Zebra at the World Famous Whisky A Go-Go

Zebra celebrated the 35th anniversary of their debut album with a rare West Coast tour, highlighted by an epic Saturday night at the legendary Whisky A Go-Go on Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California on December 1, 2018. On this tour, fans were treated to every classic song from the first Zebra album, including “Who’s Behind The Door?” and “Tell Me What You Want”.

Vocalist / guitarist Randy Jackson still has the same incredible voice, hitting every note possible with seeming ease, no small feat after 4 decades of performing. His guitar playing is outstanding, whether electric or acoustic or double-neck. Guy Gelso pounded the skins behind the drum kit and added back up vocals. Guy remains a true powerhouse. Felix Hanemann is the glue that holds it all together. He sings, slaps the bass, and plays keyboards, all with an infectious smile on his face.

Zebra played far more than their first album, mixing in tracks from “No Telling Lies”, “3.V” and “IV”. After completing a full set spanning their career, fans were completely satisfied and entertained, but the band wasn’t close to being done. They followed up with a set of Led Zeppelin covers, and not just any old songs. They played “Stairway To Heaven”, “Over The Hills And Far Away”, “Immigrant Song”, “Heartbreaker”, “The Ocean” and “Kashmir”. It was a breathtaking display of musicianship.

Since the show was in Hollywood, it seems appropriate that there was a twist and a real Hollywood ending. At the stop in “Heartbreaker”, the band dropped into a blues riff and out walked another singer, who turned out to be Donny Most, best known as Ralph Malph from Happy Days. All in all, it was a night of a lifetime, with one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time displaying every bit of songwriting and performing talent that they possess. We can only hope we don’t have to wait for another major anniversary to see Zebra out west again.
