Lost my tunes

When we lost the external hard drive, we lost all the mp3’s we had ripped over the past year – most of the CD’s are still at home, so it is rebuildable when we get back, and we have about 20 CD’s we burned in the van, so we are not at a total loss of music.

I am however, at a loss when it comes to listening to something when I am working on the computer. So, I joined the new Napster for a 2 week free trial. I can listen to everything they have, and download most of that, but if you try to burn a CD, it makes you pay for it, and you have to still be subscribing to do that, since other players only check their own sites to see if you have paid. I will probably just leave the files on here and just listen to them on the laptop.

So, when you lose all your tunes, and don’t have a 300-gig hard drive to store them on anymore, you can’t just download every single album you love. You have to have a plan. I settled on getting some newer ones I never had, to check them out. They are:
Springsteen – Devils & Dust – I never like his acoustic stuff as much as full band, but so far it sounds pretty good.
Green Day – American Idiot – this is a great album and I never really liked them before
Pato Banton – Collections – this is some great reggae from someone you probably have never heard of – he is a family favorite
Audioslave – Audioslave – this just plain rules
Bon Jovi – 100,000,000 Bon Jovi fans can’t be wrong – bunch of extra songs they never put out and some demos – 4 disc set, have not listened yet
A Perfect Circle – Emotive/Mer De Noms – dig their sound, have not listened yet
The Darkness – Permission to Land – curious to see how good it is
System of a Down – Toxicity – dig the singles, curious about the rest, new tune is great by the way
Three Days Grace – some good singles, hope the rest is good
Bunch of country songs – mostly pretty new – add some variety to the mix

So, the other ones I decided to get are my favorite kind of music. 80’s rock, hair metal, call it whatcha want – it’s all music to me. I picked my favorite 21 albums and downloaded them. Nappy did not have Motley Crue – Shout at the Devil. Here they are, with 3 best songs:

* Bon Jovi – Slippery When Wet – Wanted: Dead or Alive, You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin’ on a Prayer
* Cinderella – Long Cold Winter – Coming Home, Gypsy Road, Don’t Know What You’ve Got (til its gone)
* Damn Yankees – Damn Yankees – Coming of Age, Come Again, High Enough
* Def Leppard – Pyromania – Foolin’, Photograph, Rock of Ages
* Dokken – Under Lock and Key – In My Dreams, Unchain the Night, The Hunter (hearing this live in July 2000 clinched Hunter’s name for us)
* Extreme – Pornograffiti – Get the Funk Out, More Than Words, Hole Hearted
* Europe – The Final Countdown – The Final Countdown, Carrie, Rock the Night (the boys new favorite song)
* Kix – Blow My Fuse – Cold Blood, Don’t Close Your Eyes, Red Light Green Light TNT
* Lynch Mob – Wicked Sensation – Wicked Sensation, River of Love, Through These Eyes
* Quiet Riot – Metal Health – Bang Your Head, Cum On Feel The Noize, Slick Black Cadillac
* Ratt – Reach For The Sky – Way Cool Jr., I Want a Woman, What’s It Gonna Be
* Scorpions – Love At First Sting – Rock You Like A Hurricane, Coming Home, Still Loving You
* Skid Row – Skid Row – 18 & Life, I Remember You, Youth Gone Wild ** Napster does not have these 3 songs, only the rest of the album, so that required a change to:
* Skid Row – Slave to the Grind – Monkey Business, Wasted Time, (You can’t be king of the world when you’re) Slave to the Grind
* Steelheart – Steelheart – I’ll Never Let You Go, Everybody Loves Eileen, Love Ain’t Easy
* Tesla – The Great Radio Controversy – Love Song, Hang Tough, The Way It Is
* Twisted Sister – Stay Hungry – I Wanna Rock, We’re Not Gonna Take It, The Price
* Van Halen – 5150 – Dreams, Love Walks In, Why Can’t This Be Love
* White Lion – Pride – Wait, When The Children Cry, Lady of the Valley
* Whitesnake – Whitesnake – Here I Go Again, Still of the Night, Is This Love
* Winger – Winger – Seventeen, Headed For A Heartbreak, Madalaine
* Zebra – Zebra – Who’s Behind the Door?, Tell Me What You Want, Take Your Fingers From My Hair

Towards the end of every decade, a couple of artists emerge with something different, that leads to new trends for the following decade. In 1969, Led Zeppelin took the final step towards what became heavy metal, which Black Sabbath unleashed upon the 1970’s. In the late 1970’s, Van Halen took the world by storm, leading to a guitar explosion in the 1980’s, with one path towards glam metal and another towards thrash. Guns N’ Roses absorbed everything around them and broke it back down as the 80’s ended. This led to the grunge movement of the 1990’s, where the music and the image was more raw and natural. The 90’s were full of actual alternatives, and by the end, hip-hop was making its way into the mix. The 2000’s launched with rap influences found in the music of Linkin Park, Disturbed, Papa Roach and others. As the 2000’s evolved, bad-ass artist such as Shinedown and Halestorm made music personal, sharing the deepest, darkest parts of themselves, while still inspiring us. When the 2010’s wound down, and sharing had become a way of life, artists began looking outwards, writing about the world around them and hoping to bring about positive changes. Bands like Fire From The Gods and Fever 333 led the way to rocking out for social justice.

2020 has been different in many ways, and music has been a reflection of our shared reality. With a global pandemic, a massive social justice movement, and a heated political situation as background, many artists stood up tall to address everything that was going on all around us. There seem to have been more standalone singles recorded and released this year than any other. Some were cover songs, some were re-imagined, and some were written in direct response to the times. Bon Jovi even went so far as to hold the release of their album (mainly due to the cancellation of their summer tour), and recorded 2 new songs – one about the pandemic, “Do What You Can”, and one about racial injustice, “American Reckoning”.

The first trend to hit was a response to the year’s first crisis. As it quickly became apparent that our doctors, nurses and other essential frontline workers were being impacted the most, bands offered emotional and financial support. Nonpoint re-imagined their pro-soldier song “Frontlines” into a pro-healthcare worker anthem “Remember Me (A Frontlines Tribute)”. Shinedown polished off an unreleased track, “Atlas Falls”, and used it to raise money for Direct Relief, who provides personal protective equipment. Bring Me The Horizon unleashed the song of the year, “Parasite Eve”, perfectly capturing the anxiety and fear that continues to grip us all. Halestorm supported #RoadieStrong, an effort to support suddenly out of work concert crew.

The next gut punch to our collective consciousness was the deliberate murder of George Floyd, which sparked the Black Lives Matter movement to achieve worldwide support. FEVER 333 released “SUPREMACY” in their continuing efforts to inspire Community, Charity, and Change. Robb Flynn and Machine Head released “Stop The Bleeding”, and enlisted Jesse Leach from Killswitch Engage to join him. Black Veil Brides recorded a Bruce Springsteen song from the 1990’s, “American Skin (41 Shots)”.

Everyone expected a fierce political battle as the American Presidency was up for grabs, with the current occupant being our most polarizing figure ever, but his strategy of ignoring and minimizing both the pandemic and racial justice poured fuel on a country quite literally on fire for most of the year. Lamb Of God released an album chock full of sociopolitical commentary. They enlisted Jamey Jasta and Chuck Billy to lend their voices. Tom Morello, Shea Diamond & Dan Reynolds combined on “Stand Up”. Amy Lee and Evanescence released the single “Use My Voice”, accompanied by Within Temptation’s Sharon den Adel, violinist Lindsey Stirling, Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale and The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen. The band used the song to publicize HeadCount, which encouraged voter registration. System Of A Down responded to the attacks on Artsakh and Armenia with their first new song in 15 years, “Protect The Land”.

In addition to the trends of releasing singles, and supporting social justice causes, the other thing that should be evident by now is the increased level of collaboration between artists. The hip-hop industry has long used guest vocals as a way to enhance each other’s status, and introduce new artists to their audience. The rock world finally seems to be catching on. Hyro The Hero tapped Hellyeah’s Chad Gray on this week’s “Fight”, capping off a year that saw many interesting combinations. This was preceded by Hollywood Undead featuring Papa Roach & Ice Nine Kills on “Heart of a Champion”. They also have Hyro The Hero and Tech N9ne on new tracks. Corey Taylor also tapped Tech N9ne on his solo debut track “CMFT Must Be Stopped”. Islander added AJ Channer of Fire From The Gods on “Freedom”. I Prevail added Joyner Lucas to “DOA”. Breaking Benjamin enlisted Lacey Sturm on a new version of “Dear Agony”. Sixx: A.M. returned in 2020 to headline the opioid crisis Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation benefit single “Maybe It’s Time”, with an all-star cast that includes Corey Taylor, Joe Elliott, Brantley Gilbert, Ivan Moody, Slash, AWOLNATION and Tommy Vext. The Struts enlisted Joe Elliot and Phil Collen of Def Leppard on “I Hate How Much I Want You”. Even Ozzy Osbourne featured Post Malone and Elton John on 2 of his best tracks in decades, “It’s a Raid” and “Ordinary Man”.

Tom Morello ©2019 Johnnie Crow Photos

If these trends hold true, we can look forward to an exciting decade of rock music, as worlds collide, sounds expand and artists work together to not only make great music, but to leave a positive impact on the world. When concerts and festivals resume, we can only hope that we get to experience some of these musical mashups in person, live on stage.

LOS ANGELES, CA –  It’s been 15 years since the GRAMMY®-winning, multi-Platinum-selling SYSTEM OF A DOWN, one of the most beloved rock bands in the world, released new music.  For years, fans and press speculated about this, and of late, the rumor mill has gone into overdrive hypothesizing when the band might return to the studio.  Today, motivated by the recently-erupted conflict between Artsakh and Azerbaijan, the latter aided by Turkey and accountable for the greatest violence the region has endured in 26 years, System Of A Down – Daron Malakian/guitars, vocals, Serj Tankian/vocals, Shavo Odadjian/bass, and John Dolmayan/drums – announces the release of its first new songs in 15 years:  “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz.”  Produced by Malakian, who also wrote the music and lyrics, both songs are streaming now on all DSPs and are available for purchase on Bandcamp with band royalties earmarked for the Armenia Fund.  You can check out the music video for “Protect The Land”.
So why now?  Last month, profoundly affected by the unwarranted surprise attacks and bombings of civilians perpetrated by Azerbaijan and Turkey (Turkey was responsible for the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 as well as over 100 years of denial), Dolmayan texted his three bandmates.  Said Dolmayan, “I texted, ‘no matter how we feel about each other, no matter what issues linger from the past, we need to put them aside because this is bigger than System Of A Down and bigger than all of us…..we need to do something to support our people.'”  Joined together on a subsequent conference call, everyone voiced the same concern and the vital importance of helping in some way, the way they knew best – music.
“The aggression and injustice being perpetrated against the Armenian people in Artsakh and Armenia by Azerbaijan and Turkey is a human rights violation and a war crime,” said Tankian.  “All of us in System realize this is an existential battle for our people, so this is very personal for us. What we need right now is for the world to put politics aside and support Armenia by sanctioning Turkey and Azerbaijan and recognizing Artsakh.”
Today, System Of A Down also releases the music video for “Protect The Land,” that incorporates recent footage of the protests and on-the-ground fighting in Artsakh, but in a very personal and aesthetic way.  As he did for all previous System Of A Down releases, Odadjian executive produced the music video and curated the cover and brand art for the project.  “I wanted to show the unification of our people around the world for one common cause, illustrating the power in numbers,” he said, “so we brought together people from all ages and professions who believe in and are fighting for that same cause.  It’s one thing to come up with an idea, but to see it come alive as happened with this video, has been just incredible.”
On the recording of “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” Odadjian added, “It was such a pleasure for us to be together in the studio again, very comforting and natural, like no time had passed at all.”

“Epicenter proves to be one of the best festivals out there”

Chimera Magazine

Epicenter entered its first year with an impressive audience of 80,000 converging on the purpose-built Rockingham Festival Grounds in Rockingham, NC over the course of May 10, 11 & 12. The new three-day destination festival provided a unique experience with after-hours programming plus various camping options and amenities.

The weekend kicked off with a special Campers’ Pre-Party on Thursday featuring tribute acts Nightrain and Thunderstruck, as well as the Hellzapoppin Circus Sideshow and local Charlotte band Killakoi. The main event featured a rousing finale from chart-topping rock act Foo Fighters, who offered an incredible two-and-a-half hour set including a special rendition of “My Hero” dedicated to frontman Dave Grohl’s mom on Mother’s Day. Korn closed out night one with a jam-packed set list of hits after a moving tribute to late young rock fan Ally, who lost her battle with cancer in late 2018 after attending previous Danny Wimmer Presents festivals through the partner organization Fxck Cancer / Dyin 2 Live Dreams Program.

Some of the other highlights of the weekend included guitar phenomenon Nita Strauss joining Evanescence for a surprise collaboration on the song “Disappear,” The Crystal Method’s special tribute to Keith Flint, the late frontman of fellow electronica act The Prodigy, the reunion of Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine from That Metal Show during two rare sets, and after hours performances from Wilson, Hyro The Hero, and Arrested Youth.

Armenian-American fusion guitarist STEVE DADAIAN discovered his love for the guitar at a young age. Even while studying at the prestigious Columbia University in the city of New York, Dadaian continued to hone his craft as an artist. The then 21-year-old classically-trained guitarist spent the little spare time he had reaching top spots at national guitar competitions hosted by Slash, John Petrucci (Dream Theater) and Jon Donais (AnthraxShadows Fall), performing at events with the likes of Yngwie MalmsteenSteve Vai, and Nicko McBrain, and dazzling crowds at venues like the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
With his formative years behind him, New Jersey native STEVE DADAIAN has shifted his artistic focus toward the upcoming release of his new full-length concept album, Follow The Light, out February 1, 2019. Follow The Light can be pre-ordered via Bandcamp now, with additional pre-orders available via iTunes, Amazon and more beginning in December.
Today, STEVE DADAIAN revealed the first single and music video from Follow The Light, the title track, “Follow the Light”, in partnership with Guitar World. In the video, bass is performed by Jon-Michael Caldwell and drums by Follow The Light engineer Ethan Bill.
Watch the video and hear the first tidbit of the album here: https://www.guitarworld.com/news/steve-dadaian-premieres-new-follow-the-light-music-video
Dadaian says about the track, “The title track ‘Follow the Light’ has special meaning to me as it was the first song I wrote for this album, and ultimately inspired the other eight songs on the album. With this video, I wanted to showcase the performance in a setting that had imagery consistent with the album artwork. This song represents the ancient structure on the album cover and the beginning of the events that unfold thereafter.”
Featuring razor-sharp solos, theatrical, symphonic soundscapes and unforgettable melodies, Follow The Light starts strong with an ominous, movie-soundtrack-ready introduction preparing the listener for the album, aptly titled “The Journey Ahead”. The album wastes no time beginning its epic tale with the metal/jazz fusion track “Follow The Light”, and continues to flux amid orchestral-influenced pieces such as “Forest Requiem” and larger-than-life metal opuses like “Soul Connection”, the latter of which not only features guest vocals by Soilwork‘s Bjorn Strid, but was originally written by Dadaian for a 2018 songwriting competition held by Serj Tankian of System of a Down. All proceeds from the sale of the track will go to the Creative Armenia Fund, an arts foundation created to discover, develop, produce and promote creative talent around the world.
Follow The Light track listing:
1) The Journey Ahead
2) Follow the Light
3) Forest Requiem
4) Red River
5) Beneath the Citadel
6) Soul Connection (guest vocals by Bjorn Strid of Soilwork, intro theme by Serj Tankian of System of a Down)
7) Presence of Mind
8) Clash in the Corridor
9) On Silver Shores
Follow The Light includes a written component, allowing the listener to follow the album’s epic story both on paper and in auditory form. Dadaian says, “The story follows a mage who has been wandering in a forest in search of a citadel which has been considered folklore. The title Follow The Light refers to the light emanated from the top of the citadel he eventually finds. Though he felt lost, it was actually this light that drew him to his destination.”

“Listeners can find the track titles in the story to get a sense of what I was thinking when I wrote each song,” adds Dadaian. “I personally wrote a short story to accompany the track listing because the music itself has an epic, cinematic aspect to it. This is a different take on the traditional concept album I hope fans of the genre can enjoy.”
STEVE DADAIAN endorses DR strings, ESP Guitars, Synergy Amps, and Lunastone pedals. Dadaian is scheduled to appear at NAMM 2019, with more details to be announced soon.
