STAND UP AND SHOUT FOR RONNIE JAMES DIO’S BIRTHDAY, the star-studded global virtual concert set for Saturday, July 10 from Rolling Live Studios, has continued to add to the lineup of musical talent coming together for one-of-a-kind performances, artist interviews and special birthday messages all for a good cause. The event, hosted on rollinglivestudios.com, begins at 2:00PM Pacific time (PDT), benefiting The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org), founded in memory of the late heavy metal icon who was the voice of Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and DIO before losing his battle with gastric cancer in 2010.

Publisher Teams with the DIO Estate for the Official Graphic Novel Adaptation of the Beloved Classic Album “Holy Diver” and the Artwork It Inspired

News of Z2’s 2021 lineup begins to roll out with news of what is sure to be one of the publisher’s most anticipated projects yet – the Holy Diver graphic novel, creating an original storyline inspired by one of heavy metal’s most iconic album covers. Today’s announcement brings news that acclaimed horror comics writer Steve Niles will tell the tale behind the events leading to the powerful moment captured on the cover of DIO‘s debut album, definitively addressing 30 years of fan speculation. Why is the priest being thrown into the ocean? Who is truly the villain in this scenario? All of these questions are exclusively answered for the first time within the pages of this 120-page graphic novel.

“Steve Niles tells the story behind the album cover ‘Holy Diver’, a story about how you can’t judge a picture by the way it appears, which is what Ronnie wrote many times in his songs; that you have to see inside the person and not judge them by the way they look or by what they wear,” says Wendy Dio. “Together with Scott Hampton‘s amazing artwork they tell the story of ‘Holy Diver’, and I know Ronnie would have given his stamp of approval on this great graphic novel.”

Rock music legend Ronnie James Dio lost his months-long battle with gastric cancer on May 16, 2010. The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org), founded in his memory shortly thereafter, is commemorating the 10^th anniversary of his passing by posting a video on their website highlighting the work it has done to raise more than $2 million to fight the disease that took his life.

The Dio Cancer Fund was able to host a 10^th Anniversary Awards Gala at the Avalon in Hollywood in February, a scant two weeks before large gatherings were banned due to the spread of the coronavirus. In addition to highlighting the Fund’s two main annual fund-raising events— the springtime RIDE FOR RONNIE Motorcycle Ride and Concert (cancelled this year due to the pandemic) and the BOWL FOR RONNIE Celebrity Bowling Tournament held in the fall (scheduled for November 12, 2020)—the video features snippets from the recent Gala as well other representations of the organization’s work.

In addition to its two annual events plus gala dinners more intimate fund-raising efforts and, of course, direct support from the vast community of Dio fans worldwide, the Dio Cancer Fund was also the beneficiary of proceeds from the 2014 Platinum-selling tribute album called This is Your Life containing songs written by Ronnie James Dio that were recorded and donated by major rock and metal recording artists. The This is Your Life album resulted in a 2015 Grammy win for Best Metal Performance for Tenacious D (actor/musicians Jack Black and Kyle Gass) and their rendition of Ronnie James Dio’s “The Last in Line” from the tribute album.

Dr. David Wong, Professor and Associate Dean for Research, UCLA School of Dentistry and Director for UCLA Center for Oral/Head & Neck Oncology Research (COOR), was among the honorees at this year’s 10^th Anniversary Awards Gala. He and his dedicated team of researchers have been developing a simple, non-invasive saliva swab test for the early detection of specific cancers, a concept that is tailor-made for the Dio Cancer Fund’s mission. He believes this simple test, called a liquid biopsy, can and should become part of any routine physical examination conducted in a primary care physician’s office. During his acceptance speech at the Gala, Dr. Wong announced that the financial support from the Dio Cancer Fund had resulted in their research obtaining $8.2 million in additional funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and that he expected a saliva test with “the ability to screen for the earliest sign of gastric cancer” will be available for medical use within the next three years.

In its early stages, the Dio Cancer Fund committed funds over a three-year period to specific gastric cancer research at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where Ronnie James Dio was treated for the last six months of his life. Additionally, the Dio Cancer Fund donated seed money to the Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, via its relationship with the T.J. Martell Foundation, to support research for a blood test to detect gastric and esophageal cancers that the hospital was able to parlay into a multi-million-dollar grant from the NIH.

Ronnie James Dio, the world-renowned voice behind such iconic heavy metal bands as Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Heaven and Hell and his own band, Dio, valiantly battled gastric cancer for some six months after a devastating terminal diagnosis. The Dio Cancer Fund, created in his memory, has made it its mission to help eradicate this disease through education and by association with ground-breaking research into early detection. Rare Live and Studio Bonus Tracks

DIO’s 1996-2004 studio albums – Angry Machines (1996), Magica (2000), Killing the Dragon (2002), and Master of the Moon (2004) – are available today in newly remastered versions, featuring rare and never before released live and studio bonus tracks via BMG.

The albums were remastered by longtime DIO collaborator Wyn Davis with updated artwork from frequent DIO art director Marc Sasso.

“BMG has done such and amazing job pairing the studio albums with the bonus live recordings, AND the lenticular vinyl records look amazing,” says Niji Entertainment Group Inc. President and Owner Wendy Dio. “I am very proud to be working together with them.”

Long out of print on vinyl, the 180-gram black vinyl includes the original tracklistings and is available as a Limited Edition first run with an LP-sized Lenticular album art print. As a special bonus, the Magica 2-LP also contains a 7” single featuring “Electra,” the only known completed track from the planned Magica 2 album.

The CD versions of each album have also been long out of print globally. These newly remastered deluxe versions are showcased in mediabook packaging along with a second disc featuring rare and unreleased bonus material. In addition to rare studio tracks “Electra” (included on Magica) and “Prisoner of Paradise” (included on Master of the Moon), each bonus disc includes a selection of both rare or never before released live tracks from the accompanying tour for each studio release.

All bonus tracks are also available on the streaming/digital versions.

Angry Machines

The gala will celebrate the memory of heavy metal’s most beloved and iconic vocalist, Ronnie James Dio – who passed 10 years ago this coming May 16. 2020.

Now, together on February 20, his live band DIO, who performed with him for his last 17 years, will provide the entertainment for the Memorial Awards Gala. Performances will feature vocalists Tim Ripper Owens and Oni Logan plus band members Simon Wright, Craig Goldy, Scott Warren and Bjorn Englen. Local rockers Sadie & the Tribe will also perform. The Gala will present a live auction, a major silent auction, plus a raffle, featuring luxury items and entertainment memorabilia. Also, VIP attendees will be treated to a gourmet dinner with wine pairings. Additionally, music industry awards will be presented with each of the eight awards named after songs written by Ronnie James Dio.

Each year the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund hosts two annual fundraising events in Los Angeles – The Ride for Ronnie and Bowl For Ronnie events and have raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research, prevention and education. with Gala Awards Fund-Raiser at The Wiltern in Los Angeles

10^th Anniversary Memorial Awards Gala Will Honor Recipients in Eight Award Categories

The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, founded in memory of the late rock music legend, will commemorate the 10^th anniversary of his passing and the formation of the charity with an Awards Gala on February 20, 2020. The Awards Gala will take place at The Wiltern in Los Angeles and will recognize honorees who have played a role in either Dio’s legacy or that of the charity. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m.

The amazing vocals and visuals of Ronnie James Dio with his live band DIO, who performed with him for his last 17 years, will provide the entertainment for the Gala, featuring vocalists Tim Ripper Owens and Oni Logan and band members Simon Wright, Craig Goldy, Scott Warren and Bjorn Englen. Local rockers Sadie & the Tribe will also perform. The evening will also include a live auction, a major silent auction and a raffle, each comprising luxury items and entertainment memorabilia. In addition, VIP attendees will be treated to a gourmet dinner with wine pairings.

Eight awards named after songs written by Ronnie James Dio will be presented to the following distinguished honorees:

The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund was founded in memory of the legendary rock singer Ronnie James Dio, who lost his life to gastric cancer in 2010. A privately funded 501(c)(3) charity organization dedicated to cancer prevention, research and education, the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund has already raised over $2 million in its short history. Monies raised have been committed to the cancer research work of the T. J. Martell Foundation for Cancer, AIDS and Leukemia Research, the gastric cancer research unit of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where Ronnie was treated for gastric cancer during the last six months of his life, and other cancer research projects. Since 2016, the Dio Cancer Fund has also committed funds to support the research of Dr. David Wong and his team at the UCLA School of Dentistry in developing a simple, non-invasive saliva test for the early detection of cancer, which is in keeping with the Fund’s mission of cancer prevention, research and education.

The Fifth Annual RIDE FOR RONNIE Motorcycle Ride and Concert will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2019, benefiting the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. Comprising of a Motorcycle Ride originating at Harley-Davidson of Glendale, California and culminating with a concert at Los Encinos Park in Encino, California, the RIDE FOR RONNIE will raise awareness and funds for cancer prevention and research for a cure. The concert will once again be hosted by radio and television personality Eddie Trunk, who is also curating Eddie Trunk’s All Star Band – a group of stellar rock musicians selected to headline the afternoon of live music. Last year’s Ride brought in over $50,000 for the Dio Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org).

Riders will assemble for a continental breakfast at Harley-Davidson of Glendale with kickstands up at 11:00AM. The Ride will take them around the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley to Los Encinos Park in Encino, where they will be treated to music, a raffle, silent and live auctions, food trucks and much more.

Kicking off the afternoon of live music at the park will be the popular Dio cover band DIA. They will be followed by LA rock band Budderside, Petty Cash, presenting the music of Tom Petty and Johnny Cash, and megarock band DC4. Participants in Eddie Trunk’s All Star Band will be announced shortly.

As always, a silent auction booth will have many amazing items available to bid on throughout the afternoon, while live auctions, featuring one-of-a-kind rock collectibles, will be held from the stage between artist performances.

Sponsors lending their continued support to the RIDE FOR RONNIE include Harley-Davidson of Glendale, Law Tigers, Archie’s Ice Cream and LA’s premier rock radio station, 95.5 KLOS.

“I feel that the ‘II’ album displays a lot more confidence and ambition than ‘Heavy Crown.’ We’ve played a lot of live shows over the last 3 years and I think that we’ve really grown as a band and that’s reflected in the song writing and playing on this record. We’re a band at the top of our game,” says Vivian Campbell when asked to comment about the release of “II.”

Bassist Phil Soussan adds, “I feel very proud and very pleased with what we have done on ‘II.’ Respecting the creative roots of the DIO nucleus, it has taken from that classic style and shot it into a trajectory to create a valid contender in today’s music. The album has universal appeal on the surface and depth where needed. Most of all I am thrilled about how the writing of this album was truly a collaboration between all of us and certainly nothing that could have been done any other way. This album makes a statement that LIL can be seen as an original band in its own right.”

Last In Line was formed in 2011, when Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, (Ronnie James Dio’s co-conspirators and co-writers on the “Holy Diver”, “Last In Line” – the album from which they took their name, and “Sacred Heart” albums) teamed up with esteemed vocalist Andrew Freeman. The debut album “Heavy Crown” was released in February 2016, landing at #1 on the Billboard Heat-Seekers Chart. Initially, the release had been preceded by tragedy when bassist Jimmy Bain unexpectedly passed away at the age of 68 on January 23, 2016. Last In Line, honoring what they knew would be Bain’s wish to keep the band moving, brought in renowned bassist Phil Soussan (ex-Ozzy Osbourne) and committed to sustained touring in support of the album, hitting festivals, headlining clubs, and sharing the stage with metal luminaries such as Saxon and Megadeth.

In late 2017, the band gathered in L.A. to start the recording of the second album, which was produced by the band members and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End Machine, ex-Dokken), who also produced the debut album. Having really gelled as a band while touring in support of the debut album, the songwriting came readily to the members. They’ve created a record that shows a big progression in sound, while immediately being recognizable as Last In Line thanks to Vinny Appice’s rhythms, thunderous bass from Soussan, amazing vocals from Andrew Freeman, and the roaring guitars of Vivian Campbell.
