It was a magical evening filled with stellar renditions of classic emotional songs.

3 Doors Down remain one of the best live rock and roll bands in the world. They have been delivering their heartfelt, passionate songs for a long time and they show no signs of slowing down.

They are a perfect complement to Creed. In fact, singer Brad Arnold told the crowd that Creed was the first band to take 3 Doors Down on a national tour. He laughed about driving a tractor, and 3 months later being out on the road and making lifelong friends.

3 Doors Down played for a full hour and was able to fit in so many of their classic hits.

It was a magical evening filled with stellar renditions of classic emotional songs.

Creed designed their set list to celebrate their three classic albums – My Own Prison, Human Clay and Weathered. Fans were in full voice throughout the night, as so many of these songs are deeply personal and burned into their brains. Vocalist Scott Stapp gave several long introductions to songs, pointing out their meaning to him, and encouraging people to unite, trust in God, and never give up fighting. His most inspirational talk revolved around not letting yourself or anyone else define you by your worst days. People are imperfect and make mistakes, sometimes repeatedly, but you can rise above those mistakes and continue to live the life that you want to live.

Lead guitarist Mark Tremonti was outstanding, showcasing his unique ability to play intricate beautiful melodies as well as shredding riffs and head banging guitar solos. Bassist Brian Marshall roamed the entire stage with a huge smile on his face all night. Drummer Scott Phillips was perched up high in the back, surrounded by massive video walls and plumes of fire. Tremonti, Marshall and Phillips are as tight as a live rock band can be, with their time outside of Creed spent playing in Alter Bridge. Guitarist Eric Friedman has joined the band on tour to enhance the live sound. Friedman also plays guitar in Tremonti.

Mark Tremonti gave away one of his PRS guitars midway through the set. He asked all of the fans to be as wild as possible during their performance of “What If”. He chose a young boy with crutches rocking in the pit with his father as the winner of the giveaway. It was a nice gesture, proving once again what a huge heart Mr. Tremonti possesses. Check out his work covering Frank Sinatra classics, raising money for NDSS – the National Down Syndrome Society.

SECOND LEG OF “IMMERSION: THE FINAL CHAPTER” TOUR KICKS OFF ON AUGUST 31 IN COLUMBUS AND RUN THROUGH SEPTEMBER 25 IN INDIANAPOLIS

Visionary, sci-fi-inspired rock collective STARSET have shared the video for their latest transmission “TOKSIK.”

Watch it here. And there’s puppets.

The song addresses the toxicity that has become omnipresent in the online space, where so many people spend far too much time these days. The track considers the effects of the virtual world ‘s toxicity — especially when it spills over into the real world.

STARSET previously announced the second leg of their “IMMERSION: THE FINAL CHAPTER” tour, set for late summer and early fall 2024. The tour is an “Evening With Starset” and kicks off August 31 in the band’s native Columbus, Ohio and runs through September 25 in Indianapolis. It also includes an appearance at the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville. This trek follows the Spring 2024 leg. The tour was almost 100% sold out across 20 dates. Tickets and VIP are available here.

Known for their groundbreaking and immersive live shows the tour is framed by a dystopian futuristic narrative. These, shows, known as “DEMONSTRATIONS,” promise a most-anticipated conclusion to narrative threads that have been woven into their multimedia experiences, through music, videos and live performances.

Earlier this spring, STARSET also shared the official music video for the brand new single “BRAVE NEW WORLD.” Watch it here. They followed with “DEGENERATE.” Watch it here.

The high demand that defined the Spring 2024 leg, coupled with the ability to experience these brand new songs and forthcoming, additional new material, is certainly reason enough for rock fans across the country to be excited for these upcoming demonstrations.

Lauded by Forbes as having “one of the most firmly established brands of any modern rock band,” Columbus, Ohio’s STARSET are creating a true multimedia empire with music at its core. Their hits include RIAA Platinum-selling hit “My Demons” (2012) and RIAA Gold-selling single “It Has Begun” (2014), with others soon to follow. With a staggering 5 billion streams and a rapidly growing rabid global fanbase, 2024 sees STARSET poised to rise as one of rock’s next superstar acts.

2025 Dates To Be Announced Soon

Welcome To Rockville is officially the biggest rock festival in North America, hosting more than 200,000 people and 150 bands on 5 stages for the first time. This year, Rockville also broke records to become the largest event for festival producer Danny Wimmer Presents. Looking ahead, the May 2025 festival dates at Daytona International Speedway will be announced soon.

The 13th Welcome To Rockville featured its most powerful collection of artists yet, including headliners Mötley Crüe & Disturbed (Thursday), Limp Bizkit & Jelly Roll (Friday), Foo Fighters & Queens of the Stone Age (Saturday) and Slipknot & Evanescence (Sunday), along with Judas Priest, Greta Van Fleet, Falling In Reverse, A Day To Remember, Breaking Benjamin, Bad Omens, The Offspring, Mudvayne, Koe Wetzel, Stone Temple Pilots, Primus, Cypress Hill, Sum 41, a rare appearance by Mr. Bungle, and many others. Welcome To Rockville brought in fans from around the U.S. and the world for the four-day destination event.

These were some of the highlights and can’t-miss moments during the festival:

Mötley Crüe had the crowd in a frenzy with a set filled with decades of hits, along with newer tracks like the recently released, “Dogs of War.” (Thursday)

Disturbed’s powerful show included a surprise cameo by legendary Heart vocalist Ann Wilson for a duet with David Draiman on “Don’t Tell Me,” the song they recorded together for the band’s current album. This marked the first time Wilson joined Disturbed onstage to perform the song. (Thursday)

After his headlining set on the SiriusXM Octane Drift Stage, Jelly Roll joined Limp Bizkit for the band’s version of The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes.” As Rolling Stone reported: “…Fred Durst told the crowd repeatedly, ‘I need an angel to come out here and save me. Drop something from the sky. I don’t care what it is, drop anything, please sweet angel. Save your brother Freddy D!’ As summoned, Jelly Roll then appeared onstage with Limp Bizkit to deliver the song’s second verse…” Later in the set, rapper Riff Raff joined Limp Bizkit on stage to perform his track “Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz.” The band also brought a couple from the crowd on stage for a live gender reveal. (Friday)

Falling In Reverse was joined by Tech N9ne and Alex Terrible from Slaughter To Prevail–who both played at the festival earlier that day–for the first-ever live performance of “Ronald (Feat. Tech N9ne And Alex Terrible),” which will appear on Falling In Reverse‘s new album. (Friday)

Rockville fans saw the second show ever for Kerry King‘s solo band, with a set that included songs from King’s forthcoming album as well as Slayer classics. (Friday)

Foo Fighters played a 2-hour set packed with hits, including an appearance from Mammoth WVH frontman Wolfgang Van Halen who surprised fans with a few classic Van Halen solos during Foo Fighters’ mid-show medley. (Saturday)

Queens of the Stone Age closed out the SiriusXM Octane Drift Stage Saturday night with an epic set of fan favorites. (Saturday)

Slipknot’s mind-blowing festival-closing set celebrated the 25th anniversary of the band’s classic self-titled album and was one of the first shows with the band’s new drummer Eloy Casagrande. (Sunday)

Evanescence’s Sunday night SiriusXM Octane Drift Stage headlining performance marked the band’s first show in the continental U.S. this year. (Sunday)

Sum 41 had the crowd singing along throughout their energetic set–one of the final shows ever for the group. Shortly before the band hit the stage, fans had the unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of a SpaceX rocket launch from nearby Cape Canaveral lighting up the sky behind the Vortex Stage. (Sunday)

The Church of Rock & Roll had surprise karaoke appearances from Rockville artists each day, including John Moyer (Disturbed), Joey Belladonna (Anthrax), John Cooper (Skillet), Ash Costello (New Years Day), Devin Oliver (I See Stars), Tim Montana and more.

Brand new onsite experiences at Rockville included the BLACKENED Burger Bar with Chef Chris Santos on the festival grounds and Just Add Milk Cereal Bar in the Rockville campground.

During the festival, the live broadcast on Rockville Radio on SiriusXM’s Chanel 504 included music from bands on this year’s lineup, interviews, streamed sets and more. Fans can re-live the best of Welcome To Rockville on Rockville Radio via the SiriusXM app, available to stream through May 22, 2024.

Metal Injection summarized the Welcome To Rockville experience well, noting, “Though some rock critics may argue on about how rock is either dead or dying, the only certainty is that such persons have never experienced the Florida festival that has been swelling to one of the biggest in the world: Welcome To Rockville.”

Welcome To Rockville is produced by Danny Wimmer Presents, one of the largest independent producers of destination music festivals in America.

Welcome To Rockville kicks off the Danny Wimmer Presents festival season this week with its biggest year in the festivals 10+ year history, featuring a new 5th stage and 50 more bands added this year. Festival producers are expecting a record setting 200,000 attendees from all around the world during the four day destination event. As the event approaches, DWP has announced more details about the brand new Rockville onsite experiences including the BLACKENED Whiskey Burger Bar with Chef Chris Santos, The Church of Rock & Roll, Just Add Milk Cereal Bar and more.

The 13th Welcome To Rockville features its most powerful collection of artists yet, including headliners Mötley Crüe & Disturbed (Thursday), Limp Bizkit & Jelly Roll (Friday), Foo Fighters & Queens of the Stone Age (Saturday) and Slipknot & Evanescence (Sunday), along with Judas Priest, Greta Van Fleet, Falling In Reverse, A Day To Remember, Breaking Benjamin, Bad Omens, The Offspring, Mudvayne, Koe Wetzel, Stone Temple Pilots, Primus, Cypress Hill, Sum 41, a rare appearance by Mr. Bungle, and many others. A limited number of Welcome To Rockville passes, camping options and hotel bundles are still available at www.WelcomeToRockville.com.

BLACKENED Burger Bar: DWP has announced the debut of the Metal Burger Box at the BLACKENED Burger Bar, exclusively at Welcome To Rockville. Crafted in collaboration with BLACKENED Whiskey, renowned celebrity Chef Chris Santos, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Metallica, and Welcome To Rockville, the BLACKENED Burger Bar promises to be an extraordinary fusion of exceptional spirits, culinary innovation, and the raw energy of rock music. Featuring signature burgers that embody the spirit of rock and roll, the BLACKENED Burger Bar invites fans to embark on a culinary journey unlike any other. Each Metal Burger Box is accompanied by exclusive surprises and presented in custom packaging designed to be cherished long after the last bite. Rockville attendees are invited to visit the BLACKENED Burger Bar to be a part of this groundbreaking culinary experience.

“Three things I love about summer are: cooking for my favorite metal bands at Danny Wimmer festivals every year, enjoying BLACKENED Whiskey cocktails while I’m there, and listening to Metallica while I’m doing it!” says celebrity Chef Chris Santos. “So the idea of combining the three in a fun, creative and collaborative way with both the festivals and the band seemed like a no brainer to me. And then things moved QUICK! And here we are with the first ever Metallica X Chris Santos BLACKENED Burger Bar debuting at Welcome To Rockville!”

Just Add Milk Cereal Bar: Starting Thursday morning, Welcome To Rockville campers will be able to mix and match the cereals they grew up on with fresh, ice-cold Florida milk or indulge in a fresh scoop of ice cream while vintage TVs blast out Saturday morning cartoons, making it a pit stop for nostalgia and flavor-packed fun. The activation is located within the festival campgrounds by the General Store and Pit Stop #1. Milk and ice cream will be provided by Florida Dairy Farmers. All proceeds will go to Second Harvest Food Bank, who is also a beneficiary of the post-festival food donations via Musically Fed.

“Florida Dairy Farmers is proud to partner with Welcome To Rockville to fuel campers with local, delicious, and nutritious milk and ice cream at the Just Add Milk Cereal Bar. All proceeds will go to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida to help feed kids, families, and seniors who are experiencing hunger in our community. We were able to make this experience possible through generous donations from General Mills, TG Lee and The Ice Cream Club,” said Diahann Smith, Senior Marketing Director at Florida Dairy Farmers. (Please note that Just Add Milk Cereal Bar is open to campers only.)

The Church of Rock & Roll: The brand new The Church of Rock & Roll will serve as a sanctuary of metal madness featuring endless karaoke, sinister spirits and unforeseen thrills that will bring out festival goers’ inner rockstars. The ultimate dive bar experience features all-day karaoke with the opportunity for fans to connect, unwind, and immerse themselves in the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll.

Returning immersive experiences on the Welcome To Rockville festival grounds include:

● The BLACKENED Whiskey Bar (featuring the super premium blend of straight bourbons and ryes created by the late, legendary Master Distiller Dave Pickerell and the almighty Metallica).

● Rock N’ Ride immersive carnival rides – WhipSplash Water Slide, Roundabout Ferris Wheel (with spectacular views of the festival grounds), The Round Up and The Swinger

TORTUGA MUSIC FESTIVAL CELEBRATES COUNTRY MUSIC AND MORE
IN SUNNY FORT LAUDERDALE

11TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL HOSTS PERFORMANCES FROM LAINEY WILSON, HARDY, JASON ALDEAN, BRET MICHAELS, MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD, TEDDY SWIMS AND ASHLEY MCBRYDE, AMONGST OTHERS

To Date, Rock The Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival Has Raised
Nearly 5 Million For Ocean Conservation Efforts

Rock The Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival, in partnership with Live Nation, hosted fans for a weekend of unmatched entertainment featuring headliners Lainey Wilson, HARDY and Jason Aldean. Praised for having an “eclectic” lineup that is “deep in talent” (Sun Sentinel), the 11th annual festival brought over 40 artists ranging from country’s hottest new stars like Bailey Zimmerman and CMA Award winning Group of the Year Old Dominion to icons like Bret Michaels, Boyz II Men and TLC.

On Friday, the Sunset Stage kicked off Tortuga right with performances from Shwayze, Boys II Men, Teddy Swims and Ashley McBryde. On the Main Stage, Warren Zeiders invited Teddy Swims to perform a special rendition of “Tennessee Whiskey.” Shortly after, Turnpike Troubadours’ driving country-rock welcomed in the first scenic sunset of the festival. A crowd favorite, Lainey Wilson closed opening night with her signature “Bell Bottom Country” sound, belting her GRAMMY-winning hits as fans danced along under the warm night sky.

The uplifting energy continued on Saturday with nearly 20 performances set against a sunny backdrop and a sea of fans. Appropriately, Michael Franti & Spearhead filled the main stage with their vibrant ‘sounds of sunshine,’ setting the tone for Old Dominion, whose performance elicited enthusiastic sing-alongs from the crowd. Meanwhile, multi-platinum entertainer Russell Dickerson brought his “unstoppable energy” (E! News) to the Sunset Stage and was followed by rock icon Bret Michaels. Singing Poison classics like “Your Mama Don’t Dance” and “Nothing But a Good Time,” Michaels surprised fans by inviting Cooper Alan up for a “Sweet Home Alabama” duet. HARDY closed the night and pushed genre boundaries with his one-of-a-kind blend of nu-metal and country on the Main Stage.

Rounding out the sunny, star-studded weekend, fans at the Sunset Stage were able to experience the carefree songs of the Wheeland Brothers, much-anticipated 90s legends TLC and country-folk singer Charles Wesley Godwin. The Main Stage opened with DIAMOND-selling superstar Brian Kelley, followed by Bailey Zimmerman delivering an energetic set proving why he’s “Country’s Biggest New Star” (Grammy.com). ACM Artist of the Decade Jason Aldean followed, closing out the 2024 festival with hits like “My Kinda Party” and “Lights Come On” featuring Bailey Zimmerman.

The weekend also showcased the next generation of country music featured on the festival’s first year of the Next From Nashville stage, giving attendees a chance to discover the genre’s hottest acts including Sadie Bass, Annie Bosko, The Castellows, Kolby Cooper, Logan Crosby, Hannah Ellis, Dylan Gossett, HunterGirl, Greylan James, Meg McRee, Peytan Porter, Josh Ross, Austin Snell, Anne Wilson and Stephen Wilson Jr.

Since its inception in 2013, Tortuga has raised nearly $5 million supporting 100+ nonprofits dedicated to saving our oceans and marine life as well as groundbreaking research in the United States, Bahamas, South Africa and Asia. Last year, the festival received the prestigious 2023 Bronze Stevie Award for Sustainability Leadership in the US and Canada at the 20th Annual International Business Awards. Sustainability at the 2024 Tortuga Music Festival focused on three major goals involving all departments – “Reduce, Rethink and Restore” – to reduce CO2 emissions and waste going to landfills, to explore green products and technologies, and to implement policies to protect Marine ecosystems and support ocean conservation efforts. Rock The Ocean’s on-site Conservation Village gives festival guests the opportunity to learn more about where a portion of the proceeds from their passes go and how they can help make a difference. Niko Moon has been riding high behind his debut album “Good Time”, after years of success as a songwriter for others. His most successful songs were performed by the Zac Brown Band, and they recently collaborated on the single “Heaven Has A Bar”.

Niko is constantly roaming the stage, yellow solo cup in hand, interacting with every adoring fan. The House of Blues was extremely sold out on this night, with fans packed in upstairs, downstairs and all around the sides. They were singing and dancing along, soaking in every fun-filled minute of the performance.

Despite the overall happy vibe, which is his brand, the most touching moment of the night was when Niko performed a song solo on acoustic guitar. He first explained that he writes all of his songs with his wife, Anna Moon. Then he went on to perform “I Can’t Wait To Love You”, which they wrote and performed together in anticipation of their first child’s arrival. See video below for a taste of how emotional the song is.

Nita Strauss has been performing with Alice Cooper for the past decade, while maintaining a solo career as well. Her 2018 album “Controlled Chaos” contained all full band instrumentals. Her latest effort features several guest vocalists, including Alissa White-Gluz, Lzzy Hale, Dorothy, Lilith Czar, Chris Motionless, David Draiman, Anders Friden and Alice Cooper.

The show opened with 5 blistering instrumental numbers, culminating in a drum solo by Nita’s drummer and fiance Josh Villalta. Bassist Christopher Dean, guitarist Johnny Young and keyboardist Katt Scarlett combined to provide a driving wave of metal sounds, which Strauss surfed with precision and joy. Her signature Ibanez guitar sang, cried and screamed at every movement of her magical fingers.

The second half of the set featured songs from “The Call of the Wild”. Deadlands vocalist Kasey Karlsen stepped in to deliver the vocals recorded by some of the icons listed above. She did an incredible job on all of the songs, elevating the overall show.

Nita took advantage of the venue being located at Disney Springs, and took the stage wearing Minnie Mouse ears. That is a very common sight in Orlando, but not as often seen on a rock and roll stage. Her choice and her sly smile immediately set the tone for an engaging performance.

This is the first time Mammoth WVH were playing as a headlining act, which allowed them all the time they needed to play almost all of the great songs found on their 2 albums. While Wolfgang performs all instruments and vocals on the recordings, his talented band has been playing live with him for 3 years, and they have developed into a very tight and entertaining group.

Mammoth WVH ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

The night was a sort of homecoming for drummer Garrett Whitlock, who had played alongside Wolfie in Orlando legend Mark Tremonti’s solo band. Bassist Ronnie Ficarro and guitarists Frank Sidoris and Jon Jourdan are dynamic stage performers, and all 3 are excellent vocalists. A Mammoth WVH show is a pleasure to witness, whether you are familiar with the songs or not.

This night was extra special, as a live music video was filmed during the performance of the next single “Right?”. If you were present, you just might catch yourself rocking along when the video is released.

Keith Urban, Carly Pearce, Bailey Zimmerman, Parmalee, Tracy Byrd and Chase Matthew provided a Sunday full of magical musical moments.

Keith Urban proved his enduring star power. Urban has the songs, the looks and the guitar wizardry. He is a true entertainer. Carly Pearce proved that she too will be around for a long time. Pearce weaved several excellent brand new songs into her set list, which was already filled with blockbusters, including “Hide The Wine”, “Every Little Thing”, “What He Didn’t Do” and “I Hope You’re Happy Now”. She left everyone happy, thrilled to be a part of such a special performance.

Bailey Zimmerman ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

Bailey Zimmerman showed why he is one of the most exciting new artists in country music. His energy, passion and faith were all on full display. He challenged everyone to follow their heart and dreams, noting that only a few years ago he was building a gas pipeline, and now he is playing main stages and being nominated for awards. Zimmerman crushed his set, which included 3 #1 singles – “Fall In Love”, “Rock and a Hard Place” and “Religiously”. Chase Matthew also showed that the future of country music is in good hands. He played a great set, highlighted by “Come Get Your Memory” and “County Line”.

Tracy Byrd ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

Tracy Byrd brought some classic country to the mix, adding his chill vibe to an easy Sunday afternoon. Parmalee also provided a smooth sound, which went down easy under the hot sun.

Country Thunder Florida 2023 continued at Osceola Heritage Park in the Orlando suburb of Kissimmee, Florida on October 21, 2023. Day 2 of this outstanding festival featured HARDY, Kip Moore, Lonestar, Cooper Alan, Hailey Whitters, The Reklaws and The Washboard Union. HARDY drew the largest, loudest and youngest crowd of the weekend, proving that the future of country music is bright. He put on an incredible performance, using lighting, videos and most importantly, and endless supply of great songs.

The Reklaws ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

The Washboard Union started early, playing in the hot Florida sun. Midway through song 2, the stage power dropped, but these consummate professionals simply went acoustic, strolling out on the long catwalk and playing directly to the fans. Eventually the power was restored and they completed their set. The same thing happened to Tik Tok sensation Cooper Alan. He also quickly asked for an acoustic guitar and began asking the crowd for cover song suggestions. He was a natural at that, particularly on Nickelback’s “Rock Star.”

Lonestar ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

The legendary Lonestar showcased sweet harmonies and heartfelt love songs. The Reklaws are a sibling duo from Ontario, Canada. Jenna and Stuart Walker are a bit like the stars of Letterkenny, with entertaining songs about drinking beer and having fun.

Hailey Whitters ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

Hailey Whitters showed why she is one of the brightest rising stars in country music. She performs in an old school style, with great songs such as “I’m In Love”, “Everything She Ain’t” and “All The Cool Girls”. Kip Moore has a bit of a rock edge, sounding somewhat like Bon Jovi, and his lighting and sound were dark and moody.

Cody Johnson was spectacular, delivering great songs and messages of resilience and hope. Johnson is a true headliner who entertained throughout the night, culminating in a stirring rendition of consensus song of the year, “‘Til You Can’t”. Rising star Parker McCollum was an electric support act, cranking out several hits, including the clever “Handle On You”.

Parker McCollum ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

Jo Dee Messina continued her resurgence, helped along by the massive success of Cole Swindell’s “She Had Me At Heads Carolina”. Fans were treated to 2 versions of the original classic “Heads Carolina, Tails California”. After getting through most of her set, Messina suddenly lost her singing voice. She apologized to the crowd, and had her band play the song again, with her backup singer taking lead, as she signed every hat, boot and sign that she could. It was a pro move by a class act, which was well received.

Shane Profitt ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

Shane Profitt and his band put on a great show, featuring catchy tunes like “How It Oughta Be” and “Better Off Fishin'”. Josh Ross had plenty of hits of his own, including “Ain’t The One”, “Trouble” and “Red Flags”. Orlando’s own Charly Reynolds got things going with a non-stop set of songs you oughta know, highlighted by “Rodeo”, “Flowers”, “Sand Bar” and her cover of “Neon Moon”.

This is a re-post from our family travel blog, written in 2005.

Lost my tunes

When we lost the external hard drive, we lost all the mp3’s we had ripped over the past year – most of the CD’s are still at home, so it is rebuildable when we get back, and we have about 20 CD’s we burned in the van, so we are not at a total loss of music.

I am however, at a loss when it comes to listening to something when I am working on the computer. So, I joined the new Napster for a 2 week free trial. I can listen to everything they have, and download most of that, but if you try to burn a CD, it makes you pay for it, and you have to still be subscribing to do that, since other players only check their own sites to see if you have paid. I will probably just leave the files on here and just listen to them on the laptop.

So, when you lose all your tunes, and don’t have a 300-gig hard drive to store them on anymore, you can’t just download every single album you love. You have to have a plan. I settled on getting some newer ones I never had, to check them out. They are:
Springsteen – Devils & Dust – I never like his acoustic stuff as much as full band, but so far it sounds pretty good.
Green Day – American Idiot – this is a great album and I never really liked them before
Pato Banton – Collections – this is some great reggae from someone you probably have never heard of – he is a family favorite
Audioslave – Audioslave – this just plain rules
Bon Jovi – 100,000,000 Bon Jovi fans can’t be wrong – bunch of extra songs they never put out and some demos – 4 disc set, have not listened yet
A Perfect Circle – Emotive/Mer De Noms – dig their sound, have not listened yet
The Darkness – Permission to Land – curious to see how good it is
System of a Down – Toxicity – dig the singles, curious about the rest, new tune is great by the way
Three Days Grace – some good singles, hope the rest is good
Bunch of country songs – mostly pretty new – add some variety to the mix

So, the other ones I decided to get are my favorite kind of music. 80’s rock, hair metal, call it whatcha want – it’s all music to me. I picked my favorite 21 albums and downloaded them. Nappy did not have Motley Crue – Shout at the Devil. Here they are, with 3 best songs:

* Bon Jovi – Slippery When Wet – Wanted: Dead or Alive, You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin’ on a Prayer
* Cinderella – Long Cold Winter – Coming Home, Gypsy Road, Don’t Know What You’ve Got (til its gone)
* Damn Yankees – Damn Yankees – Coming of Age, Come Again, High Enough
* Def Leppard – Pyromania – Foolin’, Photograph, Rock of Ages
* Dokken – Under Lock and Key – In My Dreams, Unchain the Night, The Hunter (hearing this live in July 2000 clinched Hunter’s name for us)
* Extreme – Pornograffiti – Get the Funk Out, More Than Words, Hole Hearted
* Europe – The Final Countdown – The Final Countdown, Carrie, Rock the Night (the boys new favorite song)
* Kix – Blow My Fuse – Cold Blood, Don’t Close Your Eyes, Red Light Green Light TNT
* Lynch Mob – Wicked Sensation – Wicked Sensation, River of Love, Through These Eyes
* Quiet Riot – Metal Health – Bang Your Head, Cum On Feel The Noize, Slick Black Cadillac
* Ratt – Reach For The Sky – Way Cool Jr., I Want a Woman, What’s It Gonna Be
* Scorpions – Love At First Sting – Rock You Like A Hurricane, Coming Home, Still Loving You
* Skid Row – Skid Row – 18 & Life, I Remember You, Youth Gone Wild ** Napster does not have these 3 songs, only the rest of the album, so that required a change to:
* Skid Row – Slave to the Grind – Monkey Business, Wasted Time, (You can’t be king of the world when you’re) Slave to the Grind
* Steelheart – Steelheart – I’ll Never Let You Go, Everybody Loves Eileen, Love Ain’t Easy
* Tesla – The Great Radio Controversy – Love Song, Hang Tough, The Way It Is
* Twisted Sister – Stay Hungry – I Wanna Rock, We’re Not Gonna Take It, The Price
* Van Halen – 5150 – Dreams, Love Walks In, Why Can’t This Be Love
* White Lion – Pride – Wait, When The Children Cry, Lady of the Valley
* Whitesnake – Whitesnake – Here I Go Again, Still of the Night, Is This Love
* Winger – Winger – Seventeen, Headed For A Heartbreak, Madalaine
* Zebra – Zebra – Who’s Behind the Door?, Tell Me What You Want, Take Your Fingers From My Hair

It is hard to believe that Shinedown has been a part of our lives for two full decades now. 20 years since we first showed up early at a Tantric concert in a small club, to see the band that maybe had that one song “Fly From The Inside” we heard a few times on the radio. There have been so many changes since then – changes in the world, the music industry, the band, the fans, everything really.

Even back in May of 2005, listening to “Leave A Whisper” from front to back felt like catching up with an old friend. I found this old blog post I had done in the middle of a 4 month cross-country adventure with my then-wife and our 2 young boys. The sentiments certainly stand up today, and with the appropriate passage of time, this Shinedown classic remains one of the greatest rock and roll records of all time, and one of my favorites. Are you still listening to it today?

Shinedown ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

An album is like an old friend

A great record album is like an old friend. You may not hear from them for a while, but once you hear from them again, it takes you right back to that place you were at.

On my drive up to Carlsbad today, I decided to listen to Heather and my favorite album from last year, from our favorite new band. We went to a Tantric concert about a year ago at Tremont Music Hall in Charlotte and the opening band was Shinedown. We ended up liking Shinedown better and proceeded to play their album all year long. We even saw them twice more at Tremont as headliners. The boys love the acoustic version of Burning Bright, and they even did an acoustic cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man, which was the song me and my Mom danced to at my wedding.

Now, it probably has not been all that long since I heard this album, but it seems like long, long ago that we lived in Charlotte. The memories were not so long ago, but hearing this album today [while going 4 MPH, which gives you plenty of time to listen closely and sing along] brought them back quickly.

I will include the link to their site https://www.shinedown.com/ and a few choice lyrics from each of their songs. We begin with the unofficial CRM Open, LLC theme song – ‘Fly From The Inside’ – this song kept me sane as my YOUcentric/JDEdwards/PeopleSoft days were coming to a close and gave me the encouragement to start my own consulting company. After my first non-billable month, it was a perfect time to be reminded to believe in yourself, stay focused, and keep moving forward toward your goals.

Fly From The Inside
– I am focused on what I am after – The key to the next open chapter
– Cause I found a way to steal the sun from the sky
– Long live that day that I decided to fly from the inside

Left Out
– Is there a place within for redemption?
– Is there a voice inside with a decision?
– And if so when, and if so then, where’s the conviction?

Lost In The Crowd
– Should I offer up my hand and lay the guilt on myself, so it’s easier to not stay

No More Love
– Now quietly I will walk away – there’s no bad blood but I can’t stay

Better Version
– I am not perfect, and I don’t claim to be
– And if that’s what you wanted, well then I’m so sorry

Burning Bright
– There’s always something new, some path I’m supposed to choose, with no particular rhyme or reason

In Memory
– some of the easiest habits are the hardest ones to break
– fixing your problems and starting over again

All I Ever Wanted
– If there’s a way to a remedy then lead me straight to it
– If there’s a path or a door I missed, then show me now, show me this
– Because all I ever wanted was a place to call my home
– To shelter me when I am there and to miss me when I’m gone

Stranger Inside
– I’m sick and tired of ‘you’ll be fine’
– Well how do you know? Do you read minds?

Crying Out
– Re-invent yourself today, re-invent your world today
– There’s no turning back now that you’ve opened up to your mind

45
– Everyone’s pointing their fingers, always condemning me
– Nobody knows what I believe

Check them out – maybe this album will have some special meaning for you too!

Shinedown continues to tour behind their outstanding 7th album ‘Planet Zero’. “The Revolutions Live Tour” 2023 currently has the up-and-coming Spiritbox and long-time friends Papa Roach on board, making for an incredible show from beginning to end.

Shinedown ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

On September 24, 2023, during a chilly, rainy Sunday evening, the tour set up shop inside the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The stage reached out almost to center ice, with a packed floor area all around 3 sides and fans filling seats from the boards all the way to the top of the arena.

Shinedown ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

After being sufficiently “warmed up” by Spiritbox and blown away by Papa Roach, the crowd was ready for more. A Shinedown show is not just a concert. It is an action movie, group therapy and spiritual revival all wrapped up together and delivered with emotions and explosions.

Shinedown ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

Brent Smith, Barry Kerch, Zach Myers and Eric Bass have carefully formulated an unstoppable movement. Their songs are powerful, even when they are quiet. Their lyrics are inspirational and aspirational. They have spent 2 decades making real connections with people, collecting new fans every step of the way. Their production value and stage craft borrow from all genres of entertainment, delivering everything you could want from a concert and more.

Shinedown ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

This tour features a “flying” piano, which drops from the rafters when needed, and disappears after being played brilliantly by Eric Bass. Every type of pyro is deployed to accentuate the heavy songs. Despite all of the flair, the most lasting moments happen with acoustic guitars, crowd sing-alongs, and encouraging words from Brent Smith. Everyone is included, and all are invited, and that is truly how it feels. Whether you have been around for 20 years, or came on board yesterday, the deep bonds of friendship are felt by all, and are strongly encouraged by this group of wonderful human beings.

Shinedown ©2023 Johnnie Crow Photos

The set list (pictured below) included so many incredible songs which produced magical moments. At this point, Shinedown has too many hit songs and deep cuts, and you could easily make a completely different playlist which would be just as special. What this means is that you should never pass up any opportunity you get to witness this band performing live.

Parkway Drive is celebrating 20 years of brilliance on a massive tour of North America titled “Monsters Of Oz”. The lineup consists entirely of Australian metal bands, with The Amity Affliction, Northlane and Make Them Suffer along for the thrilling ride.

The Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center in midtown Manhattan is just steps from other famed New York City landmarks such as Madison Square Garden, Penn Station and the Empire State Building. This is one of the more beautiful venues you will find for a concert, with a massive floor area surrounded by multiple levels of balcony seating. The loudest sound of the night was actually the band and crowd singing the a capella intro to “Wild Eyes” as the final encore of the evening.

On September 17, 2023, a passionate crowd of metal fans was fully prepared for a long Sunday evening of singing, screaming, bouncing, moshing and crowd surfing. Many fans had been waiting with great anticipation, after the opening night of the tour was cancelled, along with the rest of the disastrous Blue Ridge Rock Festival. Nobody was disappointed, as each act delivered and made a strong connection.

Winston McCall, Jeff Ling, Luke Kilpatrick, Ben Gordon and Jia O’Connor are a powerhouse force on record, and somehow even more powerful when performing live. The energy in the room was palpable, shared between fans and band, traded back and forth, and continually elevated into a symphony of emotion and catharsis.

It is so encouraging to see artists who still believe in the full spectacle of rock and roll. Despite being indoors, there was no shortage of pyrotechnics. This is the first time that Parkway Drive has had the opportunity to bring a full production headline performance to North America, and it had better not be the last. Lights, fire, strobes, smoke and a rotating drum kit (on fire!) were all part of the entertainment.

With a full headlining set at last, hardcore fans were able to experience the majesty of 14 killer songs from “Darker Still”, “Reverence”, “Ire”, “Deep Blue”, “Horizons” and “Atlas”.  The only problem is that PWD has so many incredible tunes, they could have played for another hour and still not covered them all.

The Blue Ridge Rock Festival tried to recover from a confusing and frustrating Day 1, hoping to do a better job of transporting fans from the day parking lot 5 miles away, on a couple dozen school buses, to the campgrounds near the Virginia International Raceway in rural Alton, Virginia on September 8, 2023.

It was a very hot and humid day, and any rain and mud that had come the day before had dried up. On this day, the only focus was to move between stages, stay hydrated, and rock out. Ben Wells, guitarist for Black Stone Cherry, had a tribute to Jimmy Buffett painted on his amps – a fitting nod to an entertainer who helped create the festival friends vibe, which continues to bring people together, across all genres of music.

The day was owned by Motionless In White, returning for their 3rd year in a row, playing a night-time slot on the Monster Energy Main Stage. They played to the largest crowd ever witnessed at Blue Ridge Rock Festival (possibly so large as to violate their permit) and everyone shined their lights and sang along to “Another Life”, prompting Chris Motionless to take the time to share the band’s appreciation for the fans demanding that they return and perform at night on the main stage. It was a truly special performance from a band that continues to elevate.

The Monster Energy Main Stage had it all going on that Friday. Sudden star Oliver Anthony from Virginia kicked it off with a short set. Demun Jones, Crown The Empire and Trustcompany braved the heat early in the day. Next up was reunion time, with Coal Chamber and Flyleaf with Lacey Sturm delighting their long time fans with superb performances. Slipknot finished off the long day with a brutal performance that had exhausted festival goers re-energized and in constant motion.

The Zyn Main Stage had a wide variety of acts on Day 2. It went from the country rock sounds of Struggle Jennings and Black Stone Cherry to the hardcore strains from Of Mice & Men, Knocked Loose, Danzig and fan favorite Sleep Token, whose unique sound and stage show had them stand apart from everyone else performing that day.

The Famous Monsters stage was a constant swirl of activity, with mosh pits and crowd surfing throughout the day. The lineup was straight up heavy and aggressive. Angelmaker, Upon A Burning Body, Chelsea Grin, The Acacia Strain, After The Burial, The Black Dahlia Murder, Job For A Cowboy and Lorna Shore tore up that stage. It was so hard core, I got a concussion and head bruise leaving the photo pit, after walking into the video screen. Oh well, our scars remind us that the past is real.

The Smartpunk Records stage also had a diverse lineup. Standouts included Afterlife, Electric Callboy, VV, Testament and Polyphia.

Disturbed was originally set to play Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek on August 7, 2023. On that day, fans waited around for several hours of weather delay, only to ultimately be told to go home, and that the concert would be rescheduled. Many of us got there using ride shares, were stuck out in the open when the storm hit with considerable fury, and we left soaked and disappointed. For me, it was a depressing end to a night that held such promise – the chance to see one of my favorite metal bands and to feel uplifted as I rocked out with a great friend and fellow metalhead.

On September 6, almost a month later, we returned on a sultry but dry night, and this time the fury came not from the storm but from the band that we had waited for so long to see and hear. Since the tour had ended the previous week, the scheduled support acts Jinjer and Breaking Benjamin were not available to perform. On this night though, we were not disappointed. After Wage War did the opening honors with a scorching set of hard-driving metal, including the fan-favorite “Circle the Drain,” you could feel the anticipation of thousands of die-hard Disturbed fans as the minutes ticked by, closer and closer to the projected 8:30 start time.

Disturbed hit the stage like a hurricane and opened with “Hey You” off their Divisive album, flames roaring in the background on three moving platforms. Just when you thought flames on stage were passe, we have something new with three moving walls of fire being choreographed with the scorching rock emanating out into the horde of metal-hungry fans. It was a warm night, made hotter by the radiating heat from these flames, but somehow it felt good and it felt right. I didn’t mind the sweat pouring down my back as I rocked out to some of my favorite metal songs of all time. In contrast to August 7, when we were cold, wet, and disappointed; tonight we were warm and rocking hard to one of the best metal bands in the world. And it was clear they were giving it everything they had.

Disturbed continued to rock their fans with songs like “Ten Thousand Fists,” “Stupify,” and “Indestructible.” One of the most poignant parts of the two-hour jam was when David Draiman stopped the music for a moment to talk about his personal life. He talked about interactions with his son (now about 10 years old), including his son’s introduction to Disturbed’s music (a funny moment). He then got serious and mentioned that many people are dealing with addiction and depression, and that he has been down that path too. He said that this past February was an especially dark time for him. The audience nodded, knowingly, as many of us have been down that dark path as well. It was as if, for a moment, there was a giant support group of 10,000+ people, all looking at each other and saying: “Hey I have been there, you got this, you can make it through.” And the truth is, as rockers, our music does help us make it through. This music. Disturbed music. Because, we are all Disturbed. And with that, they ripped into “The Light,” as every voice in the crowd sang along, from the heart, uplifting the whole support group. It was a rock concert moment I will never forget.

The Coastal Credit Union Walnut Creek amphitheater shined brightly this night, and the staff kept everything on-track and orderly. The food and drinks were easily accessible, and the weather was fine. As we rocked out to incredible tracks like “Down with the Sickness” and “Stricken,” you could feel the pent-up energy from both the band and the audience, as if we were all trying to erase the memory of August 7. I think we accomplished that. When you include Wage War’s set, it was three hours of great metal music. That is just what the doctor ordered. As Draiman said, many of us are dealing with all kinds of crap. We need music sessions like this to heal our heart and soul. We have to keep rocking! Great metal, and perhaps a few walls of flame, may be exactly what you need to “ignite the fire within you.”
