Welcome To Rockville continued to fill the Daytona International Speedway with heavy music and passionate fans on Friday, May 19, 2023.

WTR23 The Warning – Lexie Alley

The Warning played a great set on the Space Zebra main stage. The Villarreal Vélez sisters from Mexico were dressed in white, a smart choice based on the oppressive heat during a daytime show. Lead singer Daniela even strapped on a white explorer guitar for their version of Enter Sandman, which Metallica had requested for the black album reissue. The Warning delivers a powerful sound from 3 small women.

WTR23 Ayron Jones – Steve Thrasher

Ayron Jones was shredding along with his boys from the Puget Sound on the Octane stage. The only thing hotter than the sun beating down on the crowd was Ayron’s hot licks. He played several new songs, along with his recent hits. Ayron told the crowd that he was there for the other outcasts, freaks and misfits.

WTR23 Badflower – Steve Thrasher

Badflower crushed their performance on Space Zebra main stage. They cleverly played “It’s 5:00 Somewhere” as they walked on stage a little after 5:00. Josh Katz came out in a white cutoff T-shirt which parodied himself, and a pink beanie hat. Insanely, they were only given 30 minutes, so they tore through “Don’t Hate Me”, ” Johnny Wants To Fight”, “Heroin”, “The Jester”, “Ghost”, “Stalker” and “30”. Josh roamed the pits to get close to everyone. Fans sang along to every word. It was a phenomenal show which ended far too soon. This festival could be improved with fewer artists and longer sets for the bigger acts.

WTR23 Sleeping With Sirens – Lexie Alley

Sleeping With Sirens rocked the Octane stage with their high energy squeaking, like a puppy with an annoying toy.

WTR23 Motionless In White – Steve Thrasher

Motionless In White lit up the Space Zebra main stage, quite literally, with plenty of fire, lights and videos. This was the 1st US show of 2023 for the goth metal hit makers. They recalled playing Welcome To Rockville a lot, but this was their 1st time at Daytona. Chris Cerulli exclaimed “Welcome to watch the goth band melt in the sun show!” He thanked Florida radio and SiriusXM Octane for their 1st #1 hit “Masterpiece”, which was a huge singalong. They had a guest screamer,  David Benites, on Reincarnate. They had time for 10 songs and each one got a huge reception.

WTR23 I Prevail – Steve Thrasher

SXM host Jose Mangin had his wife Melissa Mangin introduce I Prevail on the Octane stage. Women really seem to love this band.

WTR23 Hardy – Steve Thrasher

Country star Hardy played the main stage. There was some controversy about having him on the lineup. It would be interesting to see if he can win people over. The band, 2 guitarists and a drummer, came out rocking to lasers. Hardy came out looking like a yoked Kid Rock, singing “Sold Out” with the massive crowd singing along. “Kill Sh!t Till I Die” went over very well in gun loving Florida. The overall vibe was country songs with alt rock music.  Hardy played a guitar for “Jack”. He told the crowd “This is our first ever rock show. We are a rock band tonight.” Some of the songs echoed Green Day in sonic tone, others were metal and thrashy. The show was all rock, with smoke and lights. They did a cool cover of “Big Empty” from Stone Temple Pilots. He played his ironic “Radio Song”, joined by Florida’s own Jeremy McKinnon of A Day To Remember. Hardy shotgunned a beer while singing “The Redneck Song”, which brought an extended “Hardy! Hardy!” chant from the crowd, and that put a huge smile on his face. He wanted to play one country song that changed his life and showed how thankful he is to live in greatest country in world. He covered Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country” which ended with another huge chant of “USA! USA! USA!” He finished with “The Mockingbird & The Crow. There was no doubt that he belonged at this festival.

WTR23 Evanescence – Lexie Alley

Evanescence delivered the best show of the day on the Octane stage. The band’s newest member, Emma Anzai, provided angelic backing vocals and incredible bass playing. Amy Lee has so much power and emotion, even had the crowd roaring in response to an acapella whisper. Amy challenged everyone to use their voice and fight for each other and for what is right. She reminded that we are all in this together, and she hopes that love will win. For the encore, she mentioned that it has been 20 years since the “Fallen” album was released. They are still out here doing it, and having more fun than ever. Everyone sang along to “My Immortal”, and attempted to keep up with her unmatched vocal skills on “Bring Me To Life”.

WTR23 Avenged Sevenfold – Steve Thrasher

Finally, it was time for the long awaited return of Avenged Sevenfold, after 5 years away. A7x led off with a slow, weird and chaotic new song, “Game Over”. They also had a weird instagram filter on the live video screens, which looked like Thanos has snapped his fingers. Then things kicked into gear when they started “Afterlife”, which got the fans psyched. “Hail To The King” kept things moving along nicely. After that, M. Shadows noted that they have been gone awhile, and they have to get used to the energy brought by the crowd. He introduced another new song, “We Love You”, which was frankly not good. Most people were just confused. It changed tone drastically throughout, from club pulse to acoustic slide guitar and heavy breathing. It sounded like a German Nine Inch Nails song. Shadows could sense the crowd’s confusion and commented “Give it some time; you might like it some day.”

There was a huge roar as they started playing “Buried Alive”. There’s nothing cooler than the lefty-righty back-to-back double solos from Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates. Next was a touching tribute to “The Rev” in front of “So Far Away”. Shadows reminded everyone to be in the present in the moment and enjoy the life you have today. Tell people you love them enjoy moments like this. Thousands put up their lighters and phones in tribute.

A third new song, “Nobody”, got the best reception, with a riff reminiscent of Alice In Chains. The rest of the set was classic A7X. Despite the set being a bit short for a headliner, and Shadows admitting that the band had a ways to go in order to return to form, it was a wonderful experience all around. Not many cared about anything else but enjoying the experience of “Nightmare”, “Bat Country”, “Unholy Confessions” and “A Little Piece Of Heaven”. Welcome back!

2022 saw the return to full time touring and consistent album release cycles. With many artists forced off the road for 2 years, creativity flourished and a ton of great music was released in 2022. Nothing gets your heart racing and blood pumping like heavy music. Here are our Five Fave: 2022 Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Albums.

#5 – Slipknot – The End, So Far

Slipknot released “The End, So Far” and it is a unique chapter in their history. Within an hour of music, the band travels roads both familiar and unexpected. The songs are heavy without being frantic. Corey Taylor uses all of his range, from guttural growls to plaintive pleas. If this is “The End”, it is a fitting final chapter. If not, then there are even more exciting days ahead for Maggots around the world.

Standout Tracks: Yen, H377, Finale

Slipknot ©2019 Johnnie Crow Photos

#4 – Soulfly – Totem

Soulfly has been a metal machine, turning out 12 albums since 1998. Vocalist / guitarist Max Cavalera has always led the way. His son Zyon Cavalera has been on the drums since 2012 and bassist Mike Leon on bass since 2015. “Totem” plays upon the elements of traditions such as meditation and tribal prayer ceremonies. The trip is bumpy and loud, but well worth taking.

Standout Tracks: Spirit Animal, The Damage Done, Totem

#3 – Motionless In White – Scoring The End Of The World

Chris “Motionless” Cerulli and Motionless In White continue to refine their sound and their songwriting skills. “Scoring The End Of The World” is yet another master class in accessible modern metal. Few vocalists can sing clean and dirty with equal skill, and few bands can wring melodies out of the typical nu-metal chug. Guitarists Ricky “Horror” Olson and Ryan Sitkowski drop in and out of the special effects with perfect timing. Drummer Vinny Mauro and bassist Justin Morrow drive the beat to fit the current mood within each song. MIW has created another dose of horror-pop which should draw even more fans into their wicked web.

Standout Tracks: Werewolf, Masterpiece, We Become The Night

#2 – Machine Head – OF KINGDOM AND CROWN

Robb Flynn, lead singer and guitarist of Machine Head, has done it again. The first album with new band members guitarist Wacław Kiełtyka and drummer Matt Alston is another banger. Jared MacEachern has covered bass and backing vocals for a decade, and the overall sound is familiar. Similar to Dave Mustaine and Megadeth (who narrowly missed this list with their excellent The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!), you know who you are listening to, no matter who else is filling out the lineup. The concept behind this album is an intertwined tale of Ares, who loses the love of his life and goes on a murderous rampage, and Eros, who loses his mother to overdose, gets depressed and goes on a killing spree, ultimately murdering Ares’ love.

Standout Tracks: N0 G0ds N0 Masters, Arr0ws In W0rds Fr0m The Sky, Bec0me The Firest0rm

Machine Head ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

#1 – Parkway Drive – Darker Still

Thirty seconds into the opening track of “Darker Still”, fans of Parkway Drive get everything they have come to love from the Australian powerhouse. “Ground Zero” quietly sums up the last 3 years of isolated uncertainty which gripped the world. Winston McCall painfully whispers “The fights, the falls, the scars and broken bones. Beneath it all, the cracks begin to show. The hate, the hurt, we’re no better off alone.” then screams as only he can. Guitarists Jeff Ling and Luke Kilpatrick enter with the heavy, yet hummable riffing and bassist Jia O’Connor and drummer Ben Gordon blast beat into the fray. Just like that, we are off and running and the passion and precision never let up. There is not a missed step on this entire album. It is pure perfection and an emotional journey through the darkness, headed towards the light at the end of the tunnel.

Standout Tracks: Ground Zero, Glitch, Darker Still

The 5th annual Blue Ridge Rock Festival took place in Alton, Virginia on September 8 – 11, 2022. Day 3 was a wet one, with a slow and steady rain throughout most of the day and into the night. Thankfully there were no lightning storms forcing evacuations, which has seemed to plague so many outdoor rock festivals.

Once again, there were too many bands playing too many stages, and the concert you missed was probably as good as the concert you saw.

Starset ©2022 Johnnie Crow Photos

Between dodging raindrops and hiding under stages protecting my camera equipment, I was able to capture Butcher Babies, Adelitas Way, Powerman 5000, Mushroomhead, Starset (both acoustic and electric headliner set, complete with pyro and fireworks), Motionless In White, Skillet and Tenacious D featuring Kyle Gass and Jack Black.

Skillet ©2022 Johnnie Crow Photos

The show I didn’t see included The Dead Daisies, Crowbar, Upon A Burning Body, The Word Alive, Apocalyptica, Black Veil Brides, Ice Nine Kills, Queensryche, From Ashes To New, God Forbid, Thrice, Pierce The Veil, Gwar, Pennywise, I Prevail and Slipknot.

Sion (featuring Howard Jones) and Lacuna Coil (featuring Cristina Scabbia) were late scratches, and unfortunately did not perform.

Despite days of exhaustion, muddy grounds and soaked clothing, the crowd never let up on their passion and physicality.

Blue Ridge Rock Festival 2022 has announced their full lineup and daily schedules, and we cannot wait for this event to start its engines. Ghost, Mudvayne, Slipknot and Disturbed are the main headliners on Thursday through Sunday, September 8-11, 2022, with a bonus Wednesday night event featuring Puddle Of Mudd. This time around, you won’t have to worry about miles of walking and figuring out which artists you will miss. Seven months into the 2020 global pandemic, and all we can do is dream about attending festivals, photographing concerts, and interviewing artists. Music festivals and live concerts have been postponed, rescheduled and canceled, sometimes all three. That doesn’t mean we can’t imagine. In the meantime, GameOn.media presents Fantasy Festival Friday – a fictitious concert performed by 5 bands we wish we could watch live in person, at full volume, with all of our rock family in attendance.

On Fantasy Festival Friday #5, we went back in time to revisit our favorite travelling festival – Vans Warped Tour. We gathered our favorite bands who rocked the metal stages through the 2010’s. These bands have grown up before our eyes and are now rocking arenas worldwide. Kevin Says presents Asking Alexandria, Motionless In White, Black Veil Brides, Miss May I, and Ice Nine Kills.

Ice Nine Kills was one of the major stars of the final years of Vans Warped Tour. Their latest album ‘The Silver Scream’ contains songs based on classic horror movies, and the band took full advantage of the genre in their stage set and costumes. Spencer Charnas and crew really got the audience going with their intensity and creativity.

Ice Nine Kills ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

Miss May I kept up the intensity with their guitar-heavy style of metalcore. Levi Benton, Justin Aufdemkampe, BJ Stead, Jerod Boyd, and Ryan Neff play with the precision and passion born of more than a decade rocking together. If you don’t know this band, you need to check out their catalog. It has been a minute since their last album, so hopefully they will be adding to their impressive collection of bangers soon.

Black Veil Brides thrilled fans with a special performance of their debut album ‘We Stitch These Wounds’, which they recently re-recorded and released as ‘Re-Stitch These Wounds’. Andy Biersack (vocals), Jake Pitts (lead guitar), Jinxx (rhythm guitar, violin), Christian “CC” Coma (drums), and new bassist Lonny Eagleton, who recently replaced Ashley Purdy, were on point throughout the set. They encored with 2014 song of the year “In The End” and hinted at a possible concept album to come.

Black Veil Brides ©2020 Johnnie Crow Photos

Motionless In White cranked up the volume and cranked out the hits. With 5 incredible albums in 10 years, MIW never let up for a second. Chris Motionless had the crowd singing and screaming along with every song, showcasing one of the best clean/dirty voices in all of rock. Ryan Sitkowski, Ricky “Horror” Olson, Vinny Mauro and Justin Morrow played flawlessly. The gothic stage set provided an eerie backdrop for their industrial sounds.

Asking Alexandria then took over. Singer Danny Worsnop was a bundle of energy and joy, and this band continues to evolve and improve as songwriters. They featured several tunes from their outstanding new album ‘Like a House on Fire’. Of course, they also dug into their stellar back catalog, with Ben Bruce, James Cassells, Cam Liddell and Sam Bentley locked in as usual. AA dropped a huge surprise on this Fantasy Festival, when Worsnop welcomed out former vocalist Denis Stoff and they sang “I Won’t Give In” together. After that, Chris Motionless, Andy Black, Levi Benton and Spencer Charnas all came on stage to finish the night with AA’s first single “The Final Episode (Let’s Change The Channel)”. Oh. My. GOD!!!

MOTIONLESS IN WHITE RELEASE ANOTHER LIFE/ETERNALLY YOURS: MOTION PICTURE COLLECTION EP

“ANOTHER LIFE: MOTION PICTURE COLLECTION” (FEAT. KERLI) OFFICIAL VIDEO STREAMING NOW

Today, Motionless In White have unveiled a new EP, entitled Another Life/Eternally Yours: Motion Picture Collection. Produced by Justin Deblieck and mixed by Steve Sopchack, the EP is available now on all streaming platforms.

The band commented on the new project, saying, “With all of the down time of not touring, we wanted to take the opportunity to try something we’ve never done before. We give you, ‘Eternally Yours: Motion Picture Collection’ (Feat Crystal Joilena) and ‘Another Life: Motion Picture Collection’ (Feat Kerli). Thank you to Crystal and Kerli for your amazing vocals that helped transform these versions into something truly special. Thank you to Justin Deblieck for your ever-brilliant talents that shine so bright throughout these tracks, and thank you to Steve Sopchack for your keen ear and dedication to mixing this project. We hope you all enjoy and are still staying safe out there.”

For the project, the acclaimed Scranton, PA band reimagined, and reinvigorated two fan favorite singles: “Another Life and “Eternally Yours.”

Additionally, they included brand new cinematic instrumental tracks for both. For this big screen-worthy interpretation of “Another Life,” they recruited dark pop Estonian artist Kerli to contribute an emotionally charged vocal. Over a bed of orchestral strings and sparse piano, frontman Chris Motionless locks into a haunting and hypnotic duet with her. The official music video offers a ghostly counterpoint and alternate view of the original, as well.

Meanwhile, Motionless In White enlisted Australian vocalist Crystal Joilena to join this nocturnal take of “Eternally Yours.” Classically-inspired piano cuts through swells of strings as the vocals reach heavenly heights on a solemn promise. Punctuated by lasers and galactic vignettes, the accompanying visual complements the song’s otherworldly energy.

A highlight of the group’s latest album DISGUISE [Roadrunner Records], the original “Another Life” ascended to the Top 15 at Active Rock Radio, becoming their highest-charting single to date. It has notably gathered 9.5 million views on the official music video, not to mention, Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo recently remixed “Another Life.

Motionless In White stormed into 2020 in support of their latest album DISGUISE. Available now at all DSPs and at www.motionlessinwhite.netDISGUISE made an explosive chart debut upon release, debuting at #4 on Billboard’s “Top Album Sales” chart while also claiming #2 on the “Hard Rock Albums” chart, and #27 on the SoundScan/Billboard 200 — Motionless In White’s third consecutive Top 30 entry on the overall chart. DISGUISE is highlighted by a series of singles, including “Brand New Numb,” “Undead Ahead 2: The Tale Of The Midnight Ride,” and “Disguise,” the latter joined by a haunting companion video directed by frequent collaborators Jeremy Danger and Travis Shinn. In addition, “Another Life” was joined by an official visual, directed by Max Moore.

Motionless In White and Beartooth have announced a co-headline tour set for January 2020. The “Diseased & Disguised Tour” kicks off January 4 in Seattle, Washington and runs through January 30 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Tickets are available at DiseasedAndDisguised.Soundrink.com.

“We’re going on tour with a Motionless In White. It’s quite literally the only reason to actually leave your house in the dead of winter. So bundle up and get ready to have your faces melted by the glowing warmth of a tasty riff,” says Beartooth bassist Oshie Bichar.

“Are you planning on a New Year’s resolution of hitting the gym harder? Losing some unwanted poundage? Well, come get that sweat on with us and Beartooth in January 2020 at The Diseased and Disguised Tour. Judgement-free zone ahead,” says Motionless In White vocalist Chris Motionless.

In Beartooth news, the band has released a deluxe version of their third full length album, Disease. The deluxe edition has been issued as a double LP limited to a pressing of 1,000 copies on clear vinyl with orange, black, and white splatter. It features the album’s 12 previously released songs, along with four B-sides and two live tracks from the band’s explosive, Summer 2019 set at Rock am Ring. With a new home at the world-renowned Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the 10th year of Welcome To Rockville features an unparalleled lineup of today’s top rock and metal artists and up-and-coming talent for Florida’s Biggest Rock Experience, happening on Friday, May 8, Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, 2020.
.
As previously announced, Metallica—recently named the world’s biggest all-time touring act by Pollstar—will exclusively headline all five Danny Wimmer Presents hard rock festivals in 2020, including Welcome To Rockville, in a unique collaboration unprecedented for any American festival promoter or band.
.
In addition to Metallica, who will perform two different sets (Friday, May 8 and Sunday, May 10), fan favorite Disturbed will headline Saturday, May 9. The diverse lineup also includes Lynyrd Skynyrd (their last show ever in their Northern Florida home area), Godsmack, Deftones, Social Distortion, The Offspring, Staind, Lamb of God, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, Mastodon, Gojira, Royal Blood, Alter Bridge, The Pretty Reckless, Anthrax, Ghostemane, Hellyeah, Hollywood Undead, Bad Wolves and many more.

“As a lifelong fan, it was an overwhelming experience to attend Lynyrd Skynyrd’s final hometown show at a sold-out stadium (TIAA Bank Field) in Jacksonville in September of 2018. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a band that has known tragedy and responded with nothing but triumph for over 50 years. They defined Southern rock, and they were a definitive part of my own rock n’ roll education growing up in Jacksonville,” says Danny Wimmer, founder of Danny Wimmer Presents. “After nine great years in Jacksonville, it was a difficult decision to move Welcome To Rockville to a new home – but it was a necessary decision for the festival to continue to grow and deliver the kind of experience that Florida’s rock fans deserve. I’m so humbled and honored that Lynyrd Skynyrd is coming with us to Daytona Beach to celebrate 10 years of Welcome To Rockville with their last-ever North Florida area show.”
.
The three-day destination festival will feature three music stages, premium food and beverage selections and enhanced onsite experiences.

In April, INKCARCERATION Music and Tattoo Festival was awarded Mansfield, Ohio’s prestigious Tourism Award of Excellence, and has been recognized by the United States House of Representatives, Ohio Senate, State of Ohio Representatives and Congressional Proclamation.

“The job the crew at INKCARCERATION did coming out of the gate demanded to be recognized,”  says Destination Mansfield President Lee Tasseff. “Our organization has worked with national events over the years, but nothing compared to the level of professionalism demonstrated in producing a head-turning concert event of the highest order on the iconic grounds of the Ohio State Reformatory…it was and is a perfect match. The community can’t wait to witness this year’s festival!”

Susan Fisher, Co-Producer, INKCARCERATION Music and Tattoo Festival, says, “We’re so honored to receive the Tourism Award of Excellence and be recognized by our Ohio State Representatives. We are grateful to our partners at Destination Mansfield who, along with Mansfield City officials, our local hotel partners and hundreds of Richland County volunteers, are gearing up to help us welcome our festival guests to a bigger and better INKCARCERATION 2019, from all around the world — as far as New Zealand.”

In its first year, INKCARCERATION brought enormous entertainment to over 18,000 fans, and this year, the festival aims even higher.
