Blue Ridge Rock Festival 2023 Day 2 Review

The Blue Ridge Rock Festival tried to recover from a confusing and frustrating Day 1, hoping to do a better job of transporting fans from the day parking lot 5 miles away, on a couple dozen school buses, to the campgrounds near the Virginia International Raceway in rural Alton, Virginia on September 8, 2023.

It was a very hot and humid day, and any rain and mud that had come the day before had dried up. On this day, the only focus was to move between stages, stay hydrated, and rock out. Ben Wells, guitarist for Black Stone Cherry, had a tribute to Jimmy Buffett painted on his amps – a fitting nod to an entertainer who helped create the festival friends vibe, which continues to bring people together, across all genres of music.

The day was owned by Motionless In White, returning for their 3rd year in a row, playing a night-time slot on the Monster Energy Main Stage. They played to the largest crowd ever witnessed at Blue Ridge Rock Festival (possibly so large as to violate their permit) and everyone shined their lights and sang along to “Another Life”, prompting Chris Motionless to take the time to share the band’s appreciation for the fans demanding that they return and perform at night on the main stage. It was a truly special performance from a band that continues to elevate.

The Monster Energy Main Stage had it all going on that Friday. Sudden star Oliver Anthony from Virginia kicked it off with a short set. Demun Jones, Crown The Empire and Trustcompany braved the heat early in the day. Next up was reunion time, with Coal Chamber and Flyleaf with Lacey Sturm delighting their long time fans with superb performances. Slipknot finished off the long day with a brutal performance that had exhausted festival goers re-energized and in constant motion.

The Zyn Main Stage had a wide variety of acts on Day 2. It went from the country rock sounds of Struggle Jennings and Black Stone Cherry to the hardcore strains from Of Mice & Men, Knocked Loose, Danzig and fan favorite Sleep Token, whose unique sound and stage show had them stand apart from everyone else performing that day.

The Famous Monsters stage was a constant swirl of activity, with mosh pits and crowd surfing throughout the day. The lineup was straight up heavy and aggressive. Angelmaker, Upon A Burning Body, Chelsea Grin, The Acacia Strain, After The Burial, The Black Dahlia Murder, Job For A Cowboy and Lorna Shore tore up that stage. It was so hard core, I got a concussion and head bruise leaving the photo pit, after walking into the video screen. Oh well, our scars remind us that the past is real.

The Smartpunk Records stage also had a diverse lineup. Standouts included Afterlife, Electric Callboy, VV, Testament and Polyphia.

One of the largest events to be held in Sacramento, California in two years, Aftershock returned to Discovery Park October 7-10 with a memorable four-day weekend for the first time in the event’s history, welcoming a record-setting attendance of 145,000 fans and retaining its title of the West Coast’s Biggest Rock Festival.

Aftershock has also announced dates for 2022, to be held the weekend of October 6-9, once again returning to Discovery Park. Passes are available now for just $10 down for a limited time at https://aftershock2022.frontgatetickets.com.

Producer Danny Wimmer Presents is pleased to report that almost 99% of festivalgoers this year arrived with proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID test – and others were able to receive convenient rapid testing onsite in order to access the event without delay.

Metal giants Metallica continued their partnership with DWP at Aftershock, delivering an incredible two unique sets over two nights including hits from the band’s 40-year catalogue on Friday, October 8 as well as playing Metallica (The Black Album) in full from back to front in honor of the record’s 30^th anniversary.

Other memorable moments at the 9^th edition of Aftershock included a headlining appearance from The Original Misfits on Saturday, October 9 who helped usher in the Halloween season with a rousing horror-punk performance as well as a Thursday closing set from Cypress Hill. Earlier that day, the festival offered a not-to-be-missed Bay Area thrash metal showdown with Testament, Exodus (reuniting with drummer Tom Hunting) and Death Angel providing an apt preview for fellow locals, Metallica. A recently reunited Mudvayne also appeared on Saturday, October 9.

Some sets also featured guest stars such as Tye Trujillo (son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo) appearing with his dad’s former band Suicidal Tendencies; Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath joining Pennywise to cover Minor Threat; and Dropkick Murphys on stage with Rancid.

Aftershock also honed in on rising talent including the first major festival appearance for Mammoth WVH, the project of Wolfgang Van Halen, son of the late Eddie Van Halen.

East Bay Express and Mercury News said Aftershock was “shaping up to be a tremendously successful festival,” adding, “While some festivals try to be everything to everybody, booking a diverse lineup that will hopefully appeal to the broadest amount of listeners, Aftershock goes the other direction and keeps a tight focus on all things heavy — mostly metal and hard rock, sprinkled with a bit of punk and hip-hop. In that sense, it’s a niche festival, but one that is also able to draw 30,000-plus fans per day. It’s become the place to be for headbangers over the years, annually offering up the best that these heavy music genres have to offer.”

As well, Sacramento Bee said, “The return of the Aftershock Festival following a 2020 hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the country’s most anticipated hard rock events this year. With a combined attendance of about 150,000 from the festival’s opening night on Thursday to a show closing set from Metallica on Sunday, Aftershock is also music to the ears of civic and tourism officials who are eager for a much needed economic boost.”

The event (sold out for the fifth consecutive year) is estimated to have brought in $30 million to the local economy with 75% of the attendees traveling to Aftershock from outside the region, according to Mike Testa, CEO of Visit Sacramento.

In addition to the 60 music acts over 4 days, with performances on three stages, festivalgoers were able to enjoy some of the best food and drinks that the Sacramento area has to offer, as well as various sponsor activations and experiences.

As well, all weekend long, festival fans were treated to exclusive interviews with bands playing Aftershock courtesy of the crew behind “That Space Zebra Show,” including Cypress Hill, Rise Against, Seether, Steel Panther, Body Count and dozens more. As well, Metal Ambassador and SiriusXM host Jose Mangin was a part of the weekend, introducing various acts ahead of their performances.

Danny Wimmer Presents will wrap up the 2021 festival season with Welcome To Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida November 11-14 with two unique sets over two nights from Metallica, as well as Slipknot and Disturbed in headlining performances, plus Rob Zombie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, A Day To Remember, The Offspring and many more. Marsha Zazula is a legend in the world of hard rock music, who lost her battle with cancer on Friday, January 10, 2021. Survived by her husband Jon and daughters Danielle, Rikki and Blaire, and five grandchildren, Marsha left an indelible mark on every life she touched.

Marsha’s influence in the Thrash Metal genre is far reaching. Under Marsha’s creative direction the genre was born and artists like Metallica, Anthrax, Testament and Overkill were given a platform in which to create their art which then influenced the entire metal community. Without Marsha being an initial patron and advisor to Metallica and Anthrax, the music the world now knows as Heavy Metal would not exist.

As co-founder of Megaforce Records, Marsha shattered the glass ceiling in the male-dominated world of Heavy Metal. Also running Crazed Management, Marsha and Jon discovered so many of the hard rock scene’s superstars. The label released classic albums from Metallica, Anthrax, Testament, Ministry, Ace Frehley, Disco Biscuits, Kings X and Raven.

Marsha was a galvanizing and calming force in the chaotic music scene and nurtured many careers – musicians and industry pros alike. Their success was her joy – and her joy was shared with all those she met.

Most telling of Marsha’s nature are the comments from her friends and family upon her passing. She will be greatly missed!

Legendary bay area thrash metal giants TESTAMENT are proud to announce their North American 2020 tour. The 30-date trek will kick-off in Phoenix on April 20 and will make stops in Austin, Mexico and Toronto before concluding in Anaheim on May 28. Joining them on the tour are The Black Dahlia Murder, label mates Municipal Waste and Meshiaak.

The annual DIMEBASH is an all-star jam honoring the life and legacy of “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, the late co-founder and guitarist of Pantera and Damageplan, and the unofficial kickoff party for the NAMM convention. Jose Mangin and Riki Rachtman co-hosted the event on January 16, 2020 at The Observatory OC in Santa Ana, California.

Over 5 incredible hours, artists from dozens of bands rotated on and off the stage, performing 40 songs, including Pantera classics and other legendary tunes. Sadly, this event now also honors the late Vinnie Paul, drummer of Pantera, Damageplan and Hellyeah, and Dimebag’s brother. Both men were more than stellar musicians, they were incredible human beings who brought light into so many lives. It is no surprise that their musical peers and friends show up in droves to honor their memory by playing their songs, and sharing their love for these two giants.

Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin kicked things off on lead vocals, performing the second song from all over the crowd, as fans surfed him from the front of the house all the way back to the stage. He also shared emotional speeches about the power of music and love and gratitude. Riki Rachtman also told stories from his days on MTV’s Headbangers Ball, where he was forced to call him “Diamond” Darrell instead of “Dimebag” due to outrageous censorship.

Ron Williams of RONZ WORLD Custom Painted Guitars delivered yet another amazing original piece, which was auctioned off, as the winner was chosen by Rita Haney, Dime’s longtime girlfriend and keeper of his legacy. Proceeds from the event will benefit music education and animal rescues.

After the show, VIP guests were able to join the artists backstage to enjoy Back Beat BBQ, which none other than Dave Grohl himself had been cooking since 8:00 that morning. This was the best pulled pork and ribs that I have ever eaten. Is there nothing this man cannot do? All in all, it was an emotional, empowering evening of entertainment and excess.

Jonathan Zazula, known the world over as Jonny Z, has lived an intense life. Jonny Z and Marsha Zazula in the Golden Era of Megaforce

Jonny Z says about deciding to release a book about his life, “I wanted to tell the story of my life before someone else did. This is a story that has a motto behind it – “nothing to it but to do it”. There were a lot of odds factoring in for Marsha and myself, and we did it. No matter what anyone says to Marsha and I, we did it, and I just wanted to get that story down – that it took two people. I wanted our love story in there. I was also never very forward and transparent about my manic depression and bi-polar condition, and I just wanted to tell the story of how a man can get through that, poverty, incarceration and humiliation and rise to succeed with everything against him.”

After experiencing the horrors of Wall Street, in order to put food on the table for his children, Jonny Z began selling records at a flea market store he dubbed Rock N’ Roll Heaven in 1981, which blossomed into a major record store in the United States and influenced the heavy metal movement as we know it today. Seminal Megaforce Records publicist and Adrenaline PR CEO Maria Ferrero was his first customer before the store was even open.

Zazula adds, “I sold metal records because metal is foreground music, not background music. It inspires you to listen and pay attention to it. The fans of heavy metal music all came into the store with their painted jackets and denim vests and patches, which was very reminiscent to me of the late 60s and early 70s music scene that I was such a part of.”

In the winter of 1982, Jonny Z received an unexpected demo tape from underground, unsigned band Metallica. Eager and determined to have the music heard by the entire world, Jonny and Marsha, founded Megaforce Records in 1983, and soon after, released Metallica‘s debut album, Kill ‘Em All. Through this release, Megaforce cemented its position as the de-facto music label in America for heavy metal – but that’s just the start. The bands they would go on to work with released some of the most prolific and important albums in heavy metal history, giving it its Golden Era.

Heavy Tales details the stories of how Jonny Z worked miracles by managing and releasing albums by Metallica, Anthrax, Testament, Mercyful Fate, Overkill, Exciter, Stormtroopers of Death, Method of Destruction, Ace Frehley, King’s X, Ministry, Mindfunk, Nudeswirl, Warren Haynes, Disco Biscuits and others, and how one night in 1984, he jokingly created rap metal before anyone else conceived the idea.

With a foreword written by Testament vocalist Chuck Billy, plus over 100 rare photographs unearthed from the MegaVault and photographer friends worldwide, Heavy Tales is the definitive American story of a family man with a dream, determined to prove to the world that heavy metal belonged on the stage, in your car, on the radio, inand in your living room.

The stories told in Heavy Tales were captured and compiled by Harold Claros-Maldonado, a lifelong fan of heavy metal who originally contacted the Zazulas to write a report on early Metallica. After several discussions, Zazula felt Claros-Maldonado would be the ideal partner to help him tell his story in a book.

Harold Claros-Maldonado says, “Jon Zazula is without question the Godfather of thrash metal. Having the opportunity to work together, I learned about the miracles he worked in order to release some of the most potent heavy metal albums of all time. Chamdin, an award-winning Swedish filmmaker who has previously helmed videos for the likes of Ghost and The Hellacopters, shot “Dance Dance Dance” last month in Stockholm and created something truly unique by combining two vastly different art forms – DANKO JONES’ signature style of fist-pumping rock with an incredible single-take dancehall-inspired clip.

As longtime fans of his work, the members of DANKO JONES were excited to collaborate with Chamdin and gave him free reign to bring his vision of their song to life. “Dance Dance Dance” – which premiered on Los Angeles’ KLOS-FM last month, when Jones guested on the popular “Jonesy’s Jukebox” program hosted by Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) – is the third track unveiled in advance of the release of the group’s new album, “A Rock Supreme,” which was produced by GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Biffy Clyro). “A Rock Supreme” is due out April 26 via M-Theory Audio (U.S.), Rise Above (UK), Indica (Canada, AU, NZ) and AFM (rest of the world).

While the group’s successful West Coast tour with Nashville Pussy and Prima Donna ends tonight, DANKO JONES will return to America later this year, when they will embark on the inaugural Megacruise with Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament and other legendary heavyweights. The band also has a number of high-profile European performances scheduled in the coming months, including a Helsinki date supporting The Offspring and appearances at Sweden Rock Festival and the Highfield Festival in Germany. The Hall of Heavy Metal History Announces Final Inductees List for 2019 Metal Hall of Fame Gala

To be Awarded at the Annual Metal Hall of Fame Gala, Taking Place January 23, 2019 @ Marriott Delta Garden Grove, Anaheim, CA

The annual Hall of Heavy Metal History‘s Metal Hall of Fame Gala will take place on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Marriott Delta Garden Grove in Anaheim, CA. The event will be hosted by iconic television, radio personality and heavy metal champion Eddie Trunk, and will feature appearances by heavy metal greats of today and years past. The Metal Hall of Fame Gala is quickly solidifying itself as the most important night in rock and metal!

The event will feature performances by legendary drummers and Hall of Heavy Metal History inductees Carmine Appice and Vinny Appice, as well as a performance by hard rock/punk icon Jean Beauvoir. Los Angeles heavy rock/metal group Budderside will open the show.

The event will also feature the premiere/free screening of Cleopatra Entertainment’s new film Band vs. Brand before the gala begins. Several celebrities from the film will be present at the screening.

Please note event times have changed: Doors open at 4:30 PM, and a red carpet will take place from 5:00-7:00 PM. The free screening of Band vs. Brand will take place from 7:00-8:00 PM, and the gala/induction ceremony will begin at 8:00 PM with Budderside‘s performance.
