U.S. Rock Radio hits, including 17 #1’s — the demand was immediately there for Saint Asonia to take to the road. Following an inaugural main stage appearance at Rock on the Range in 2015, the band set off on U.S. amphitheater tours with Breaking Benjamin and Disturbed and will follow the release of “Flawed Design” with an extensive tour schedule which will be announced shortly.

In 2011, Hats Off to the Bull landed at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 and delivered “Face to the Floor. La Gárgola crashed into the Top 5 at #3 and boasted “Take Out the Gunman.” 2016’s The North Corridor represented new heights for the group, marking its fourth Top 10 bow on the Billboard Top 200.

Last fall, CHEVELLE released 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities – a comprehensive compilation of sought-after B-Sides and rarities. The album contains music from 2002-2016, spanning their acclaimed career and remastered on one brand new collection for the very first time. The Chicago natives also recently teamed up with acclaimed hometown brewery Revolution Brewing for an exclusive craft beer collaboration. The beer, dubbed La Gargola, is a classic German-style Helles Lager and the band’s first brewer collaboration.

SAINT ASONIA RELEASE BRAND NEW SONG “THE HUNTED” FEATURING GODSMACK’S SULLY ERNA — LISTEN!
U.S./CANADIAN OUTFIT FOUNDED BY CURRENT + FORMER MEMBERS OF STAIND + THREE DAYS GRACE
SECOND STUDIO ALBUM + SPINEFARM DEBUT “FLAWED DESIGN” DUE OUT THIS FALL
SAINT ASONIA — featuring vocalist Adam Gontier, guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist Cale Gontier, and drummer Sal Giancarelli — have just dropped “The Hunted,” the first single from their forthcoming second album and Spinefarm Records debut “Flawed Design,” due out this fall.
Listen to “The Hunted,” featuring Godsmack’s Sully Erna HERE and HERE.
“‘The Hunted’ is a song about struggling to find your place in life,” Gontier said. “It’s a solid representation of the direction Saint Asonia is headed. I’m excited to share this with the world. And it’s an awesome bonus having Sully from Godsmack guesting on it.”
Mushok concurs, “I’m very excited for everyone to get a taste of what the new Saint Asonia album is going to sound like and I think that having ‘The Hunted’ as our first single is a great representation of where the band is going. It’s also a huge honor to have a longtime friend — Sully Erna, whose musicianship I’ve admired for years — be a guest on this song.”
Right from the start, Saint Asonia – named Loudwire’s Best New Artist of 2015 – have been fueled by a single vision: to put music and emotion first and to deliver recordings that aren’t overly produced or messed around with. It’s a vision that’s reflected in the very name of the band, which is derived, with a grin, from the desire to block out distraction and focus on the purely creative. “Asonia” is the term for “tone deafness” and it’s a vision that very much underpins the latest studio recordings.
Saint Asonia sparked into life four years ago when former Three Days Grace frontman Gontier and Staind guitarist/founding member Mike Mushok (also an important part of the Newsted setup in 2013) decided to turn their joint ambition to make music that is “raw, real, and straight from our hearts” into a new band and a fully-fledged studio outing.
Given the pedigree and profile of the musicians involved —they are collectively responsible for 28 Top 10 U.S. Rock Radio hits, including 17 #1s — the demand was immediately there for Saint Asonia to take to the road. Following an inaugural main stage appearance at Rock on the Range in 2015, the band set off on U.S. amphitheater tours with Breaking Benjamin and Disturbed.
In Europe, they guested on an arena run with Mötley Crüe, visiting the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, and Finland, as well as playing several dates in Russia and Eastern Europe. As a consequence, Gontier has been back to the region for extensive solo acoustic shows.
With Adam’s cousin Cale Gontier of Canadian band Art of Dying on bass and Staind’s Sal Giancarelli on drums, the latest Saint Asonia lineup is now primed for a comprehensive live campaign in support of the forthcoming sophomore release; this will include key festivals and headline shows, both at home and abroad. With a new deal in place and a new chapter primed to unfold, the four musicians are keen to place as much emphasis on the international arena as continuing to build their success story at home.
“This new album is a giant step forward for us in many ways,” says the frontman. “Of course, there’s those elements that have always been present in the music, like the heavy riffs and the vulnerability within the lyrics. But there’s also a completely new element that takes things to a different level. Our goal is to raise the bar on every record, so we’re incorporating a lot of different sounds and instruments on this one. For me, this is the best stuff I’ve written since 2005. I guess you’ll have to hear it to judge for yourself!”

2018 was one of the best years in recent memory when it comes to quality album releases from some of the biggest names in hard rock. The most common theme was struggling with the past couple of years, both internally and externally, while searching for a path to better days and a hopeful future.

Most people don’t listen to music on hard media these days, but if any of you happen to have any of these on vinyl, give it a spin and let us know how much better it sounds.

Here are our 33-1/3 favorite hard rock albums of 2018.

1. Shinedown – ATTENTION ATTENTION

Not only a great collection of individual songs that grow on you as time passes, but a concept album exploring the human condition and fragile state of mind.

Best song: GET UP

2. Tremonti – A Dying Machine

On Mark Tremonti’s 4th solo album, the band is at the top of their song writing game, and Mark’s vocals are his best yet.

Best song: Bringer Of War

3. Halestorm – Vicious

Halestorm continues to elevate, expanding their style and always delivering substance. Lzzy Hale’s voice reaches insane heights on this album, full of swagger and a wink of the eye.

Best song: Do Not Disturb

4. Bullet For My Valentine – Gravity

A biting tale of betrayal and redemption, with gnarly guitars and snarling sing along choruses.

Best song: Over It

5. Adelitas Way – Live Love Life

An exploration into sound and instrumentation, with a lot of heart. A band that keeps getting better with time.

Best song: Still Hungry

6. Atreyu – In Our Wake

This album just moves you physically and emotionally, a nonstop assault on your senses.

Best song: Anger Left Behind

7. Sevendust – All I See Is War

Some bands improve with age, and Sevendust is one that keeps writing better and better songs.

Best song: God Bites His Tongue

8. Godsmack – When Legends Rise

Godsmack returned with their best work since the first two albums. Killer lyrics and a few chances vocally and musically that really pay off.

Best song: Under Your Scars

9. Like A Storm – Catacombs

If you don’t know this New Zealand band of brothers, you are missing out. Creative sounds and meaningful lyrics.

Best song: Complicated (Stitches & Scars)

10. Judas Priest – Firepower

The Metal Gods put together their best album since Painkiller, almost 3 decades ago. Shreds upon shreds, and Rob Halford just killing it.

Best song: Rising From Ruins

11. Disturbed – Evolution

Disturbed extended themselves on Evolution, exploring new sounds while addressing the lost of loved ones to addiction and depression. While not quite the grand slam that Immortalized, it is still another home run from a band who is now 7 for 7.

Best song: A Reason To Fight

12. Pop Evil – Pop Evil

Pop Evil self titled this album, fittingly so as it sums up all of the best qualities of the band. Tight musicianship, inspiring vocals and meaningful lyrics.

Best song: Be Legendary

13. All That Remains – Victim Of The New Disease

The mysterious death of founding guitarist Oli Herbert shortly before the album’s release lends an otherworldly quality to this powerful performance. The songs are full of guitars and intense vocals.

Best song: Everything’s Wrong

14. P.O.D. – Circles

P.O.D. knocks it out of the park on this one, mixing old school hip hop into their Cali vibe rock and roll.

Best song: Soundboy Killa

15. Alice In Chains – Rainier Fog

The last ones standing are still setting the bar for the Seattle sound.

Best song: Never Fade

16. Ghost – Prequelle

Perhaps the first concept album based on the Plague and the Black Death which killed off half of Europe, Prequelle is spooky, spiritual and catchy.

Best song: Dance Macabre

17. Nonpoint – X

Nonpoint continues their unique phrasing and riffing on their 10th album, another stellar effort.

Best song: Fix This

18. Red Sun Rising – Thread

Red Sun Rising continues the hit-making momentum on their second effort, proving that they will be around for a long time.

Best song: Veins

19. Parkway Drive – Reverence

This is the heaviest album on the list, and probably tops most metal lists for the year. Very aggressive, but also full of hooks.

Best song: The Void

20. Ice Nine Kills – The Silver Scream

Each song is based off of a classic horror movie, a concept that could get corny but never does here, as the tunes stand on their own and the lyrical content touches on an aspect of the movie without becoming cliff notes.

Best song: A Grave Mistake

21. Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators – Living The Dream

One of the most complete albums that Slash has delivered in some time. The Conspirators are a tight band and this sounds most like a band album, rather than a solo act.

Best song: Mind Your Manners

22. Five Finger Death Punch – And Justice For None

5FDP has a formula and they are sticking with it. Fast songs, ballads, and interesting cover songs.

Best song: When The Seasons Change

23. Breaking Benjamin – Ember

The band who practically invented the rock radio sound does it again, showcasing their immense vocal talent and musicianship.

Best song: Torn In Two

24. Three Days Grace – Outsider

Three Days Grace finally comes into its own with this version of the band, ditching the self-loathing for an optimistic view on life.

Best song: The Mountain

25. The Alarm – Equals

Legendary rebels The Alarm returned with an outstanding record, still questioning the status quo and pushing for peace.

Best song: Peace Now

26. Dorothy – 28 Days In The Valley

Dorothy Martin has one of the best bluesy rock voices that you will ever hear. This trippy album could be the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Best song: Ain’t Our Time To Die

27. Jonathan Davis – Black Labyrinth

The leader of Korn has been quietly working on his solo album for years, and we finally got to experience the fruits of his labor. Very personal and very deep.

Best song: Basic Needs

28. Myles Kennedy – Year Of The Tiger

Somehow Myles Kennedy found time between Alter Bridge and Slash commitments to put out a solo album. This is all Myles, which means it is amazing.

Best song: The Great Beyond

29. Suicidal Tendencies – STill Cyco Punk After All These Years

A sort of new album, which is actually a re-recording of an old Mike Muir solo album. Doesn’t matter, it’s new to me and it is infectious.

Best song: Ain’t Gonna Get Me

30. Avatar – Avatar Country

Dilly Dilly! Avatar returned with an album exclusively about the King. Always heavy and always fun.

Best song: The King Wants You

31. Amaranthe – Helix

Amaranthe fears nothing, blending all kinds of music, with three vocalists getting into the mix.

Best song: Inferno

32. Skillet Side Dishes: Ledger – LEDGER, Fight The Fury – Still Breathing

The members of Skillet took a hiatus and produced 2 separate EP’s. Drummer/vocalist Jen Ledger put out a strong solo album, co-produced by guitarist Korey Kooper. Bassist/vocalist John Kooper got his metal on with guitarist Seth Morrison.

Best song: Not Dead Yet, My Demons

33. Greta Van Fleet – Anthem Of The Peaceful Army

Hot newcomers Greta Van Fleet, the family band with the Zeppelin sound, put out their first full album. While not as strong as their EP From The Fires, it still boasts some great tracks.

Best song: Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer)

33-1/3. Them Evils – Rollin’ Stoned and Livin’ Free (EP)

Them Evils is a throwback rock band on the rise. This EP showcases the promise of what is to come, real rock and roll shaking our asses.

Best song: Practice What You Preach

The Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California was full of Disturbed Ones on January 9, 2019, as Disturbed kicked off their Evolution Tour. Their massive stage protruded out into the middle of the arena, a multi-level angled structure that resembled an Imperial Star Destroyer, providing plenty of front of the rail spots. There was a massive curved screen behind the stage, basically the biggest TV you have ever seen. The show began with a lengthy introduction video, featuring video footage of the band through the years, narrated by vocalist David Draiman. The theme was deciding how to overcome your demons and darkness, using music as a weapon. Quotes were displayed over the images, such as:

WHEN MUSIC IS THE WEAPON, WE ARE ALL INDESTRUCTIBLE

WHEN MUSIC IS THE WEAPON, YOU MUST BELIEVE IN THE CAUSE

WHEN MUSIC IS THE WEAPON, THE SICKNESS IS THE CURE

WHEN MUSIC IS THE WEAPON, A WORLD ARMY UNITES

WHEN MUSIC IS THE WEAPON, EVERY FIST HAS A VOICE

WHEN MUSIC IS THE WEAPON, WE MUST EVOLVE

The band then emerged from the darkness, blasting into “Are You Ready”, the lead single off their latest album. This was followed seamlessly by “Prayer”. Draiman welcomed the excited crowd with his immortal greeting, “My brothers and sisters, my blood!” before launching into “The Vengeful One” which brought the first flashes of fire into the arena.

The video screen was used to great effect, adding visual texture to the light show, combining recorded clips and distorted footage of the actual performance. The energy was highest during this stretch, with much of the floor section turned into a swirling mosh pit as they played “The Animal”, “Immortalized”, “Stupify” and “Voices”, which opened with a Dan Donegan guitar solo that turned into an instrumental as bassist John Moyer and drummer Mike Wengren joined in.

Draiman apologized for not being his best self, as he is still getting over pneumonia. You would have never known that anything was wrong if he hadn’t mentioned it. His voice was outstanding throughout the night. He immediately proved that by adding an acapella intro to “Land of Confusion”. That was followed by a new acoustic song, “Hold On To Memories” accompanied by a touching video montage of photographs of the band members with their families and friends interspersed with live footage of some of their musician friends who have left us too soon, including Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Scott Weiland, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Draiman explained the song’s meaning by asking us to remember our lost loved ones – “Hold them in your heart. Hold them in your soul. They are always with you.”

With the crowd’s emotions running raw, John Moyer changed the mood with a funky bass solo, which lead into a Mike Wengren drum solo, which turned into the funky dance tune from the first album, “The Game”. After that emotional release, it was right back to heartfelt pleas to intervene, with a pre-recording asking fans to help those who are in crisis and fighting battles for their very lives. Hotline numbers were shown, along with a call to action:

IT’S UP TO US TO SHOW THEM THAT THEY AREN’T ALONE, THAT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF, THAT WE UNDERSTAND, AND THAT WE WILL FIGHT WITH THEM, AND FOR THEM. FOR THOSE YOU KNOW, WHO ARE WAGING THIS INTERNAL WAR, THE TIME TO BE A TRUE FRIEND AND ADVOCATE, AND TO INTERVENE, IS NOW. TO HESITATE, IS TO LOSE A CHANCE TO SAVE THEM YOU MAY NEVER GET AGAIN.

Disturbed then emerged on a second, hidden stage in the middle of the arena, to deliver the powerful new ballad “A Reason To Fight”. They then made their way back to the main stage, where a piano had been placed for a Dan Donegan piano solo intro to “The Sound of Silence”. They were joined by an acoustic guitarist, string players, and timpani drums for Mike Wengren. The song continued to build in drama, when the piano burst into flame which burned through the rest of the song! Draiman’s vocals were insanely powerful despite his illness and having already performed a full set.

They kicked things back into high gear with “Indestructible” and “Inside The Fire”, quite literally with fire bursts behind the drum kit and all around stage that lit up ropes hanging from rafters. After the song, the crew set out fire boxes for the still burning ropes to drop into and then extinguished them off stage, thus completing more than 90 minutes of passion and emotion.

They were not done yet. Draiman joked that “No sickness, no injury shall stop me from my scheduled duties of rocking you.” The crowd provided the special effects for the next song, shining their phone flashlights during each chorus of “The Light”. To top it all off, everyone was “Stricken” “Down With The Sickness”. As everyone already knew, WE ARE ALL DISTURBED!!
