Alter Bridge has begun their 2023 North American “Pawns & Kings” Tour. The first show took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa, Florida on January 25, 2023. Red and Mammoth WVH featuring Wolfgang Van Halen were the supporting acts.

The Events Center at the Hard Rock Tampa is a perfect venue for concerts. The floor section was open for standing, and there are 4 sets of bleacher seating behind that. That allows every attendee to choose their preferred viewing location.

The place was packed, and fans could be heard singing along to all of their favorites. Alter Bridge also played a good selection of new songs from their 7th album. Every song went over well.

Despite having 2 opening acts, Alter Bridge still performed a full headlining set, playing for 1 hour and 45 minutes. They got 17 songs in, covering their entire 2 decades of brilliance. Spoiler alert: full set list below.

Red opened the night with an intense set, warming up with the audience with their passionate performance. Michael Barnes, Anthony Armstrong and Randy Armstrong have been together for 20 years and it shows.

Mammoth WVH had 45 minutes to showcase Wolfgang Van Halen’s incredible talents on vocals, guitar and keyboards. Their songs are tremendous and sound great in person. Wolfgang performed every note of his solo debut album, so he had to recruit a killer band to play the songs live. Garrett Whitlock, Frank Sidoris, Jon Jourdan and Ronnie Ficarro are already a tight unit, delivering songs with precision.

Finally, Scott Phillips, Brian Marshall, Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy took the stage, nearly 3 years since their last U.S. show. Their emotional lyrics and beautiful music are always a blessing to experience live in concert. The connection between fan and artist is clearly evident to all.

With 2023 less than three weeks old, acclaimed rockers ALTER BRIDGE are back with a new single and music video to launch the new year! The song “Holiday” has been a fan favorite since it was made public with the release of Pawns & Kings last October, and is currently one of the most added songs at Active Rock radio.

The “Holiday” video marks the return of longtime video collaborator Dan Sturgess of Sturge Media – known for capturing the band’s iconic performance with the Parallax Orchestra on Alter Bridge: Live At The Royal Albert Hall. The song is currently impacting US radio and the video for “Holiday” can be seen below!

Watch the music video for “Holiday”

Pawns & Kings – the band’s seventh studio album – was released worldwide on October 14 via Napalm Records. From the opening riffs of “This Is War” to the title track album closer “Pawns & Kings,” ALTER BRIDGE returns with an album of intense tracks that were born after the cycle for their last album was cut short by the global pandemic. Songs like “Dead Among The Living,” “Holiday”  and “Last Man Standing” showcase the signature songwriting the band is known for. The album offers numerous epic adventures, with three songs clocking in over six minutes each. The opus “Fable Of The Silent Son” clocks in at 8:29 and is the longest recorded song in the band’s catalog – a distinction held by “Blackbird” until now. Mark Tremonti steps out of his backing vocal role to take the lead on “Stay,” an introspective ballad that is sure to become a fan favorite live. The band have released lyric videos for the title track Pawns & Kings”, the now fan-favorite “Sin After Sin” and album opener “This Is War”. These songs all found their way into the band’s set list during their European tour.

Known for its signature dual-guitar attack backed by a driving rhythm section, the album’s debut single “Silver Tongue” shot up the charts around the globe and is currently still in the Top 25 in Canada. Its animated music video was created and directed by Ollie Jones of Better Feeling Films (Myles Kennedy, Prodigy, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets) and has garnered over 1.4 million views and counting. Pawns & Kings found its way on numerous 2022 year-end lists around the world, and was produced by longtime collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette.

The track listing for Pawns & Kings is:
1)   This Is War
2)   Dead Among The Living
3)   Silver Tongue
4)   Sin After Sin
5)   Stay
6)   Holiday
7)   Fable Of The Silent Son
8)   Season Of Promise

Alter Bridge will be back on North American concert stages this winter. These musicians return with a quiet dedication to writing meaningful songs and performing unforgettable shows (and they’ve delivered both with almost alarming consistency). Still, the influential quartet—Myles Kennedy [vocals, guitar], Mark Tremonti [guitar, vocals], Brian Marshall [bass], and Scott Phillips [drums]—ascend to yet another level on 2022’s Pawns & Kings [Napalm Records]. It is the culmination of almost two decades together soaked in blood, sweat, tears, and the triumph earned through never giving up. It represents the bandmates’ dedication to one another and their collective devotion to a devout fanbase.

As the world continues to battle the recent Covid-19 outbreak, recent changes across the United States and its impact on communities are causing ALTER BRIDGE to postpone their upcoming headline tour with special guests Black Stone Cherry and Saint Asonia.

ALTER BRIDGE explains:

“To the entire Alter Bridge family:

We hoped that it wouldn’t come to this, but as some of you have already heard; unfortunately, due to recent changes around the globe created by the recent Covid-19 situation, the May headline tour of the United States with Black Stone Cherry and Saint Asonia will be postponed. The health and safety of everyone attached to these shows (fans, artists, crew members, venue staff, etc) is our main priority. More information regarding rescheduled dates will be available in the future. We look forward to the time when we can all come together and celebrate music as the community and family we are. Until then, Stay Home, Stay Healthy and Stay Safe…”

In an effort to show support to everyone being affected by the global pandemic, Myles Kennedy recently performed acoustic in partnership with American Songwriter for their Behind The Mic series. Aside from discussing songwriting and his musical inspirations in front of a live global audience on Facebook, Myles performed songs from various projects including ALTER BRIDGESlash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, and from his critically acclaimed debut solo album from 2018.

The live event has been viewed over 470K times on Facebook and is now live on YouTube here:

Alter Bridge burst onto the music scene in 2004 with the release of their gold-selling debut, One Day Remains. In 2007, the band released Blackbird, the album that elevated the band’s profile worldwide. The epic solo in the title track “Blackbird” was voted “Greatest Guitar Solo Of All Time” by Guitarist Magazine. ABIII was released in 2010 and the single “Isolation” gave the band their first #1 single. In 2013, the band reached an elevated creative and critical plateau with Fortress. It bowed at #12 on the Billboard Top 200, moving over 30,000 copies first-week and earning unanimous tastemaker praise. The record garnered perfect scores from Total Guitar and KERRANG! as well as acclaim from Billboard, The Guardian, Loudwire, Ultimate Guitar, and many more. In between sold out tours in Europe and North America, the guys appeared on VH1 and graced the cover of Classic Rock Magazine who labeled Fortress, “The best thing they’ve ever done,” while Eddie Trunk called it, “A top 10 album of the last 10 years.” 2016’s The Last Hero gave the band their first Top 10 album since their debut. ALTER BRIDGE has appeared on The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live and their music has been used by the WWE, Major League Baseball and NASCAR to name a few. The band recently released the video and audio of their career highlight, Live At The Royal Albert Hall, featuring ALTER BRIDGE backed by the 52-piece Parallax Orchestra led by conductor Simon Dobson. In December 2019, Guitar World magazine voted Mark Tremonti the Guitarist of the Decade and their latest album Walk The Sky ended up on numerous year end lists signifying ALTER BRIDGE are showing no signs of slowing down.

With six outstanding albums to choose from, Alter Bridge has reached that stage where they could play for hours and you would still be able to wish they had played more songs. They played 4 songs each from their latest classic “Walk The Sky” and landmark “Blackbird”, 3 songs from “One Day Remains” and “Fortress”, and 2 songs from “AB III”. The full set list is below. This was perhaps my favorite sequencing of songs, with perfect pacing that took fans on an emotional journey.

Alter Bridge ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

There is perhaps no better concert experience than seeing a well-oiled machine of a band in a more intimate club or theater setting. The Wiltern offers multiple levels of standing room, balcony seating, a large stage, incredible lighting and perfect sound.

Alter Bridge ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

After 16 years together, Alter Bridge continues to rise in their songwriting and performances. Drummer Scott Phillips masterfully leads the group through all of their time signatures and sonic emotions. Bassist Brian Marshall is the epitome of cool, hanging back or stepping forward as the song dictates. Vocalist / guitarist Myles Kennedy just keeps getting better and better on vocals and guitar. Lead guitarist / vocalist Mark Tremonti shows his MVP status with his solos, riffs, harmony vocals and even lead vocals. This combination of musical brothers complements and enhances each other, producing one of the best live rock shows you will ever experience.

“’All I Had To Lose’ is one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written,” MORTON says. “Mark Morales’ incredible vocal performance really brought it to life and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I’m so grateful to get the opportunity to stretch out stylistically and appreciate everyone who’s given this stuff a listen!”
Ether, a primarily acoustic five-song EP, is scheduled for release on January 17 via Rise Records.
As with last year’s solo debut, Anesthetic, the guitarist enlisted the talents of various musicians and vocalists to bring his songs to life. In addition to Morales, who regularly tours as part of MORTON’s live band, Ether features appearances by Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Howard Jones (Killswitch Engage, Light the Torch), John Carbone (Moon Tooth). The EP is made up of three original songs and two covers that once again showcase MORTON’s diversity as a musician.
Ether tracklisting:
1. All I Had To Lose (featuring Mark Morales)
2. The Fight (featuring John Carbone)
3. She Talks To Angels (featuring Lzzy Hale) *The Black Crowes cover

5. Black (featuring Mark Morales) *Pearl Jam cover
Ether was produced and mixed by Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God, Gojira, Trivium).

Special Guests Include Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Howard Jones (Light the Torch), Mark Morales (Sons of Texas) and John Carbone (Moon Tooth)
Lamb of God guitarist MARK MORTON returns in 2020 with his second solo offering, entitled Ether, a primarily acoustic five-song EP scheduled for release in January via Rise Records/BMG.
As with MORTON’s solo debut, Anesthetic, released earlier this year, the guitarist enlisted the talents of various musicians and vocalists to bring his songs to life. Ether features appearances by Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Howard Jones (Killswitch Engage, Light the Torch), John Carbone (Moon Tooth) and Mark Morales (Sons of Texas), who is also a member of MORTON’s live band. The EP is made up of three original songs and two covers that once again showcase MORTON’s diversity as a musician.
Says MARK MORTON, “I’m thrilled to announce the upcoming release of my new, five song EP, ‘Ether,’ on Rise Records! Once again, I’ve had the great pleasure of working with some
amazingly talented artists and friends to assemble this collection of tunes, all of which feature a strong acoustic guitar component. Inspired by the acoustic sets I had the opportunity to perform last spring and summer in support of ‘Anesthetic,’ I began writing some new songs to reflect that more mellow vibe. I’m stoked with the results and I can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been putting together. I’ll be debuting these tunes on my upcoming U.K. acoustic tour, so you can hear them live before they’re released anywhere else!”
“I continue to be honored to have the chance to work with so many incredibly talented people and I remain beyond grateful to the fans that have come along with me and supported these projects. Thanks so much everyone!”

First single from Ether, “All I Had to Lose” featuring Mark Morales, will be released January 10.
Ether was produced and mixed by Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God, Gojira, Trivium).
Following his first UK acoustic performance at the Download festival earlier this year, MARK MORTON will return for a handful of special and intimate acoustic shows in January 2020.
MARK MORTON comments, “We had such an amazing time with the acoustic set at Download and I’m really looking forward to expanding on that experience with these upcoming shows. Joining me once again will be Mark Morales on vocals and guitarist extraordinaire, Joe Harvatt. I can’t wait to make each show extra special for you all with an evening of stories, acoustic versions of many of the songs from Anesthetic, and a few covers of some of our favorite tunes. We’ll also be debuting some new original material as well! Look forward to seeing you all!”
MARK MORTON UK tour dates:
1/8 – Bristol, UK @ Thekla
1/9 – Manchester, UK @ Academy 3

Joyous Wolf is a young band with an old soul, making them a perfect choice to open for Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Deep Purple. Vocalist Nick Reese, guitarist Blake Allard, bassist Greg Braccio, and drummer Robert Sodaro bring a classic rock and roll sensibility to their music and performance. The Long Goodbye Tour stopped at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California on September 6, 2019.

We caught up with the Southern California boys after their well-received set, to discuss the whirlwind year they are experiencing. Joyous Wolf has been signed to Roadrunner (Atlantic Records), recorded their debut album “Place In Time”, created several videos, toured for 6 months with Buckcherry, and opened for Stone Sour, Slash with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, and now Deep Purple. When asked what their most memorable day in the past year was, the answered varied from “Tomorrow”, “Today”, “Being accepted and tutored by Buckcherry”, to “Being able to open for Slash”. They are very appreciative of the way that the experienced bands have treated them, and they study what it takes to maintain a long career in music.

The band always spends time at the merch booth, signing autographs and taking selfies with every fan, truly putting in the effort to win over each individual.  They put the same work in onstage, squeezing everything they have into their allotted time, engaging the crowd who typically doesn’t know who they are, many of whom end up joining the Joyous Mob.

Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators–Slash (guitars), Myles Kennedy (lead vocals), Todd Kerns (bass), Brent Fitz (drums) and Frank Sidoris (rhythm guitar) are currently on their worldwide tour through Asia, New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the U.K., the group has announced they’ll kick off a headlining U.S. tour this summer. The U.S. trek will launch on July 15 in San Francisco and wrap-up August 13 in Orlando. Tickets will go on-sale this Friday, February 8 at 10AM local time and are available at http://www.slashonline.com.
The iconic, GRAMMY-winning guitarist Slash and his band, Slash ft. Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators are touring worldwide in support of their acclaimed third album LIVING THE DREAM and will release the new single “Mind Your Manners”–which Rolling Stone hailed “a menacing blues-rocker”–to radio starting today, February 4. The song–which already debuted at #39 ahead of its official radio impact date–follows the first single Driving Rain–Slash’s fastest rising single to date—which recently became the band’s 5th Top 5 hit in a row at Rock Radio.
“I wrote ‘Mind Your Manners’ on the spot to help the band get up and running once we got back in the studio,” explains Slash. “It’s just a go-for-it type of rock song. Straightforward and fun to play.”
“’Mind Your Manners’ was something I didn’t even hear until the guys had already started jamming together in the studio,” adds Myles Kennedy. “I listened to the final rough arrangement, and I thought it was a really cool, up-tempo sort of thing.’ Lyrically, it’s about how when things are going well there always tends to be someone who tries to rain on your parade and knock you down. You have to keep people like that in check and not let them get to you.”
Loudwire hailed “Mind Your Manners” as “the album’s most infectious rock single” while Rolling Stone added “The guitarist alternates between ragged power chords and squealing solos throughout the song; on the chorus, Kennedy layers his voice into stacked harmonies.” Elsewhere, The Guardian described the riff-rocker, “slithers and slides, with a dirty boogie.”
The group called-out to fans who created a live music video of their electrifying two hour show on the final date of their sold-out, U.S. headlining tour last fall; watch the “Mind Your Manners” fan clip HERE.
LIVING THE DREAM (Snakepit Records/RoadRunner Records) is the third full-length offering from Slash ft. Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators. The Los Angeles Times described the album as, “his best work since the demise of Velvet Revolver. …full of “unexpected funk, boogie, blues and garage rock influences.” While Rolling Stone declared the album, “a biting blues filigree at the end of a riff, weeping solos full of long notes, boogie-woogie riffs.” Elsewhere, Classic Rock hailed, “the bands third and Best Album, ‘The Great Pretender’ is the album’s masterpiece and one of the best things Slash has ever done.” Fans can purchase or stream LIVING THE DREAM HERE. Fueled by the Top 5rock song “Driving Rain,” its live-action, animated video as well as the best critical acclaim of their career, LIVING THE DREAM debuted with 10, Top 10 chart placements around the world.  The first single “Driving Rain” which jumped to the Top #5–marks the band’s 6th consecutive, Top 10 single at radio and Slash’s fastest-rising single ever in his solo career.

2018 was one of the best years in recent memory when it comes to quality album releases from some of the biggest names in hard rock. The most common theme was struggling with the past couple of years, both internally and externally, while searching for a path to better days and a hopeful future.

Most people don’t listen to music on hard media these days, but if any of you happen to have any of these on vinyl, give it a spin and let us know how much better it sounds.

Here are our 33-1/3 favorite hard rock albums of 2018.

1. Shinedown – ATTENTION ATTENTION

Not only a great collection of individual songs that grow on you as time passes, but a concept album exploring the human condition and fragile state of mind.

Best song: GET UP

2. Tremonti – A Dying Machine

On Mark Tremonti’s 4th solo album, the band is at the top of their song writing game, and Mark’s vocals are his best yet.

Best song: Bringer Of War

3. Halestorm – Vicious

Halestorm continues to elevate, expanding their style and always delivering substance. Lzzy Hale’s voice reaches insane heights on this album, full of swagger and a wink of the eye.

Best song: Do Not Disturb

4. Bullet For My Valentine – Gravity

A biting tale of betrayal and redemption, with gnarly guitars and snarling sing along choruses.

Best song: Over It

5. Adelitas Way – Live Love Life

An exploration into sound and instrumentation, with a lot of heart. A band that keeps getting better with time.

Best song: Still Hungry

6. Atreyu – In Our Wake

This album just moves you physically and emotionally, a nonstop assault on your senses.

Best song: Anger Left Behind

7. Sevendust – All I See Is War

Some bands improve with age, and Sevendust is one that keeps writing better and better songs.

Best song: God Bites His Tongue

8. Godsmack – When Legends Rise

Godsmack returned with their best work since the first two albums. Killer lyrics and a few chances vocally and musically that really pay off.

Best song: Under Your Scars

9. Like A Storm – Catacombs

If you don’t know this New Zealand band of brothers, you are missing out. Creative sounds and meaningful lyrics.

Best song: Complicated (Stitches & Scars)

10. Judas Priest – Firepower

The Metal Gods put together their best album since Painkiller, almost 3 decades ago. Shreds upon shreds, and Rob Halford just killing it.

Best song: Rising From Ruins

11. Disturbed – Evolution

Disturbed extended themselves on Evolution, exploring new sounds while addressing the lost of loved ones to addiction and depression. While not quite the grand slam that Immortalized, it is still another home run from a band who is now 7 for 7.

Best song: A Reason To Fight

12. Pop Evil – Pop Evil

Pop Evil self titled this album, fittingly so as it sums up all of the best qualities of the band. Tight musicianship, inspiring vocals and meaningful lyrics.

Best song: Be Legendary

13. All That Remains – Victim Of The New Disease

The mysterious death of founding guitarist Oli Herbert shortly before the album’s release lends an otherworldly quality to this powerful performance. The songs are full of guitars and intense vocals.

Best song: Everything’s Wrong

14. P.O.D. – Circles

P.O.D. knocks it out of the park on this one, mixing old school hip hop into their Cali vibe rock and roll.

Best song: Soundboy Killa

15. Alice In Chains – Rainier Fog

The last ones standing are still setting the bar for the Seattle sound.

Best song: Never Fade

16. Ghost – Prequelle

Perhaps the first concept album based on the Plague and the Black Death which killed off half of Europe, Prequelle is spooky, spiritual and catchy.

Best song: Dance Macabre

17. Nonpoint – X

Nonpoint continues their unique phrasing and riffing on their 10th album, another stellar effort.

Best song: Fix This

18. Red Sun Rising – Thread

Red Sun Rising continues the hit-making momentum on their second effort, proving that they will be around for a long time.

Best song: Veins

19. Parkway Drive – Reverence

This is the heaviest album on the list, and probably tops most metal lists for the year. Very aggressive, but also full of hooks.

Best song: The Void

20. Ice Nine Kills – The Silver Scream

Each song is based off of a classic horror movie, a concept that could get corny but never does here, as the tunes stand on their own and the lyrical content touches on an aspect of the movie without becoming cliff notes.

Best song: A Grave Mistake

21. Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators – Living The Dream

One of the most complete albums that Slash has delivered in some time. The Conspirators are a tight band and this sounds most like a band album, rather than a solo act.

Best song: Mind Your Manners

22. Five Finger Death Punch – And Justice For None

5FDP has a formula and they are sticking with it. Fast songs, ballads, and interesting cover songs.

Best song: When The Seasons Change

23. Breaking Benjamin – Ember

The band who practically invented the rock radio sound does it again, showcasing their immense vocal talent and musicianship.

Best song: Torn In Two

24. Three Days Grace – Outsider

Three Days Grace finally comes into its own with this version of the band, ditching the self-loathing for an optimistic view on life.

Best song: The Mountain

25. The Alarm – Equals

Legendary rebels The Alarm returned with an outstanding record, still questioning the status quo and pushing for peace.

Best song: Peace Now

26. Dorothy – 28 Days In The Valley

Dorothy Martin has one of the best bluesy rock voices that you will ever hear. This trippy album could be the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Best song: Ain’t Our Time To Die

27. Jonathan Davis – Black Labyrinth

The leader of Korn has been quietly working on his solo album for years, and we finally got to experience the fruits of his labor. Very personal and very deep.

Best song: Basic Needs

28. Myles Kennedy – Year Of The Tiger

Somehow Myles Kennedy found time between Alter Bridge and Slash commitments to put out a solo album. This is all Myles, which means it is amazing.

Best song: The Great Beyond

29. Suicidal Tendencies – STill Cyco Punk After All These Years

A sort of new album, which is actually a re-recording of an old Mike Muir solo album. Doesn’t matter, it’s new to me and it is infectious.

Best song: Ain’t Gonna Get Me

30. Avatar – Avatar Country

Dilly Dilly! Avatar returned with an album exclusively about the King. Always heavy and always fun.

Best song: The King Wants You

31. Amaranthe – Helix

Amaranthe fears nothing, blending all kinds of music, with three vocalists getting into the mix.

Best song: Inferno

32. Skillet Side Dishes: Ledger – LEDGER, Fight The Fury – Still Breathing

The members of Skillet took a hiatus and produced 2 separate EP’s. Drummer/vocalist Jen Ledger put out a strong solo album, co-produced by guitarist Korey Kooper. Bassist/vocalist John Kooper got his metal on with guitarist Seth Morrison.

Best song: Not Dead Yet, My Demons

33. Greta Van Fleet – Anthem Of The Peaceful Army

Hot newcomers Greta Van Fleet, the family band with the Zeppelin sound, put out their first full album. While not as strong as their EP From The Fires, it still boasts some great tracks.

Best song: Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer)

33-1/3. Them Evils – Rollin’ Stoned and Livin’ Free (EP)

Them Evils is a throwback rock band on the rise. This EP showcases the promise of what is to come, real rock and roll shaking our asses.

Best song: Practice What You Preach
