The 5th annual Blue Ridge Rock Festival took place in Alton, Virginia on September 8 – 11, 2022. Day 4 felt like a time warp, transporting us back 2 decades with a lineup that could have been the concert of the year in 2002.

Disturbed ©2022 Johnnie Crow Photosed

Disturbed capped off a day where the sun came out to stay (kudos to Elias Soriano of Nonpoint for leading the crowd in a rain banishing chant, which actually worked!) and the rap-rock sounds of the turn of the century dominated.

Nonpoint ©2022 Johnnie Crow Photos

Hoobastank was outstanding. Lead singer Doug Robb teased the crowd about whether or not to play their mega-hit ballad “The Reason” at such a heavy festival. He demanded mosh pits and crowd surfing, which made for a hilarious juxtaposition as the entire venue sang along to the slow moving love song.

Hoobastank ©2022 Johnnie Crow Photos

Saliva brought original vocalist Josey Scott out to play the last 3 songs, which was a treat for the crowd, but unfortunately not captured by the photographers, who typically only shoot the first 3 songs.

Lamb Of God ©2022 Johnnie Crow Photos

Lacey Sturm, Seether, Hollywood Undead, Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage, New Found Glory, (Hed) P.E., Twiztid and The Devil Wears Prada showed their staying power and kept the nostalgic vibe going, even as the weary crowd streamed out throughout the day.

3 Doors Down ©2022 Johnnie Crow Photos

Those who stayed to the bitter end were treated to incredible sets from 3 Doors Down and Disturbed. Both bands marked the anniversary of 9/11 by dedicating songs to everyone lost that day, as well as all those who continue to put themselves in harm’s way – firefighters, police, doctors, nurses and EMT’s.

Towards the end of every decade, a couple of artists emerge with something different, that leads to new trends for the following decade. In 1969, Led Zeppelin took the final step towards what became heavy metal, which Black Sabbath unleashed upon the 1970’s. In the late 1970’s, Van Halen took the world by storm, leading to a guitar explosion in the 1980’s, with one path towards glam metal and another towards thrash. Guns N’ Roses absorbed everything around them and broke it back down as the 80’s ended. This led to the grunge movement of the 1990’s, where the music and the image was more raw and natural. The 90’s were full of actual alternatives, and by the end, hip-hop was making its way into the mix. The 2000’s launched with rap influences found in the music of Linkin Park, Disturbed, Papa Roach and others. As the 2000’s evolved, bad-ass artist such as Shinedown and Halestorm made music personal, sharing the deepest, darkest parts of themselves, while still inspiring us. When the 2010’s wound down, and sharing had become a way of life, artists began looking outwards, writing about the world around them and hoping to bring about positive changes. Bands like Fire From The Gods and Fever 333 led the way to rocking out for social justice.

2020 has been different in many ways, and music has been a reflection of our shared reality. With a global pandemic, a massive social justice movement, and a heated political situation as background, many artists stood up tall to address everything that was going on all around us. There seem to have been more standalone singles recorded and released this year than any other. Some were cover songs, some were re-imagined, and some were written in direct response to the times. Bon Jovi even went so far as to hold the release of their album (mainly due to the cancellation of their summer tour), and recorded 2 new songs – one about the pandemic, “Do What You Can”, and one about racial injustice, “American Reckoning”.

Nonpoint / Hyro The Hero ©2019 Johnnie Crow Photos

The first trend to hit was a response to the year’s first crisis. As it quickly became apparent that our doctors, nurses and other essential frontline workers were being impacted the most, bands offered emotional and financial support. Nonpoint re-imagined their pro-soldier song “Frontlines” into a pro-healthcare worker anthem “Remember Me (A Frontlines Tribute)”. Shinedown polished off an unreleased track, “Atlas Falls”, and used it to raise money for Direct Relief, who provides personal protective equipment. Bring Me The Horizon unleashed the song of the year, “Parasite Eve”, perfectly capturing the anxiety and fear that continues to grip us all. Halestorm supported #RoadieStrong, an effort to support suddenly out of work concert crew.

The next gut punch to our collective consciousness was the deliberate murder of George Floyd, which sparked the Black Lives Matter movement to achieve worldwide support. FEVER 333 released “SUPREMACY” in their continuing efforts to inspire Community, Charity, and Change. Robb Flynn and Machine Head released “Stop The Bleeding”, and enlisted Jesse Leach from Killswitch Engage to join him. Black Veil Brides recorded a Bruce Springsteen song from the 1990’s, “American Skin (41 Shots)”.

Gojira / Lamb Of God ©2019 Johnnie Crow Photos

Everyone expected a fierce political battle as the American Presidency was up for grabs, with the current occupant being our most polarizing figure ever, but his strategy of ignoring and minimizing both the pandemic and racial justice poured fuel on a country quite literally on fire for most of the year. Lamb Of God released an album chock full of sociopolitical commentary. They enlisted Jamey Jasta and Chuck Billy to lend their voices. Tom Morello, Shea Diamond & Dan Reynolds combined on “Stand Up”. Amy Lee and Evanescence released the single “Use My Voice”, accompanied by Within Temptation’s Sharon den Adel, violinist Lindsey Stirling, Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale and The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen. The band used the song to publicize HeadCount, which encouraged voter registration. System Of A Down responded to the attacks on Artsakh and Armenia with their first new song in 15 years, “Protect The Land”.

In addition to the trends of releasing singles, and supporting social justice causes, the other thing that should be evident by now is the increased level of collaboration between artists. The hip-hop industry has long used guest vocals as a way to enhance each other’s status, and introduce new artists to their audience. The rock world finally seems to be catching on. Hyro The Hero tapped Hellyeah’s Chad Gray on this week’s “Fight”, capping off a year that saw many interesting combinations. This was preceded by Hollywood Undead featuring Papa Roach & Ice Nine Kills on “Heart of a Champion”. They also have Hyro The Hero and Tech N9ne on new tracks. Corey Taylor also tapped Tech N9ne on his solo debut track “CMFT Must Be Stopped”. Islander added AJ Channer of Fire From The Gods on “Freedom”. I Prevail added Joyner Lucas to “DOA”. Breaking Benjamin enlisted Lacey Sturm on a new version of “Dear Agony”. Sixx: A.M. returned in 2020 to headline the opioid crisis Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation benefit single “Maybe It’s Time”, with an all-star cast that includes Corey Taylor, Joe Elliott, Brantley Gilbert, Ivan Moody, Slash, AWOLNATION and Tommy Vext. The Struts enlisted Joe Elliot and Phil Collen of Def Leppard on “I Hate How Much I Want You”. Even Ozzy Osbourne featured Post Malone and Elton John on 2 of his best tracks in decades, “It’s a Raid” and “Ordinary Man”.

Tom Morello ©2019 Johnnie Crow Photos

If these trends hold true, we can look forward to an exciting decade of rock music, as worlds collide, sounds expand and artists work together to not only make great music, but to leave a positive impact on the world. When concerts and festivals resume, we can only hope that we get to experience some of these musical mashups in person, live on stage.

Six months into the 2020 global pandemic, and I have literally started dreaming about attending festivals, photographing concerts, and interviewing artists. Music festivals and live concerts have been postponed, rescheduled and canceled, sometimes all three. As the fall events have finally been eliminated, and the winter rock cruises have been pushed into May, I have no idea when I will be lucky enough to cover an actual concert again. In the meantime, GameOn.media presents Fantasy Festival Friday – a fictitious concert performed by 5 bands we wish we could watch live in person, at full volume, with all of our rock family in attendance.

On Fantasy Festival Friday #1, our imaginations were thrilled by a nonstop barrage of aggressive, thought-provoking heavy rock sounds.

Fantasy Festival

Fire From The Gods got our feet moving, and our minds expanding, with their reggae-spiced rock sounds. The set included timely hits including “Right Now”, “Break The Cycle” and “Excuse Me”. Vocalist AJ Channer has been extremely active in recent months, helping to spread a message of positive change. Fire From The Gods consists of Channer, guitarists Drew Walker and Jameson Teat, bassist Bonner Baker, and drummer Richard Wincader.

Next up was Fever 333, a band formed 3 years ago in Inglewood, California, with the express intent of raising awareness and making their voices heard. Their blend of hip hop and punk rock is the perfect vehicle to describe the reality of so many Americans. Their latest single “Supremacy” is just the latest socially conscious banger in an already impressive catalog. Lead singer Jason Aalon Butler, guitarist Stephen Harrison and drummer Aric Improta are dynamic live performers.

Nonpoint is another band who has been highly active throughout the quarantine. They re-imagined their song “Frontlines” into “Remember Me (A Frontlines Tribute)”, complete with fan-created content in the accompanying video. They also used social media to allow fans to choose their next cover song, in a March Madness style tournament. Stay tuned for more from vocalist Elias Soriano, drummer Robb Rivera, guitarists Rasheed Thomas and Jason Zeilstra, and bassist Adam Woloszyn. This stellar band was electric onstage, and engaging offstage, still meeting fans at the merch table 2 decades into their career.

Nonpoint ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

P.O.D. kept the energy level high while elevating the crowd to a spiritual plane of existence. They played inspirational hit after hit, everything from “Alive” and “Southtown” to “Listening for the Silence” and “Circles”. Lead vocalist Sonny Sandoval commanded the stage. Drummer Wuv Bernardo and bassist Traa Daniels kept the fans moving and swaying throughout the set. Guitarist Marcos Curiel played those beautiful notes that pull it all together.

P.O.D. ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

As if the night couldn’t get any better, Sevendust arrived to cap off this incredible evening. Hot off the recording of their 13th album, “Blood & Stone”, which drops in October, the band was recharged and ready to rock. Drummer Morgan Rose is healthy again and still a beast behind the kit. Bassist Vince Hornsby holds up the low end while individually acknowledging every fan in attendance. Guitarists John Connolly and Clint Lowery thrashed through decades of classics, also supplying brilliant backing vocals. Lowery released 2 solo albums this year, and appeared anxious to get back on stage after his solo tour was cut short. Lajon Witherspoon remains one of the top vocalists in rock, an emotional performer and the most genuine, appreciative lead man in any band.

2020 has been a tumultuous year, to say the least. A worldwide pandemic, an historic human rights movement, and the death of legendary musicians has rocked the world unlike any year in recent memory. Live concerts, festivals and tours have come to a stop. Planned album release cycles have been put on hold. Several artists have released singles that help us connect and deal with the issues that 2020 has forced upon us. These are our Five Fave Rock Singles of 2020 So Far.

#5 – Shinedown – Atlas Falls

“We need music, and each other, now more than ever as we all are witnessing a global pandemic, unlike anything we’ve ever seen in many generations. Years ago during the writing and recording of the ‘Amaryllis’ album, there was a song that meant a great deal to us titled “Atlas Falls.” It has never been more clear to us than right now, that the time has come for the never before heard song, “Atlas Falls” to arrive. We’ve partnered with an incredible organization, Direct Relief, who are doing important work globally to help the medical community receive the protective equipment they need in order to save lives. As the world responds to this global pandemic, we want to offer a message of optimism and faith in humanity. We ask that you share this anthem of strength and show the world how you’re delivering optimism and awareness during this time.” – Shinedown

It won’t pull me down
The weight of impossible days
I’ll stand tall
I’ll rise up and carry us all the way

#4 – Black Veil Brides – American Skin (41 Shots)

“‘American Skin (41 Shots)’ is a song originally written and performed by Bruce Springsteen inspired by the police shooting and death of a young black man named Amadou Diallo in New York City in the late 90’s. Tragically the subject matter of this song is as relevant today as it’s ever been and so we wanted to share with you our own rendition of this song and urge you to donate to support the movement for justice and anti racist organizations. While obviously a song alone will not be an inflection point for societal change, we as artists wanted to share something in support of this incredibly important time in history and direct you to organizations who are at the forefront of effecting real change and fighting against the systemic oppression and racism that the black community and people of color face every single day.” – Black Veil Brides

If an officer stops you
Promise me you’ll always be polite
And that you’ll never ever run away
Promise Mama, you’ll keep your hands in sight

#3 – Machine Head (feat. Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage) – Stop The Bleeding

“I wrote and sang the lyrics on Wednesday May 27th, 2020, the day that the four officers who murdered George Floyd were (originally) not charged with anything. This day was engulfed in protests and riots across America. I drove into Oakland, past large demonstrations already happening and, in a fury, wrote down everything I was feeling after watching the horrific footage. Within hours, what I wanted to say, what I needed to say, had been recorded in the song.” – Robb Flynn, Machine Head

I stare and look out at the world in disgust
These men are dying over nothing just
Good men stand up and show your bravery
For a lost democracy
Our democracy

#2 – FEVER 333 – Supremacy

“The advantages we predict we will see if crossing demographics musically to proliferate a message that MUST find its way over the barriers of genre. Music and art have served as the catalyst for socially inclined movements for as long as we can remember, but for some reason, at a time where we are now granted the ability to see how deeply flawed our system is, we have slowed the charge for change. FEVER 333 has dedicated its entire platform to that change from its inception with its music, activism, even its own charity fund that sees a percentage of proceeds funneled from all profits the project receives. This is not a marketing method this is a tool for change. Please consider widening this message for the people with FEVER 333 by joining us in this effort.” – FEVER 333

When time turns into history
The story that we’ll tell will be
When we were marching for our lives
You stood on the other side

#1 – Nonpoint – Remember Me (A Frontlines Tribute)

“Essential by definition is something that is absolutely necessary; extremely important. A worker can be defined as person who does a specific kind of work. A person who achieves a specified thing as in, ‘They are working miracles.’ With this video our band is celebrating only one thing. We hope you will join us to honor, give thanks, cheer and revere those who are essential. Who work countless hours and months on end. Who put their lives at risk to keep you safe. Who leave their families just to help you feed yours. Who give their service to brave the frontlines of something mankind faces together. Who you may never meet, have the opportunity to say thank you to or whose name you may never know.” – Nonpoint

Will you remember me?
Can’t you remember why?
Even though you didn’t ask me to
I risk my life for you

Full Lyrics:

Shinedown – Atlas Falls

The push is always part of us
And gravity’s never a friend
Deciding on who we can trust
And finding our way to crescendo, to the unknown

We’ll never make it outside
Lest we unlock the past and release
The future that we’ve left to die
For too long we’ve taken placebos
But the unknown, is awakening

Don’t give up now, there’s already so much at stake
If Atlas falls, I’ll rise up and carry us all the way

No, we can never look back
Return to the salt and the sea
The quiet is only a trap
And I will not take the placebos
‘Cause the unknown is awakening
But I will crescendo

Don’t give up now, there’s already so much at stake
If Atlas falls, I’ll rise up and carry us all the way

It won’t pull me down
The weight of impossible days
I’ll stand tall
I’ll rise up and carry us all the way

Keep moving forward now
Keep your head above the clouds
I’m right with you, I will lift you
Just hold on

Don’t give up now, there’s already so much at stake
If Atlas falls, I’ll rise up and carry us all the way

It won’t pull me down (moving forward now)
The weight of impossible days (keep your head above the clouds)
I’ll stand tall (I’m right with you, I will lift you, just hold on)
I’ll rise up and carry us all the way
I’ll carry us all the way
(Keep moving forward now)

Black Veil Brides – American Skin (41 Shots)

41 shots
And we’ll take that ride
Across this bloody river
To the other side
41 shots
Cut through the night
You’re kneeling over his body in the vestibule
Praying for his life

Is it a gun? Is it a knife?
Is it a wallet? This is your life
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
No secret, my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin

41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots

41 shots
Mary gets her son ready for school
She says, “On these streets, Alex
You’ve got to understand the rules
If an officer stops you
Promise me you’ll always be polite
And that you’ll never ever run away
Promise Mama, you’ll keep your hands in sight”

Is it a gun? Is it a knife?
Is it a wallet? This is your life
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
No secret, my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin

[Chorus] 41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots

Is it a gun? Is it a knife?
Is it in your heart? Is it in your eyes?
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)

41 shots
And we’ll take that ride
Across this bloody river
To the other side
41 shots
I got my boots caked in this mud
We’re baptized in these waters (we’re baptized in these waters)
And in each other’s blood (and in each other’s blood)

Is it a gun? Is it a knife?
Is it a wallet? This is your life
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
It ain’t no secret (It ain’t no secret)
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin

Machine Head (feat. Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage) – Stop The Bleeding

The endless scroll of human tragedy
I swipe along as the days go by
Another brother murdered out in the streets
I connect to the shame, we don’t know what it’s like

Born lucky ’cause the color of skin
America, your heart is caving in
Somehow I thought this was the land of the free
Where is our humanity?
Our humanity

Beating after beating
Throat choked under knee
Help me, please
Because I can’t breathe
Just stop the bleeding
Body after body
Piled up in the streets
Stand and fight
Not another life
Just stop the bleeding

And some will claim it’s a conspiracy
The fake news out to undermine
When riots fight off white supremacy
Never given a choice, so they’re drawing a line

I stare and look out at the world in disgust
These men are dying over nothing just
Good men stand up and show your bravery
For a lost democracy
Our democracy

Beating after beating
Throat choked under knee
Help me, please
Because I can’t breathe
Just stop the bleeding
Body after body
Piled up in the streets
Stand and fight
Not another life
Just stop the bleeding

Our strife
Our struggle
Fight through these open wounds
Our strife
Our struggle
Fight through these open wounds

Beating after beating
Throat choked under knee
Beating after beating
Throat choked under knee
Help me, please
Because I can’t breathe
Just stop the bleeding

Body after body
Piled up in the streets
Stand and fight
Not another life
Just stop the bleeding now
The bleeding now
The bleeding

Our strife (our strife)
Our struggle (our struggle)
Fight through these open wounds

FEVER 333 – Supremacy

Born into a world
Where we’re dying to be free
But we’re living underneath their supremacy
Yeah, yeah, yeah

See I was raised in the west
Where we stay stressed
Where they lie if they have to
To make an arrest
‘Cause we living in the shadow of the suburbs
While the price of this house is going upwards
I don’t understand how
The poor get robbed by the rich
And they calling it a handout
(Aw, hell nah)
And it’s evident
The neighborhood fucked up
Got us sending letters to the president

Tell me, can you hear us?
Through the sounds of the sirens
And you wonder why the streets getting violent
Another mother shed tears at the cemetery
Burying a first born child (damn)
I’ve been watching through the years
Got my nerves firing, waking up screaming
And we live in a cold sweat
Segregated, they consider us a known threat
So we hopeless, ayy

Born into a world
Where we’re dying to be free
(I just wanna be free, let’s go)
But we’re living underneath their supremacy
(Looking out from, we ain’t out from their supremacy)
One day you’ll see us
But until then we’ll all sit and wait
For the rapture
(Ain’t no more waiting)

They trying to relegate my DNA
Break it down into something easier to hate
They afraid of the outcome
‘Cause the race they call human
Keep evolving and they know they will get outrun
(That’s why, huh?)
Still behind on the times, yeah
Protest culture on strike like lightning (damn)
Losing hold and control, so we rising
Put the muzzle on, but we won’t stay silent

Born into a world
Where we’re dying to be free
(I just wanna be free, let’s go)
But we’re living underneath their supremacy
(Underneath, under their supremacy)
One day you’ll see us
But until then we’ll all sit and wait
For the rapture (What you waiting for?)
(Go and get it)

When time turns into history
The story that we’ll tell will be
When we were marching for our lives
You stood on the other side

When time turns into history
The story that we’ll tell will be
When we were marching for our lives
You stood on the other side

When time turns into history

When we were marching for our lives
You stood on the other side

Nonpoint – Remember Me (A Frontlines Tribute)

Will you remember me?
Can’t you remember why?
Even though you didn’t ask me to
I risk my life for you

You may never know my name
You might not even care
But when the world is burnin’ down
You’re gonna want me there
Gonna want me there

On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life
On the frontlines
Knowin’ tomorrow, I may not be alive
On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life
On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life

Fightin’ for your…

When you need protection
Without an agenda
Without an intention
When you’ve given up
You’ve lost your direction
I’ll be your glimmer of hope
I’ll be your north star
I’ll be your north star

On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life
On the frontlines
Knowin’ tomorrow, I may not be alive
On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life
On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life

On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life
On the frontlines
Knowin’ tomorrow, I may not be alive
On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life
On the frontlines
Fightin’ for your life

Fightin’ for your life

The world seems to be shifting perspective, and reconsidering assumptions. There are many rock bands who you have sang along to, banged your head to, moshed to, and crowd-surfed to. Several of them have been attempting to educate and enlighten you in the process. Were you listening, really listening? Do you pay attention to the lyrics? Do you research the incidents, experiences and circumstances that led to their artistic expression? Now is the time to revisit some recent albums, but with a new perspective. In the spirit of education and empathy, here are our Five Fave Rock Albums That Matter Right Now.

5. Body Count feat. Ice-T – Bloodlust – 2017 (and Carnivore – 2020)

Body Count ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

Ice-T has spent his career in rap and rock speaking loudly about social issues, particularly police violence against the black community. On his most recent albums, he broadens that focus, realizing that those in power work diligently to categorize, divide and antagonize the majority of the people they pretend to rule. These songs speak directly to the frustration, desperation and anger that so many have faced for so long. He combines rock vocals with spoken word and actual media clips to drive his points home.

Anywhere, any time
They shoot first and ask questions last
Could be yours, could be mine
And then they point the finger at you

  • Body Count “Point The Finger”

4. Nonpoint – X – 2018

Nonpoint ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

Nonpoint is another band who have touched on social issues throughout their career. Vocalist Elias Soriano is more poet than lyricist, and he makes his points in a more subtle and general way than Ice-T does. As in all great art, the consumer can draw their own impressions from the work, and sometimes songs take on new meanings as your personal experiences and world view broaden. Nonpoint recently recorded and released a new single during the quarantine, honoring all those who risk their own life to save strangers, “Remember Me (A Frontlines Tribute)”.

There’s a name for all of this
A shame in all of this
Done watchin’ in disbelief
Done turnin’ the other cheek
Doesn’t seem right to me
But maybe this is how it’s all supposed to be?

You don’t really want to fix this

    • Nonpoint “Fix This”

3. P.O.D. – Circles – 2018

P.O.D. ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

P.O.D. is a band from Chula Vista in San Diego which has been talking about the American experience for 2 decades. They have always maintained their religious faith and incorporate that into their lyrics. While speaking truth about the darkest days and experiences of life, they offer hope and optimism amidst the heartache.

So who are you to say what life is like, that life is good?
And I bet whoever said it never walked up in my hood
So I wish you would, and maybe you should
You should discover what is missing, since you misunderstood

  • P.O.D. – “Fly Away”

2. Fire From The Gods – American Sun – 2019 (and Narrative – 2016)

Fire From The Gods ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

Fire From The Gods combines rock with reggae, a music form that is synonymous with social injustice and pleads for healing. Vocalist Akil “AJ” Channer is a brilliant lyricist and vocalist who speaks truth to power, while searching for answers and common ground. The acknowledgement of mistakes and existence of issues are important first steps towards working for peaceful and equitable solutions.

How can we exist in a constant state of crisis
Society in conflict
All the ignorance betrays a weakness
Too much pride to admit there’s a sickness
Vacant emotions
Like walking corpses

Something’s gotta change
Right now

  • Fire From The Gods “Right Now”

1. Fever 333 – Strength In Numb333rs – 2019

Fever 333 ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

Fever 333 is a project started in 2017 by vocalist Jason Aalon Butler, guitarist Stephen Harrison and drummer Aric Improta, with writing and production from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. The band intentionally formed to provide a soundtrack to the protests that have been building over time, and are now dominating the world. Their 2018 EP “Made an America” and 2019 full length debut “Strength In Numbers” focus on the raw emotions from a life growing up in Inglewood, California, watching family and friends struggle against the systemic oppression and racism that have once again boiled over nationally. Their musical style is based in punk rock and hip-hop. The lyrics are cutting and emotional, and should make people feel uncomfortable. The band recently released a single “Supremacy”, which they debuted during a live demonstration dubbed “Long Live The Innocent”, which can be seen below. All proceeds benefit Black Lives Matter & Minnesota Freedom Fund.

They gotta isolate, they gotta segregate this
Just to keep us down, to keep us broken down, to keep us on the streets
Another body laying on the floor now
Tell everybody they better take their tone out
When talking about it, and everything they saw
No justice, no peace, we at war with the law

  • Fever 333 “One Of Us”

Rock USA 2019 took place on July 18-20 on farmland in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This incredible festival always has an amazing crowd, great food and beverage options, and the best rock bands on the planet. Despite a massive storm on Day 2, everyone came back strong on Day 3 and Nonpoint got people moving early that afternoon.

Nonpoint ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

Nonpoint dominated the second stage on Saturday, July 20, 2019. That just so happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing, when Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins traveled to, landed on and set foot on the Earth’s moon. The stage itself and the area surrounding it seemed too small to contain so much energy and excitement. The crowd was packed tight, front to back and side to side, moving and singing along with one of the best live bands around.

As of now, Rock USA 2020 is hoping to go on as scheduled – July 16-18, 2020. Stay informed and check out the killer lineup at http://www.rockusaoshkosh.com/

Michigan hard rockers Deepfall played the House of Blues in San Diego, California on December 17, 2019, supporting Hellyeah and Nonpoint on the A Celebration Of Life tour. The packed house was prepared for an intense, emotional evening, and Deepfall fit right in with their turn of the century vibe. Their sound is reminiscent of Creed, Saliva and Drowning Pool.

The band is comprised of Rich Hopkins (vocals/guitar), Nick Gray (drums), Tim King (keyboards), Anthony Battista (lead guitar 1), Max Carrillo (lead guitar 2), and Taylor Brandt (bass). Despite their opening slot and small stage area, they were highly active and entertaining. They featured songs off their latest release “Broken”, whose personal lyrics match the driving melodies.

Their only misstep was a cover of Journey’s “Separate Ways”, which was heavy but fell short in the emotional department. They violated the #1 rule of cover song choice, which is to never cover a world-class vocalist. This rules out Journey, Heart, Celine Dion, Dio and the like. They sounded much better when playing their originals.

Vocalist Elias Soriano, drummer Robb Rivera, lead guitarist Jason Zeilstra, rhythm guitarist Rasheed Thomas, and bassist Adam Woloszyn lived up to the high standard they have created for themselves over 2 decades of musical brilliance.

Nonpoint always brings high energy and emotion to their live show, and this was no exception. The packed House of Blues was a swirling pit of activity throughout their set. Despite their status and stature, they remain humble and hard working, hanging out with every fan after the show, taking selfies and signing autographs.

Hellyeah continued their Celebration Of Life tour at the House of Blues in San Diego, California on December 17, 2019. The show was an early Christmas present as friends and fans gathered to celebrate the life and music of drumming legend Vinnie Paul. Nonpoint and Deepfall put on energetic shows to get the crowd primed for an intense, emotional set led by Chad Gray’s impassioned vocals and emotional stories. Guitarists Tom Maxwell and Christian Brady traded licks over bassist Kyle Sanders wild energy. Stone Sour drummer Roy Mayorga played the drums brilliantly.

Hellyeah decided to finish the album they had begun before Vinnie Paul’s sudden passing, and completed it as a tribute to thier blood brother in arms. The resulting album is as emotionally powerful as it is musically. The band performed a tribute concert in Las Vegas, and was touched by the love, support and catharsis shared equally by artist and fan alike. The rock and roll community is truly a family, and they decided that they had to “Keep on keepin’ on”, as Paul like to say, by taking the tribute on the road to visit family.

Chad Gray spent most of the show in the crowd, making a physical connection with as many people as he could – screaming together, moshing and crowd surfing. He gave several motivational speeches which lifted the spirits of everyone there. They ended the celebration with 2 Pantera songs, “I’m Broken” and “Walk”, joined by Nonpoint vocalist Elias Soriano. For the encore, they went back to the beginning with 2 songs from their first album. Music heals and binds us, and Hellyeah still has so much more to give to us all.

“Seeing everybody — the excitement on their faces. It’s genuine … It’s been a little rocky, emotionally, for everybody. It’s been a minute since we’ve been out, so it takes some time, but the main thing is giving the fans that glimpse that everything is going to be alright, and it’s been great.”
– Tom Maxwell, Consequence of Sound
Hard rock purveyors HELLYEAH are home after an 18-city “A Celebration Of Life” headliner, honoring the life of bandmate and brother Vinnie Paul, a tour during which friends and fans in HELLYEAH’s heavy metal family mourned and celebrated their hero together.
“An explosive performance that made you mosh, made you smile, made you cry as he spoke of
Vinnie and made you love HELLYEAH even more. It was truly a remarkable and uniquely emotional night for every member of the band. …made this one of the most special concert experiences I’ve ever had.”

2018 was one of the best years in recent memory when it comes to quality album releases from some of the biggest names in hard rock. The most common theme was struggling with the past couple of years, both internally and externally, while searching for a path to better days and a hopeful future.

Most people don’t listen to music on hard media these days, but if any of you happen to have any of these on vinyl, give it a spin and let us know how much better it sounds.

Here are our 33-1/3 favorite hard rock albums of 2018.

1. Shinedown – ATTENTION ATTENTION

Not only a great collection of individual songs that grow on you as time passes, but a concept album exploring the human condition and fragile state of mind.

Best song: GET UP

2. Tremonti – A Dying Machine

On Mark Tremonti’s 4th solo album, the band is at the top of their song writing game, and Mark’s vocals are his best yet.

Best song: Bringer Of War

3. Halestorm – Vicious

Halestorm continues to elevate, expanding their style and always delivering substance. Lzzy Hale’s voice reaches insane heights on this album, full of swagger and a wink of the eye.

Best song: Do Not Disturb

4. Bullet For My Valentine – Gravity

A biting tale of betrayal and redemption, with gnarly guitars and snarling sing along choruses.

Best song: Over It

5. Adelitas Way – Live Love Life

An exploration into sound and instrumentation, with a lot of heart. A band that keeps getting better with time.

Best song: Still Hungry

6. Atreyu – In Our Wake

This album just moves you physically and emotionally, a nonstop assault on your senses.

Best song: Anger Left Behind

7. Sevendust – All I See Is War

Some bands improve with age, and Sevendust is one that keeps writing better and better songs.

Best song: God Bites His Tongue

8. Godsmack – When Legends Rise

Godsmack returned with their best work since the first two albums. Killer lyrics and a few chances vocally and musically that really pay off.

Best song: Under Your Scars

9. Like A Storm – Catacombs

If you don’t know this New Zealand band of brothers, you are missing out. Creative sounds and meaningful lyrics.

Best song: Complicated (Stitches & Scars)

10. Judas Priest – Firepower

The Metal Gods put together their best album since Painkiller, almost 3 decades ago. Shreds upon shreds, and Rob Halford just killing it.

Best song: Rising From Ruins

11. Disturbed – Evolution

Disturbed extended themselves on Evolution, exploring new sounds while addressing the lost of loved ones to addiction and depression. While not quite the grand slam that Immortalized, it is still another home run from a band who is now 7 for 7.

Best song: A Reason To Fight

12. Pop Evil – Pop Evil

Pop Evil self titled this album, fittingly so as it sums up all of the best qualities of the band. Tight musicianship, inspiring vocals and meaningful lyrics.

Best song: Be Legendary

13. All That Remains – Victim Of The New Disease

The mysterious death of founding guitarist Oli Herbert shortly before the album’s release lends an otherworldly quality to this powerful performance. The songs are full of guitars and intense vocals.

Best song: Everything’s Wrong

14. P.O.D. – Circles

P.O.D. knocks it out of the park on this one, mixing old school hip hop into their Cali vibe rock and roll.

Best song: Soundboy Killa

15. Alice In Chains – Rainier Fog

The last ones standing are still setting the bar for the Seattle sound.

Best song: Never Fade

16. Ghost – Prequelle

Perhaps the first concept album based on the Plague and the Black Death which killed off half of Europe, Prequelle is spooky, spiritual and catchy.

Best song: Dance Macabre

17. Nonpoint – X

Nonpoint continues their unique phrasing and riffing on their 10th album, another stellar effort.

Best song: Fix This

18. Red Sun Rising – Thread

Red Sun Rising continues the hit-making momentum on their second effort, proving that they will be around for a long time.

Best song: Veins

19. Parkway Drive – Reverence

This is the heaviest album on the list, and probably tops most metal lists for the year. Very aggressive, but also full of hooks.

Best song: The Void

20. Ice Nine Kills – The Silver Scream

Each song is based off of a classic horror movie, a concept that could get corny but never does here, as the tunes stand on their own and the lyrical content touches on an aspect of the movie without becoming cliff notes.

Best song: A Grave Mistake

21. Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators – Living The Dream

One of the most complete albums that Slash has delivered in some time. The Conspirators are a tight band and this sounds most like a band album, rather than a solo act.

Best song: Mind Your Manners

22. Five Finger Death Punch – And Justice For None

5FDP has a formula and they are sticking with it. Fast songs, ballads, and interesting cover songs.

Best song: When The Seasons Change

23. Breaking Benjamin – Ember

The band who practically invented the rock radio sound does it again, showcasing their immense vocal talent and musicianship.

Best song: Torn In Two

24. Three Days Grace – Outsider

Three Days Grace finally comes into its own with this version of the band, ditching the self-loathing for an optimistic view on life.

Best song: The Mountain

25. The Alarm – Equals

Legendary rebels The Alarm returned with an outstanding record, still questioning the status quo and pushing for peace.

Best song: Peace Now

26. Dorothy – 28 Days In The Valley

Dorothy Martin has one of the best bluesy rock voices that you will ever hear. This trippy album could be the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Best song: Ain’t Our Time To Die

27. Jonathan Davis – Black Labyrinth

The leader of Korn has been quietly working on his solo album for years, and we finally got to experience the fruits of his labor. Very personal and very deep.

Best song: Basic Needs

28. Myles Kennedy – Year Of The Tiger

Somehow Myles Kennedy found time between Alter Bridge and Slash commitments to put out a solo album. This is all Myles, which means it is amazing.

Best song: The Great Beyond

29. Suicidal Tendencies – STill Cyco Punk After All These Years

A sort of new album, which is actually a re-recording of an old Mike Muir solo album. Doesn’t matter, it’s new to me and it is infectious.

Best song: Ain’t Gonna Get Me

30. Avatar – Avatar Country

Dilly Dilly! Avatar returned with an album exclusively about the King. Always heavy and always fun.

Best song: The King Wants You

31. Amaranthe – Helix

Amaranthe fears nothing, blending all kinds of music, with three vocalists getting into the mix.

Best song: Inferno

32. Skillet Side Dishes: Ledger – LEDGER, Fight The Fury – Still Breathing

The members of Skillet took a hiatus and produced 2 separate EP’s. Drummer/vocalist Jen Ledger put out a strong solo album, co-produced by guitarist Korey Kooper. Bassist/vocalist John Kooper got his metal on with guitarist Seth Morrison.

Best song: Not Dead Yet, My Demons

33. Greta Van Fleet – Anthem Of The Peaceful Army

Hot newcomers Greta Van Fleet, the family band with the Zeppelin sound, put out their first full album. While not as strong as their EP From The Fires, it still boasts some great tracks.

Best song: Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer)

33-1/3. Them Evils – Rollin’ Stoned and Livin’ Free (EP)

Them Evils is a throwback rock band on the rise. This EP showcases the promise of what is to come, real rock and roll shaking our asses.

Best song: Practice What You Preach
