Louisville, KY – It’s about to get LOUD in Louisville as the long-running, fan favorite festival Louder Than Life returns for its 10th year in 2024! Producers Danny Wimmer Presents – one of the largest independent promoters in the U.S. – pulled out all the stops to celebrate a decade of Louder Than Life, North America’s Largest Rock Festival, including the mighty return of thrash gods Slayer to the stage. In addition to their headlining performance, Loudmouths can also look forward to metal heavyweights Mötley Crüe, Slipknot and Korn closing out additional nights of the four-day event, which returns to its home at the Highland Festival Grounds at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY September 26, 27, 28 & 29, 2024.

After getting its start with 2 events in Concord, Virginia, followed up by the Covid-delayed logistical nightmare of last year’s massive 4 day event in Danville, Virginia, the Blue Ridge Rock Festival is finally getting a new home which promises to deliver on its promise as America’s premier fan-driven rock and roll experience.

This year’s event will take place over the extended weekend of September 8 – September 11, 2022. The venue hosting this event is the world-class road racing track Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia. Fans who endured the troubles of the past in order to witness the greatest collection of live rock and roll, and are ready to come back for more, will be rewarded with a location that is set up for large crowds, camping and entertainment.

Despite all of the issues last fall, the musical performances and production were top notch. The festival took on a partner, changed to a better venue and continues to ask fans to help choose the artists who will perform at the 2022 edition.

2020 has been an atypical year for the music industry. The usual album and tour cycles have been turned on their heads. Some bands chose to hold their albums for when touring starts up again. Some bands found creative ways to release their albums, many with livestreams to go with it. Other bands took the opportunity to record and release unexpected music, and much more of that will be coming in 2021.

Plenty of our familiar favorites dropped albums this year. For long-time fans, it was a welcome respite from the world, a warm blanket of sonic soothing. We got new music from AC-DC, Bon Jovi, Deftones, Green Day, Hollywood Undead, Ice-T and Body Count, In This Moment, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Puscifer, Sevendust, Smashing Pumpkins, and Testament. Here are our Five Fave: 2020 Rock Albums From Familiar Favorites.

#5 – Body Count featuring Ice-T – Carnivore

Ice-T is a genius in all types of entertainment. Body Count is his rap-rock outlet. Ernie C is his guitarist and he continues to crank out original rock, as well as re-imagining old rap songs and cover songs.

#4 – Pearl Jam – Gigaton

Pearl Jam covers a lot of musical ground on “Gigaton”. You may not like it all, but you are bound to love some of it. This is the kind of album that grows on you over time, so give it a few listens, and it may surprise you.

#3 – Sevendust – Blood & Stone

The boys in Sevendust just continue to evolve and improve as songwriters. This album grooves and drives and takes you on a journey.

#2 – Ozzy Osbourne – Ordinary Man

Despite health issues that have postponed several attempts at touring, somehow The Ozzman made it into the studio and created one of his best albums. Guitarist and producer Andrew Watt had worked with Ozzy on a Post Malone song, and he recruited Chad Smith and Duff McKagan, with assists from Malone and Sir Elton John. The album is diverse and brilliant, perhaps the coda to a 50 year career that began with Black Sabbath.

#1 – Bon Jovi – 2020

Bon Jovi had finished this album, and booked a world tour to support its release, when the world stopped turning. Jon Bon Jovi, inspired by the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, held the release, and wrote 2 more songs. “Do What You Can” and “American Reckoning” speak directly to society’s problems and promise. Overall, this album is full of heartfelt story telling, echoing Bruce Springsteen, and represents Bon Jovi looking outward, trying to make sense of it all.

The world seems to be shifting perspective, and reconsidering assumptions. There are many rock bands who you have sang along to, banged your head to, moshed to, and crowd-surfed to. Several of them have been attempting to educate and enlighten you in the process. Were you listening, really listening? Do you pay attention to the lyrics? Do you research the incidents, experiences and circumstances that led to their artistic expression? Now is the time to revisit some recent albums, but with a new perspective. In the spirit of education and empathy, here are our Five Fave Rock Albums That Matter Right Now.

5. Body Count feat. Ice-T – Bloodlust – 2017 (and Carnivore – 2020)

Ice-T has spent his career in rap and rock speaking loudly about social issues, particularly police violence against the black community. On his most recent albums, he broadens that focus, realizing that those in power work diligently to categorize, divide and antagonize the majority of the people they pretend to rule. These songs speak directly to the frustration, desperation and anger that so many have faced for so long. He combines rock vocals with spoken word and actual media clips to drive his points home.

4. Nonpoint – X – 2018

Nonpoint is another band who have touched on social issues throughout their career. Vocalist Elias Soriano is more poet than lyricist, and he makes his points in a more subtle and general way than Ice-T does. As in all great art, the consumer can draw their own impressions from the work, and sometimes songs take on new meanings as your personal experiences and world view broaden. Nonpoint recently recorded and released a new single during the quarantine, honoring all those who risk their own life to save strangers, “Remember Me (A Frontlines Tribute)”.

3. P.O.D. – Circles – 2018

P.O.D. is a band from Chula Vista in San Diego which has been talking about the American experience for 2 decades. They have always maintained their religious faith and incorporate that into their lyrics. While speaking truth about the darkest days and experiences of life, they offer hope and optimism amidst the heartache.

So who are you to say what life is like, that life is good?

2. Fire From The Gods – American Sun – 2019 (and Narrative – 2016)

Fire From The Gods combines rock with reggae, a music form that is synonymous with social injustice and pleads for healing. Vocalist Akil “AJ” Channer is a brilliant lyricist and vocalist who speaks truth to power, while searching for answers and common ground. The acknowledgement of mistakes and existence of issues are important first steps towards working for peaceful and equitable solutions.

How can we exist in a constant state of crisis
Society in conflict
All the ignorance betrays a weakness

1. Fever 333 – Strength In Numb333rs – 2019

Fever 333 is a project started in 2017 by vocalist Jason Aalon Butler, guitarist Stephen Harrison and drummer Aric Improta, with writing and production from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. The band intentionally formed to provide a soundtrack to the protests that have been building over time, and are now dominating the world. Their 2018 EP “Made an America” and 2019 full length debut “Strength In Numbers” focus on the raw emotions from a life growing up in Inglewood, California, watching family and friends struggle against the systemic oppression and racism that have once again boiled over nationally. Their musical style is based in punk rock and hip-hop. The lyrics are cutting and emotional, and should make people feel uncomfortable. The band recently released a single “Supremacy”, which they debuted during a live demonstration dubbed “Long Live The Innocent”, which can be seen below. All proceeds benefit Black Lives Matter & Minnesota Freedom Fund.
